Book excerpt: Foundations of Higher Mathematics: Exploration and Proof is the ideal text to bridge the crucial gap between the standard calculus sequence and upper division mathematics courses. The book takes a fresh approach to the subject: it asks students to explore mathematical principles on their own and challenges them to think like mathematicians. Two unique features-an exploration approach to mathematics and an intuitive and integrated presentation of logic based on predicate calculus-distinguish the book from the competition. Both features enable students to own the mathematics they're working on. As a result, your students develop a stronger motivation to tackle upper-level courses and gain a deeper understanding of concepts presented.

Appropriate for self-study or for use in courses called transition courses, this text introduces students to proof techniques, analyzing proofs, and writing proofs of their own. Written in a clear, conversational style, this book provides a solid introduction to such topics as the real number system, logic, set theory, mathematical induction, relations, functions, and continuity. It is also a good reference text that students can use when writing or reading proofs in their more advanced courses.

Book excerpt: Mathematical logic grew out of philosophical questions regarding the foundations of mathematics, but logic has now outgrown its philosophical roots, and has become an integral part of mathematics in general. This book is designed for students who plan to specialize in logic, as well as for those who are interested in the applications of logic to other areas of mathematics. Used as a text, it could form the basis of a beginning graduate-level course. There are three main chapters: Set Theory, Model Theory, and Recursion Theory. The Set Theory chapter describes the set-theoretic foundations of all of mathematics, based on the ZFC axioms. It also covers technical results about the Axiom of Choice, well-orderings, and the theory of uncountable cardinals. The Model Theory chapter discusses predicate logic and formal proofs, and covers the Completeness, Compactness, and Lowenheim-Skolem Theorems, elementary submodels, model completeness, and applications to algebra. This chapter also continues the foundational issues begun in the set theory chapter. Mathematics can now be viewed as formal proofs from ZFC. Also, model theory leads to models of set theory. This includes a discussion of absoluteness, and an analysis of models such as H( ) and R( ). The Recursion Theory chapter develops some basic facts about computable functions, and uses them to prove a number of results of foundational importance; in particular, Church's theorem on the undecidability of logical consequence, the incompleteness theorems of Godel, and Tarski's theorem on the non-definability of truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of numbers is generally considered to be the 'purest' branch of pure mathematics and demands exactness of thought and exposition from its devotees. It is also one of the most highly active and engaging areas of mathematics. Now into its eighth edition The Higher Arithmetic introduces the concepts and theorems of number theory in a way that does not require the reader to have an in-depth knowledge of the theory of numbers but also touches upon matters of deep mathematical significance. Since earlier editions, additional material written by J. H. Davenport has been added, on topics such as Wiles' proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, computers and number theory, and primality testing. Written to be accessible to the general reader, with only high school mathematics as prerequisite, this classic book is also ideal for undergraduate courses on number theory, and covers all the necessary material clearly and succinctly.

Book excerpt: Funded by a National Science Foundation grant, Discovering Higher Mathematics emphasizes four main themes that are essential components of higher mathematics: experimentation, conjecture, proof, and generalization. The text is intended for use in bridge or transition courses designed to prepare students for the abstraction of higher mathematics. Students in these courses have normally completed the calculus sequence and are planning to take advanced mathematics courses such as algebra, analysis and topology. The transition course is taken to prepare students for these courses by introducing them to the processes of conjecture and proof concepts which are typically not emphasized in calculus, but are critical components of advanced courses. * Constructed around four key themes: Experimentation, Conjecture, Proof, and Generalization * Guidelines for effective mathematical thinking, covering a variety of interrelated topics * Numerous problems and exercises designed to reinforce the key themes

Book excerpt: This text is intended for the Foundations of Higher Math bridge course taken by prospective math majors following completion of the mainstream Calculus sequence, and is designed to help students develop the abstract mathematical thinking skills necessary for success in later upper-level majors math courses. As lower-level courses such as Calculus rely more exclusively on computational problems to service students in the sciences and engineering, math majors increasingly need clearer guidance and more rigorous practice in proof technique to adequately prepare themselves for the advanced math curriculum. With their friendly writing style Bob Dumas and John McCarthy teach students how to organize and structure their mathematical thoughts, how to read and manipulate abstract definitions, and how to prove or refute proofs by effectively evaluating them. Its wealth of exercises give students the practice they need, and its rich array of topics give instructors the flexibility they desire to cater coverage to the needs of their school’s majors curriculum. This text is part of the Walter Rudin Student Series in Advanced Mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lev Semenovic Pontrjagin (1908) is one of the outstanding figures in 20th century mathematics. In a long career he has made fundamental con tributions to many branches of mathematics, both pure and applied. He has received every honor that a grateful government can bestow. Though in no way constrained to do so, he has through the years taught mathematics courses at Moscow State University. In the year 1975 he set himself the task of writing a series of books on secondary school and beginning university mathematics. In his own words, "I wished to set forth the foundations of higher mathematics in a form that would have been accessible to myself as a lad, but making use of all my experience as a scientist and a teacher, ac cumulated over many years. " The present volume is a translation of the first two out of four moderately sized volumes on this theme planned by Pro fessor Pontrjagin. The book begins at the beginning of modern mathematics, analytic ge ometry in the plane and 3-dimensional space. Refinements about limits and the nature of real numbers come only later. Many concrete examples are given; these may take the place of formal exercises, which the book does not provide. The book continues with careful treatment of differentiation and integration, of limits, of expansions of elementary functions in power se ries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Higher Arithmetic This book has been prepared for use in high schools and normal schools. The aim of the authors has been to furnish material that will develop skill in computation and the power to see and interpret the quantitative relations that arise in modern every-day life, and that will give a knowledge of modern business and industrial practices. Since the problems of any vocation are based upon the fundamental principles of arithmetic but vary somewhat in the different vocations, the authors have sought to lay a solid foundation for the arithmetic work involved in all vocations, rather than to prepare for any particular one. They hold that by obtaining a thorough grounding in the fundamental principles of arithmetic, by mastery of rapid and accurate computation, and by learning to interpret quantitative relations, one is much better fitted to make satisfactory progress in any kind of arithmetical work than if he had been made a mere automaton in some particular type of such work. Efficiency in computation requires: (1) a quick and accurate mental response to the fundamental facts and processes; and (2) the ability to see number relations that will save figures and even whole processes. Both of these phases have been provided for in the text. The first three chapters give abundant drill in operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Chapter IV on "Short Methods of Computation" should cultivate the ability needed in the second requirement for efficiency in computation. Most of the problems of the text are made from real conditions, are true to present-day customs, and thus contribute to social insight into business and industrial practices.
