Book Synopsis The Fragmentation of the Proper Name and the Crisis of Degree by : Radhouan Ben Amara
Download or read book The Fragmentation of the Proper Name and the Crisis of Degree written by Radhouan Ben Amara and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2004 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a rich interpretation of a rich text, providing a twenty-first century reading of a timeless masterpiece, and, in so doing, it points to the relationship of death and desire as a playing both with body and language. The book confronts readers with the ineluctable patterns which language and time inscribe within the open/closed Shakespearean space: Degree, division, and diversity as the focal points. Emphasis upon the corporeality of the human body links this study's textual interpretation with the corpus of the literary canon, itself seen as a body divided by performance and differed by reading. It prevails over the damaging engagement with the deconstructed text and dominates the conflictual tendencies of the reconstructed drama.

Book excerpt: Child perspective is a symbolic narrative strategy that designs multilayered possibilities for meaning in ethnic writing. This book positions Asian American bildungsromane in the context of American writing about children, reading them through the lens of their narrators - the oftentimes dual child/adult perspective - to examine how narrative point of view nuances and shapes issues of personal, ethnic, and national positioning. This approach privileges the authors' narrative choices and engagement with genre, revealing how these critical writerly decisions construct texts that signify on multiple levels, and dialogue productively with other texts. Their interpretation and creative negotiation of the key elements of narrative perspective lead us to uncover aspects which are constitutive of the successful manipulation of narrative voice. The texts analyzed in this study demonstrate the flexibility of this narrative technique, and its usefulness as a critical tool though which important thematic issues - family, race, culture, war, assimilation, and language - may be deployed. Reading the way Asian American texts manipulate child perspective positions these texts within developing critical paradigms and allows the reader to examine the manner in which they influence the development of American literature and the theory that reads it.

Book Synopsis CrossRoutes, the Meanings of "race" for the 21st Century by : Paola Boi
Download or read book CrossRoutes, the Meanings of "race" for the 21st Century written by Paola Boi and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2003 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection reflects the still urgent project of historical recuperation, as well as an examination of literary representations and other cultural manifestations of the Black Diaspora. Disciplinary work within the boundaries of African American Studies has been enhanced by more general considerations of the history of "race" and racism in globalized contexts. The articles assembled here reflect recent empirical research as well as challenging theoretical considerations. Contributions address particular formations of racialized modernity owed to the impact of the Atlantic slave trade and slavery, and thus broaden the approach to the Middle Passage, to improve our understanding of it as a constitutive transatlantic phenomenon in the widest possible sense.

Book Synopsis To Speak for the People by : Jon Cowans
Download or read book To Speak for the People written by Jon Cowans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there is now a great deal of literature on the concept of public opinion in the 18th century France, it is almost entirely devoted to the pre-revolutionary years. No book has tackled the concept of public opinion in the French Revolution itself. To Speak for the People is a lucid and innovative study that finally fills this gap. Historian Jon Cowans adds a strong and genuinely original voice to the historical debate over the problem of legitimacy during the Revolution drawing on the works of such luminaries as Jürgen Habermas, Keith Baker, François Furet, and Nancy Fraser. He then examines the uses of terms such as public opinion, 'the public, and the people in political debates during the Revolution and analyzes those terms' changing meaning and the role they played in attempts to secure political authority. While shedding new light on the Revolution itself, the book raises broader issues by addressing the problem of legitimacy that has haunted all revolutionary and democratic governments throughout the modern period. Jon Cowans is a graduate of Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. He received his Ph.D. in History at Stanford University. He has published articles on French political culture, cultural politics, and memory in French Historical Studies , the Journal of Contemporary History , and History and Memory . He teaches in the History Department of Rutgers University and lives in Brooklyn, New York.
Book Synopsis Economic Crisis and Austerity in Southern Europe by : Maria Petmesidou
Download or read book Economic Crisis and Austerity in Southern Europe written by Maria Petmesidou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Europe has been hit hard by the global economic crisis and, as such, their welfare states have come under acute strain. Unmet need has sharply increased while significant welfare reforms and deep social spending cuts have been prominent in the crisis management solutions implemented by governments, labouring under EU constraints and the strict rescue-deal requirements for Greece and Portugal. This volume provides a systematic comparative appraisal of welfare-state reform trajectories across Southern Europe prior to and during the crisis, and traces the impact of austerity policies and wider recession upon income inequality and poverty. It brings together a number of cross-country studies on major social policy areas, raising crucial questions. What policy choices are driving reforms as Southern European economies work their way out of fiscal difficulty? Can the crisis provoke the improvement of institutional capabilities and recalibration of social? Or, instead, does structural adjustment indicate a significant policy turn towards the erosion of social rights? The contributions critically approach these issues and bring evidence to bear upon whether Southern European welfare capitalisms are becoming more dissimilar. This book was originally published as a special issue of South European Society & Politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Anarchism and the Crisis of Representation is intended to provide readers of literary criticism, art history, political philosophy, and the social sciences with a fresh perspective from which to revisit dead-end theoretical debates over concepts such as "agency," "essentialism," and "realism" - and, at the same time, to offer a new take on anarchism itself, challenging conventional readings of the tradition. The anarchism that emerges from this reinterpretation is neither a musty rationalism nor a millenarian irrationalism, but a living body of thought that points beyond the sterile antinomies of post-modern and Marxist theory."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis In the Name of Oil by : Ivan L. G. Pearson
Download or read book In the Name of Oil written by Ivan L. G. Pearson and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using recently declassified documents, author Ivan Pearson argues that although the Suez Crisis was cataclysmic on many dimensions, it did not mark a precipitous turning point in Britain's ability to affect events in the Middle East decisively. Although Suez wholly undermined British prestige, and revealed severe shortcomings in its military capabilities, this work states that these losses were considerably offset by the increasing ability of British policymakers to influence the United States--a country with an emerging presence in the region. In the Name of Oil documents the frequent bureaucratic infighting between the administration, state department, and CIA on the American side, as well as the way in which the British took advantage of the blurred line between communism and Arab nationalism in the Middle East to mislead the U.S. into pursuing policies that would protect the cheap oil supplied by British-owned oil giants such as the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company and the Iraq Petroleum Company.

Book Synopsis Community Resilience to Sectarian Violence in Baghdad by : Ami C. Carpenter
Download or read book Community Resilience to Sectarian Violence in Baghdad written by Ami C. Carpenter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-04 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent conflict in Iraq evolved from an insurgency against the interim U.S. led government (the Coalition Provisional Authority or CPA) into a sectarian civil war. Violence became widespread, especially in areas of Baghdad City such as Sadr City, Al Amiriyah, and Al Adhamiya. However, a number of multiethnic neighborhoods in Baghdad successfully prevented sectarian attitudes and behaviors from taking hold. Four communities stand out in their self-organization to prevent the escalation of violence. This book looks at what makes these communities different from other areas within Baghdad. In-depth interviews in Sunni-dominant, Shia-dominant and Mixed neighborhoods generated a few key insights about conflict-resilience, or the capacity to prevent structural changes associated with conflict escalation. Key factors turned out to be the organization of non-sectarian self-defense groups, place attachment, collective efficacy, active intervention to de-escalate tensions, and also the presence of local religious leaders who forbid sectarian attacks. The continuity or strength of interpersonal relationships supported by the integrated physical structure of these neighborhoods and internal versus tribal conflict resolution mechanisms played a role as well. This volume examines the characteristics of the communities that have successfully prevented the rise of violence, and how they are able to maintain qualities of resilience to violent conflict.
