Book excerpt: The Ahmadiyya Muslim community represents the followers of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835–1908), a charismatic leader whose claims of spiritual authority brought him into conflict with most other Muslim leaders of the time. The controversial movement originated in rural India in the latter part of the 19th century and is best known for challenging current conceptions of Islamic orthodoxy. Despite missionary success and expansion throughout the world, particularly in Western Europe, North America, and parts of Africa, Ahmadis have effectively been banned from Pakistan. Adil Hussain Khan traces the origins of Ahmadi Islam from a small Sufi-style brotherhood to a major transnational organization, which many Muslims believe to be beyond the pale of Islam.

Book excerpt: Our Teaching is an abridged version of the teaching of the Holy Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community as laid down in his book Kashti-e-Nuh [Noah’s Ark]. This book is addressed primarily to members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community for their moral and spiritual education. Its contents, however, are so spiritually-inspiring that anyone in search of truth and spirituality can derive benefit from it. It is a must read for anyone who wishes to understand the essence of Ahmadiyya beliefs and the standard of righteousness that Ahmadi Muslims must strive to uphold. This teaching is none other than what has been taught in the Holy Quran. Indeed, the Promised Messiah(as) and the Holy Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has said, ‘Whoever neglects even a minor commandment out of the 700 commandments of the Holy Quran closes the door of salvation upon himself.’

Book excerpt: Da’watul-Ameer (Invitation to Ahmadiyyat) was written in 1926, specifically addressing the Amir of Afghanistan, Amanullah Khan, who ordered the execution by stoning of three Afghan Ahmadi Muslims a couple of years earlier. Such atrocities underscored the need to refute the false allegations and misconceptions that the orthodox clergy had been circulating about the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. The purpose of the book, therefore, was to provide the King an authentic explanation of the beliefs, doctrines, and purpose of the Community, as well as the strong foundation upon which it stands. Although the specific events and the original book are now relics of the past, the book lives on as a general primer of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s doctrinal beliefs. Da’watul-Ameer elaborates upon the fulfilment of the prophecies made by the Holy Prophet Muhammad(sa) which are documented in the Holy Quran and the Ahaadees, highlighting their true essence and import. It presents an exposition of the claims of the Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad as of Qadian, and details the reasons in their support. It goes on to establish, on the basis of the Holy Quran and the Ahaadees, that the Promised Messiah and Mahdi who was prophesied to appear in the Latter Days had been fulfilled in the person of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as), and emphasises that humankind’s salvation lies in accepting and following him.

It was written in 1902 when an opponent in Mudh, India alleged that all prophecies made by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as) were false and that he did not possess the miraculous knowledge of the Arabic language he had claimed. In response, the Promised Messiah(as) wrote this book containing a lengthy Arabic Qasīdah [ode] in praise of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in a mere five days. He challenged his opponents to produce the like of it and announced a prize money of Rs. 10,000 which was his total worth at the time. No one arose to the challenge. Instead, a large number of residents of town of Mudh were decimated by the plague as prophesied in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam is a religion that inculcates the importance of being loyal to the country in which one lives. Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, peace be upon him, the Promised Messiah and Mahdi, and Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, always taught the same to his followers. However, Maulvi Muhammad Husain of Batala, a staunch opponent, sought to defame the author by sending false reports to the government alleging that the Promised Messiah, peace be upon him, was a man who secretly conspired against the state. Against this backdrop, the author was moved to pen this treatise, in which he outlines his own family background and the long-standing services of his family in support of the British government. He also presents a succinct summary of the teachings of his community. Moreover, the author explains that Muslims who believe in the return of a violent Mahdi who would forcibly convert the world to Islam could not be further from the truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, a global movement with more than half a million Ghanaian members, runs an extensive network of English-language schools and medical facilities in Ghana today. Founded in South Asia in 1889, the Ahmadiyya arrived in Ghana when a small coastal community invited an Ahmadiyya missionary to visit in 1921. Why did this invitation arise and how did the Ahmadiyya become such a vibrant religious community? John H. Hanson places the early history of the Ahmadiyya into the religious and cultural transformations of the British Gold Coast (colonial Ghana). Beginning with accounts of the visions of the African Methodist Binyameen Sam, Hanson reveals how Sam established a Muslim community in a coastal context dominated by indigenous expressions and Christian missions. Hanson also illuminates the Islamic networks that connected this small Muslim community through London to British India. African Ahmadi Muslims, working with a few South Asian Ahmadiyya missionaries, spread the Ahmadiyya's theological message and educational ethos with zeal and effectiveness. This is a global story of religious engagement, modernity, and cultural transformations arising at the dawn of independence.

Book excerpt: Simon Ross Valentine has written the first scholarly evaluation of the teachings, beliefs, and lifestyle of the Ahmaddiya Jama'at, an Islamic reform group founded in nineteenth-century India that currently boasts millions of followers worldwide. To the great aggravation of other Muslims, the Ahmadis assert that prophets existed after Muhammad, a controversial belief that has led to fierce persecution, especially in South Asia, where the government has declared the Ahmadis to be non-Muslims. Valentine explores other major claims made by the Ahmadis, including their assertion that Jesus, instead of dying on the cross (as Christians believe) or ascending to heaven after the crucifixion (as mainstream Muslims teach), in fact escaped from the Romans and settled in Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir and the alleged location of Christ's tomb. After an account of the life of the movement's founder, Ghulam Mirza Ahmad, Valentine discusses the history of the Ahmadis, their proselytization strategies, the role of mosques and madrasas, the position of women within the religion, and the Ahmadis' doctrine of a peaceful jihad.

He lived at Kush, to the south of Samarqand, but was expelled from there by Taimur when he conquered that land. Haji Barlas took shelter in Khurasan, and the family lived there till they came over to India, in the time of Babar. On account of their long residence in Persia, the Barlas tribe may be included among the Persians. Some authorities, however, say that Barlas is not a Moghul but a Persian tribe, as both Barlas and Mirza (the sur-title) are words of Persian and not of Turkish origin. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad himself says. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Ever since God Almighty has instituted the system of prophet-hood for the guidance of mankind, the opponents of these holy prophets, peace be on them, have always charged them with falsehood and untruth. They were called sorcerers and madmen and were described as disorderly and rebellious. Every prophet and God’s elect was treated in that manner. The same was the case with the Promised Messiah, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, peace be on him. when he put forth his claim of being the Reformer of the age and the Promised Mehdi, not only Muslim divines, but the leaders of other religions also, rose up against him and assailed him with false charges and insupportable objections. Muslim divines proclaimed that his teaching was opposed to Islam and the practice of the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and showered false charges upon him.

Book excerpt: Based on hitherto untapped source materials, this book charts the history of Muslim missionary activity in London from 1912, when the first Indian Muslim missionaries arrived in London, until 1944. During this period a unique community was forged out of British converts and native Muslims from various parts of the world, which focused itself around a purpose built mosque in Woking and later the first mosque to open in London in 1924. Arguing that an understanding of Muslim mission in this period needs to place such activity in the context of colonial encounter, Islam and Britain provides a background narrative into why Muslim missionary activity in London was part of a variety of strategies to engage with European expansion and overzealous Christian missionary activity in India. Ron Geaves draws on research undertaken in India and Pakistan, where the Ahmadiya missionaries have kept extensive archives of this period which until now have been unavailable to scholars. Unique in providing an account of Islamic missionary work in Britain from the Islamic perspective, Islam and Britain adds to our knowledge and understanding of British Muslim history and makes an important contribution to the literature concerned with Islamic missiology.

This monumental research work published in Urdu in three volumes was translated into English in 2008 by Hamid Rahman, PhD. It is widely considered to be the most authentic and complete portrayal of the great and tireless service rendered to Islam by the Founder of the Ahmadiyya Movement. The first two volumes, published in 1939 and 1940 respectively, consist of the Founder's life history, and also contain synopsis of each of his major Urdu, Arabic and Persian works. The third volume deals with his Islamic philosophy, thoughts, exposition of Islamic concepts, defense of Islam in reply to non-Muslim critics, and his mission of carrying the message of Islam to the West.

Book excerpt: This book has been published at the centenary of the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha‘at Islam, or Ahmadiyya Association for the Propagation of Islam, known also as the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement, which was founded at Lahore in May 1914. It is the result of new research and brings to light some forgotten and buried material. It shows that the Lahore Ahmadiyya is a direct continuation of the Ahmadiyya Movement as founded by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (d. 1908) and as led afterwards by his successor Hazrat Maulana Nur-ud-Din (d. 1914). It seeks to preserve the beliefs, mission and goals of this Movement as set down by these two guiding lights.
