Book excerpt: Base isolation, passive energy dissipation and active control represent three innovative technologies for protection of structures under environmental loads. Increasingly, they are being applied to the design of new structures or to the retrofit of existing structures against wind, earthquakes and other external loads. This book, with contributions from leading researchers from Japan, Europe, and the United States, presents a balanced view of current research and world-wide development in this exciting and fast expanding field. Basic principles as well as practical design and implementational issues associated with the application of base isolation systems and passive and active control devices to civil engineering structures are carefully addressed. Examples of structural applications are presented and extensively discussed.

Book excerpt: The Jan. 17, 1995, Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake was one of the worst disasters to hit Japan in almost half a century. It has been compared in its impact to the great Kanto (Tokyo) Earthquake of 1923. The Kobe-Osaka region held many similarities in its geologic and tectonic setting to many areas along the West Coast, and possibly, other areas of the U.S. A geotechnical reconnaissance to identify the relevant problems and issues was organized. This report provides a timely, first-hand overview of the type and extent of the geotechnical aspects of the damage.

Book excerpt: This volume gathers the proceedings of the 17th World Conference on Seismic Isolation (17WCSI), held in Turin, Italy on September 11-15, 2022. Endorsed by ASSISi Association (Anti-Seismic Systems International Society), the conference discussed state-of-the-art information as well as emerging concepts and innovative applications related to seismic isolation, energy dissipation and active vibration control of structures, resilience and sustainability. The volume covers highly diverse topics, including earthquake-resistant construction, protection from natural and man-made impacts, safety of structures, vulnerability, international standards on structures with seismic isolation, seismic isolation in existing structures and cultural heritage, seismic isolation in high rise buildings, seismic protection of non-structural elements, equipment and statues. The contributions, which are published after a rigorous international peer-review process, highlight numerous exciting ideas that will spur novel research directions and foster multidisciplinary collaboration among different specialists.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly three decades, the J. Paul Getty Museum has played a leading role in the development of seismic mitigation for museum collections. Contributors to this volume--ranging from museum conservators, mount makers, and historical archaeologists to seismologists and structural engineers--discuss and illustrate a wide variety of earthquake-mitigation efforts for collections, from the simple and inexpensive to the complex and costly. The book's essays examine the techniques applied to large collections and to small house museums, to exhibition cases containing objects as well as to monumental works of art and historical structures. Approaches range from securing and restraining objects to decoupling them from the ground through a variety of base-isolation mechanisms. These pioneering efforts have been developed in the face of significant challenges since, as any engineer, conservator, or mount maker who has undertaken this work can attest, a small sculpture can often be a far greater challenge to protect than a multistory building.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need to maintain the functionality of critical transportation lifelines after a large seismic event motivates the strategy to design certain bridges for performance standards beyond the minimum required by bridge design codes. To design a bridge to remain operational, one may stiffen and strengthen the load carrying members to increase the capacity, or alternatively use response modification devices such as seismic isolators to shift the dynamic characteristics of the bridge, henceforth reducing the seismic demands. Seismic isolation systems are attractive because they are directly conducive to accelerated bridge construction techniques. The two strategies are compared for a typical Utah highway bridge, using a three-span, pre-stressed concrete girder bridge that crosses Legacy Highway as a case study example.

Book excerpt: This book contains selected and expanded contributions presented at the 15th Conference on Acoustics and Vibration of Mechanical Structures held in Timisoara, Romania, May 30-31, 2019. The conference focused on a broad range of topics related to acoustics and vibration, such as analytical approaches to nonlinear noise and vibration problems, environmental and occupational noise, structural vibration, biomechanics and bioacoustics, as well as experimental approaches to vibration problems in industrial processes. The different contributions also address the analytical, numerical and experimental techniques applicable to analyze linear and non-linear noise and vibration problems (including strong nonlinearity) and they are primarily intended to emphasize the actual trends and state-of-the-art developments in the above mentioned topics. The book is meant for academics, researchers and professionals, as well as PhD students concerned with various fields of acoustics and vibration of mechanical structures.
