Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number, variety, and political prominence of non-governmental organization in the Philippines present a unique opportunity to study citizen activism. Nearly 60,000 in number by some estimates, grassroots and support organizations promote the interests of farmers, the urban poor, women, and indigenous peoples. They provide an avenue for political participation and a mechanism, unequaled elsewhere in Southeast Asia, for redressing the inequities of society. Organizing for Democracy brings together the most recent research on these organizations and their programs in the first book addressing the political significance of NGOs in the Philippines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the People's Democratic Revolution explains the basic concepts and the instruments for achieving the Philippine revolution. The program of the people's democratic revolution seeks to realize the basic demands of the people in the political, economic, social and cultural fields in opposition to the semicolonial and semifeudal ruling system of big compradors, landlords and bureaucrat capitalists subservient to foreign monopoly capitalism. The Filipino people and their revolutionary forces have persevered in carrying out the new democratic revolution for more than half a century. They cannot accept the escalating conditions of oppression and exploitation under the semicolonial and semifeudal ruling system in chronic crisis. Sounding stronger than the psywar and gunfire of the oppressors and exploiters is the outcry of the people for national liberation, democracy, social justice and all-round development amid the worsening crises of the semicolonial and semifeudal ruling system and the world capitalist system. About the Author Jose Maria Sison led the reestablishment of the Communist Party of the Philippines in 1968 and the founding of the New People's Army in 1969. He is now among the world's most outstanding theoreticians in Marxism-Leninism-Maoism. He continues to do research and write on Philippine and global issues. About the Series: The International Network for Philippine Studies (INPS) is proud to present the fourth book of the Sison Reader Series, On the People;s Democratic Revolution. This will be followed by three successive volumes on the Communist Party of the Philippines, On the New People's Army and on the National Democratic Front of the Philippines, under the following titles: On the Communist Party of the Philippines, On Protracted People's War and On the United Front; all scheduled to be published within the last quarter of 2021.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The people” famously ousted Ferdinand Marcos from power in the Philippines in 1986. After democratization, though, a fault line appeared that split the people into citizens and the masses. The former were members of the middle class who engaged in civic action against the restored elite-dominated democracy, and viewed themselves as moral citizens in contrast with the masses, who were poor, engaged in illicit activities and backed flawed leaders. The masses supported emerging populist counter-elites who promised to combat inequality, and saw themselves as morally upright in contrast to the arrogant and oppressive actions of the wealthy in arrogating resources to themselves. In 2001, the middle class toppled the populist president Joseph Estrada through an extra-constitutional movement that the masses denounced as illegitimate. Fearing a populist uprising, the middle class supported action against informal settlements and street vendors, and violent clashes erupted between state forces and the poor. Although solidarity of the people re-emerged in opposition to the corrupt presidency of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and propelled Benigno Aquino III to victory in 2010, inequality and elite rule continue to bedevil Philippine society. Each group considers the other as a threat to democracy, and the prevailing moral antagonism makes it difficult to overcome structural causes of inequality.

A. CI, COPYRIGHT, 1943 BY CARIES P. ROMULO ALL RIGHTS kESfiRVED FIRST EDITION Dedicated To the Filipino soldiers who fought and died beside Americans on Bataan and Corregidor in defense of the Philippines, and to their brothers in the Far East the one billion inarticulate Orientals who are daring to lift their eyes toward the dazzimg hope of freedom. AUTHORS NOTE THE FIRST FOUR DOCUMENTS included in the Appendix . are the Magna Charta of the Philippines. They show the im portant steps in the evolution of the Filipino people to self government. That the Filipinos believed in democracy and thought along republican lines even before the advent of American rule in the Philippines is shown by I The Con stitution approved by the Philippine Republic in 1899. PREFATORY NOTE THIS is a living story of democracy. It is political science per sonalized. Americas work in the Philippines is a masterpiece in human relationship because it is human. I write it as a Filipino who is one of the beneficiaries of Philip pine-American collaboration. I write it so that America may know what she achieved in the Philippines. I write it also for the world that subject races may be informed of how the Filipino people in creasingly fought for their freedom, and that sovereign nations may profit by the example of America. For America was the only sov ereign nation in the Far East that in its hour of danger was able to count on the loyalty of its subject people. I write as a private citizen of the Philippines. The views expressed in this book are mine and are notofficial. I presume to speak for no government But I am convinced I bespeak the sentiments of all my Filipino comrades-in-arms who fought in Bataan and Corregidor. We know why and what we fought for there. My acknowledgment goes to President Manuel L. Quezon, who granted me leave of absence without pay from the Philippine Army and later placed me on inactive military status to General Douglas MacArthur, for having sent me to America from Australia on special detail to Harold Matson, for valuable advice and help to Evelyn Wells, my loyal friend, for research and co-operation and to Solomon Arnaldo of the office of the Commonwealth of the Philippines, for the appendices. I must not forget to dedicate a few words of appreciation to the memory of the late Very Reverend Father James M. Drought, Vicar General of the Maryknoll Mission, with whom, before his untimely death, I discussed various portions of this book. CARLOS P. ROMULO CONTENTS PAGE Introduction.
