Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of American Civilization: An Elementary History With Civics for 7a In this book, events and dates are considered as secondary in importance to the effect of events on the growth of civilization. The author has endeavored to follow the development of civilization from its beginnings in the supremacy of Phœnicia up to the discovery of America. Only such facts and events as have a bearing on our modem civilization have been included. Care has been taken to make the subject matter as clear and pertinent as possible, in order that the more important points in the growth of civilization may be impressed upon the child's mind, standing out above the interesting but irrelevant matter which is found in a general history of the world. Past Two of this book takes up the great inventions of the world's history. The whole book presents, as its title indicates, the foundations of American civilization, upon which may be built, in further study, the political and economic growth of the United States. The teacher will readily see that there is a large opportunity here for outside reading on general history. This reading should be done, not in the regular textbooks, but in books dealing with tales of the heroism of the great men of the world, or with some special phase of history. Such reading will be found valuable in awakening the child's interest and increasing his knowledge of history. The author acknowledges his indebtedness to Willis Duff Piercy for the privilege of using in Part Two certain material from his book entitled Great Inventions and Discoveries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of American Civilization: An Elementary History With Civics for 7a Many hundreds Of centuries ago, the first men came into existence. They had no homes, such as we have today, but were forced to seek shelter in the hollow trunks Of trees, in branches, or in caves. For food they were dependent on the wild animals they could kill, on the roots and berries that grew around them, or on fish in the streams near the place where they dwelt. They had no clothes, except perhaps the skins Of wild animals, and they led a very simple and primitive life. In fact, these first men were little better than the animals living around them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of American Nationality The authors hope that this Short History Of the American People may serve the purposes of two classes Of readers. They have aimed, in the first instance, to provide for college undergraduates pursuing an introductory course in American history, a general manual which will embody, in some meas ure at least, the enlarged knowledge and the new points of view made possible by the results of research in recent years. They believe also that this history will meet the requirements Of the general reader who desires a comprehensive View Of the subject within reasonable compass. For the student and the general reader alike, it is hoped that the bibliographical notes may point the way to more extended studies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Jews have built a political culture based on the principle of equal citizenship in a secular state. This durable worldview has guided their political behavior from the founding to the present day. In The Foundations of American Jewish Liberalism, Kenneth D. Wald traces the development of this culture by examining the controversies and threats that stimulated political participation by American Jews. Wald shows that the American political environment, permeated by classic liberal values, produced a Jewish community that differs politically from non-Jews who resemble Jews socially and from Jewish communities abroad. Drawing on survey data and extensive archival research, the book examines the ups and downs of Jewish attachment to liberalism and the Democratic Party and the tensions between two distinct strains of liberalism.

Book excerpt: In American Foundations, Mark Dowie argues that organized philanthropy is on the verge of an evolutionary shift that will transform America's nearly 50,000 foundations from covert arbiters of knowledge and culture to overt mediators of public policy and aggressive creators of new orthodoxy. He questions the wisdom of placing so much power at the disposal of nondemocratic institutions. As American wealth expands, old foundations such as Ford, Carnegie, Rockefeller, Pew, and MacArthur have grown exponentially, while newer trusts such as Mott, Johnson, Packard, Kellogg, Hughes, Annenberg, Hewlett, Duke, and Gates have surpassed them. Foundation assets now total close to $400 billion. Though this is a tiny sum compared to corporate and government treasuries, and foundation grants still total less than 10 percent of contributions made by individuals, foundations have power and influence far beyond their wealth. Their influence derives from the conditional nature of their grant making, their power from its leverage. Unlike previous historians of philanthropy who have focused primarily on the grant maker, Dowie examines foundations from the public's perspective. He focuses on eight key areas in which foundations operate: education, science, health, environment, food, energy, art, and human services. He also looks at their imagination, or lack thereof, and at the strained relationship between American foundations and American democracy. Dowie believes that foundations deserve to exist and that they can assume an increasingly vital role in American society, but only if they transform themselves from private to essentially public institutions. The reforms he proposes to make foundations more responsive to pressing social problems and more accountable to the public will almost certainly start an important national debate.
