Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive overview of current housing practices across Asian cities based on facts and trends in the market. For many countries in Asia, the future of housing is now. This future is closely linked to successful theoretical advancement and policy practice in housing studies. This volume brings together twelve chapters divided across four thematic parts that sum up the concept and conditionality of housing in Asian cities. It studies housing through conceptual perspectives and empirical studies to explore established notions, cultures and practices relevant to the 21st-century post-reform context in Asia. Housing and property have long been economic drivers, leading many individual households towards better lives and associated social and community benefits, while also collectively improving the economic base of a city or country. This book examines the nature of the interplay of both state and market in the housing outcomes of these cities. With its extensive geographic coverage across South East Asia, South Asia, and the Far East and a cross section of different income groups, the book will interest reseachers and scholars in urban studies, architecture, development studies, public policy, political studies, sociology, policymakers in local and central governments, housing and planning professionals and commercial firms engaged in property markets or real estate in Asia. It will also provide ideas, tools and good practices for institutional enablement, stakeholders involved in these interventions, private sector organisations and NGOs.

Book Synopsis Social Security for the Elderly by : S. Irudaya Rajan
Download or read book Social Security for the Elderly written by S. Irudaya Rajan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book overviews the issue of population ageing in five countries in South Asia and projects the emerging scenarios. With a new field survey, it also documents existing policies and programs on pensions and social security, and examines their fiscal implications for the economy and society. Ageing of population is an inevitable consequence of the process of demographic transition. Being ahead, the developed regions of the world have long experienced its consequences; but the developing world is only now facing the travails of population ageing. Though the population under the age of 15 years in 2000 was estimated to be 3.3 times the size of the population of 60 years and above, the elderly are expected to surpass the number of children under 15 years by the year 2050. Among the elderly, it is the oldest old—those aged 80 years or more, whose numbers would increase most rapidly. Much of this growth would take place in the poor countries of the world. Five South Asian countries (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal) account for 100 million elderly persons in the beginning of 21st century and it is expected to reach 400 million in 2050. What are the fiscal implications of this tremendous growth for sustaining pensions and social security schemes in South Asia? Are these countries in need of pension reforms? Would these countries be able to provide good health care for the growing population of elderly persons afflicted by multiple diseases and disability? Experts from leading economic research institutions address the issue with a new survey conducted in each country. The book, in effect: Assesses the ageing scenario in five countries in South Asia: past, present, and future; Reviews existing policies and programs on pensions and social security for the elderly; Reports the findings of a sample survey in each of these countries conducted for this work in order to assess the nature, magnitude, and adequacy of various forms of pensions and social assistance; Suggests broad-based comprehensive pension and social security policies in South Asia. .

Download or read book Dropout of Girl-child in Schools written by Lakshmi Jain and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 2008 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a maiden publication based on research work in the field of women education. It has implications reaching far beyond the city of Bareilly (U.P.) - the area of field investigation. A genuine attempt has been made to explore the diverse historical, demographical, socio-psychological, educational as well as economic dimensions of women education. Very simple, everyday, down-to-earth happenings have been cited which will propel the readers and leaders to a higher level of both purpose and commitment towards enhancing women education. A vivid description through ample illustrations like maps, graphs, tables and photographs has been made. A detailed Bibliography and Questionnaire would help readers in further research. A comprehensive subject index would facilitate easy reference. A detailed study of government initiatives, Five-year plans and the current budget proposals has been made. The idea behind the book is to respond to the two challenges of (a) increasing the availability of education by expanding the number of schools for girls or taking the schools to the un-reached girls, thereby increasing supply and (b) improving the accessibility of education by reducing costs, thereby increasing demand.

Download or read book The New International Politics of South Asia written by Vernon Hewitt and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1997-09-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised and substantially updated, The new international politics of South Asia argues that the politics of the individual states of South Asia cannot be understood without reference to the regional and international context. The author emphasises the need to consider rapid political, social and economic change in the context of debates over ethnic identity and changes within the international system following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Recent changes have opened up new opportunities for the region, but have also exposed specific weaknesses. The author discusses India’s evolving relationship with the international economic system, economic reforms in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, as well as key issues such as the regional position on the NPT treaty, the Comprehensive Test Ban treaty, environmental issues, and the post-Cold War world order.
