Book Synopsis The Spanish Experience in Taiwan 1626-1642 by : José Eugenio Borao Mateo
Download or read book The Spanish Experience in Taiwan 1626-1642 written by José Eugenio Borao Mateo and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses in the Spanish presence in Taiwan during the years 1626-1642. It examines the motives which drove the Spaniards to come to Taiwan. There were two main reasons for the Spaniards to come to Taiwan from Manila; firstly, so that the civil authorities might counterbalance the Dutch expansion, which since 1625 had been threatening the traditional trade between Fujian and Manila; and secondly, to enable missionaries to find a staging post to enter Japan in moments of strong persecution, and to create an alternative entry point into China.

Book Synopsis Coxinga and the Fall of the Ming by : Jonathan Clements
Download or read book Coxinga and the Fall of the Ming written by Jonathan Clements and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-10-24 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fantastic true story of the infamous pirate; Coxinga who became king of Taiwan and was made a god - twice. From humble origins, Coxinga's father became the richest man in China and Admiral of the Emperor's navy during the Ming Dynasty. As his eldest son, Coxinga was given the best education and developed a love of poetry and the study of Confucius. From this unlikely beginning, it took the invasion of south China by the Manchu and the subsequent loss of both his parents - his father defected to the Manchu and his mother, a Japanese Samurai, died in battle - to turn Coxinga from scholar to warrior. Fiercely loyal to his exiled Emperor, Coxinga fought against overwhelming odds until his defeat drove him out to sea and over to Taiwan - at the time a lawless set of islands inhabited by cannibals. Self-styled king of Taiwan, Coxinga died at the moment of his triumph. His descendants ruled the island for two decades.
Book Synopsis (En)Gendering Taiwan by : Ya-chen Chen
Download or read book (En)Gendering Taiwan written by Ya-chen Chen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the diversity and richness of non-Mainland China and Taiwan-oriented gender issues from a unique Taiwanese perspective, in contrast to previous studies that have often placed Taiwanese gender issues under the huge umbrella of Mainland Chinese, Communist Chinese, or P.R.C. women’s and gender studies. In a follow-up dialogue to and with Liu’s, Karl’s, and Ko’s The Birth of Chinese Feminism, this book looks at the various metaphorical details of that “birth” and the different dimensions of Mainland Chinese versus Taiwanese feminism and gender issues. Although Chinese-heritage people share similar traditions, different gender problems have occurred in and challenged various local conditions of Chinese-speaking areas. Taiwan’s gender issues have reflected Taiwan’s unique historical, sociocultural, economic, political, (post)colonial, military, and diplomatic backgrounds, in ways unfamiliar to the many people with a Chinese background who are not Taiwanese. This volume gives a historical outline of the people and events that paved the way for the rise of Taiwanese feminism, and includes portraits of famous feminists, gender issues in institutions, and a variety of gender concerns.
Book Synopsis Archaeologies of Early Modern Spanish Colonialism by : Sandra Montón-Subías
Download or read book Archaeologies of Early Modern Spanish Colonialism written by Sandra Montón-Subías and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeologies of Early Modern Spanish Colonialism illustrates how archaeology contributes to the knowledge of early modern Spanish colonialism and the "first globalization" of the 16th and 17th centuries. Through a range of specific case studies, this book offers a global comparative perspective on colonial processes and colonial situations, and the ways in which they were experienced by the different peoples. But we also focus on marginal “unsuccessful” colonial episodes. Thus, some of the papers deal with very brief colonial events, even “marginal” in some cases, considered “failures” by the Spanish crown or even undertook without their consent. These short events are usually overlooked by traditional historiography, which is why archaeological research is particularly important in these cases, since archaeological remains may be the only type of evidence that stands as proof of these colonial events. At the same time, it critically examines the construction of categories and discourses of colonialism, and questions the ideological underpinnings of the source material required to address such a vast issue. Accordingly, the book strikes a balance between theoretical, methodological and empirical issues, integrated to a lesser or greater extent in most of the chapters.
Download or read book Siraya written by Alexander Adelaar and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-12-23 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siraya is a Formosan language once spoken around Tainan City in southwest Taiwan. This comprehensive study is based on an analysis of the language of the Siraya Gospel of St. Matthew, which was translated from the Dutch in 1661. It contains a grammar, lexicon and extensive text with interlinear glossing as well as an introduction with detailed background information. Siraya has many unique linguistic features, which are of great interest to the study of linguistic typology in general. They include various reduplication patterns, orientation prefixes (adding the notions of motion, location or comitation to a verb) and anticipating sequences. The latter are (usually) formal elements of the lexical verb, such as a first consonant or a first syllable, which are prefixed to the auxiliary. Siraya is also of crucial importance for the prehistory of Taiwan because it is one of the first languages to branch off from the Austronesian language family, which has more than 1200 members. The volume is a major contribution to the Siraya people who are keen to rehabilitate Siraya culture heritage and are endeavouring to learn their lost language again. It is a unique achievement in the endeavour to revitalise the traditional languages of Taiwan.

Book Synopsis Environmental History in the Making by : Cristina Joanaz de Melo
Download or read book Environmental History in the Making written by Cristina Joanaz de Melo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the product of the 2nd World Conference on Environmental History, held in Guimarães, Portugal, in 2014. It gathers works by authors from the five continents, addressing concerns raised by past events so as to provide information to help manage the present and the future. It reveals how our cultural background and examples of past territorial intervention can help to combat political and cultural limitations through the common language of environmental benefits without disguising harmful past human interventions. Considering that political ideologies such as socialism and capitalism, as well as religion, fail to offer global paradigms for common ground, an environmentally positive discourse instead of an ecological determinism might serve as an umbrella common language to overcome blocking factors, real or invented, and avoid repeating ecological loss. Therefore, agency, environmental speech and historical research are urgently needed in order to sustain environmental paradigms and overcome political, cultural an economic interests in the public arena. This book intertwines reflections on our bonds with landscapes, processes of natural and scientific transfer across the globe, the changing of ecosystems, the way in which scientific knowledge has historically both accelerated destruction and allowed a better distribution of vital resources or as it, in today’s world, can offer alternatives that avoid harming those same vital natural resources: water, soil and air. In addition, it shows the relevance of cultural factors both in the taming of nature in favor of human comfort and in the role of the environment matters in the forging of cultural identities, which cannot be detached from technical intervention in the world. In short, the book firstly studies the past, approaching it as a data set of how the environment has shaped culture, secondly seeks to understand the present, and thirdly assesses future perspectives: what to keep, what to change, and what to dream anew, considering that conventional solutions have not sufficed to protect life on our planet.

Book Synopsis Taiwanese Identity from Domestic, Regional and Global Perspectives by : Jens Damm
Download or read book Taiwanese Identity from Domestic, Regional and Global Perspectives written by Jens Damm and published by Lit Verlag. This book was released on 2007 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tension between Taiwan's globalization and its ongoing identity formation is clearly visible in the economic, political and societal spheres of the island republic. Against this background, the authors of this volume deal with the following questions: To what extent has Taiwan become part of the Greater China region and - in that sense - a part of "China"? How successful have Taiwan's endeavors been to escape "China", assert its own identity and communicate this to the international community? How does Taiwanese identity connect to its integration within "Greater China" and beyond, that is, to its being part of a gobalized (transnational) world? The varied focus and range of the papers in this volume show that politically, the result of the debate on Taiwan's (national) identity is undecided; economically, however, Taiwan has become part of a Greater China region and cross-Strait integration would thus seem to be inevitable.
