A modified version of the hard-disk model, in which the migration and attraction of atoms are introduced in simplified ways, is used to simulate the formation and development of nodules. This simulation reveals the self-extending nature of nodule growth and the dependence of the nodule shape and size upon the conditions of the coating's formation, including deposition geometry, migration, and capture length of atoms. By planting artificial seeds on substrate surfaces and overcoating with single and multilayer stacks, we have encourged nodular formation under controlled and variable deposition conditions. Fractured cross-sections of these coatings have been examined by scanning microscopy (SEM). A comparison between our experimental observations and the modeling results help explain the mechanisms for nodule growth.

A simple geometric model for nodule-shaped defects is commonly used to describe defects in optical coatings. No systematic study has been done, however, to prove the applicability of that model to standard optical coating deposition. Some defects are known not to have a classic nodule geometry. The present study uses atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy to characterize the topography of coating defects in a HfO2/SiO2 multilayer mirror system. Focused ion-beam cross-sectioning is then used to study the underlying defect structure. This work develops a model for defect shape such that the overall geometry of a coating defect, particularly seed size and depth, can be inferred from non-destructive evaluation measurements such as AFM. The relative mechanical stabilities of nodular defects can be deduced based on the nodule's geometry. Auger analysis showed that the seed material that causes nodular defects in HfO2/SiO2 multilayers is a hafnia oxide. Such characterization capabilities are needed for understanding the enhanced susceptibility of particular defects to laser damage and for developing improved techniques for depositing low-defect density coatings.

Book excerpt: Advances in the design and production of high damage threshold optical coatings for use in mirrors and polarizers have been driven by the design requirements of high-power laser systems such as the proposed 1.8-MJ National Ignition Facility (NIF) and the prototype 12- kJ Beamlet laser system. The present design of the NIF will include 192 polarizers and more than 1100 mirrors. Currently, the material system of choice for high-power multilayer optical coatings with high damage threshold applications near 1.06 [mu]m are e-beam deposited HfO2/Si02 coatings. However, the optical performance and laser damage thresholds of these coatings are limited by micron-scale defects and insufficient control over layer thickness. In this report, we will discuss the results of our 2-1/2-D finite-element time- domain (FDTD) EM modeling effort for rotationally-symmetric nodular defects in multilayer dielectric HR coatings. We have added a new diagnostic to the 2-1/2-D FDTD EM code, AMOS, that enables us to calculate the peak steady-state electric fields throughout a 2-D planar region containing a 2-D r-z cross-section of the axisymmetric nodular defect and surrounding multilayer dielectric stack. We have also generated a series of design curves to identify the range of loss tangents for Si02 and HfO2 consistent with the experimentally determined power loss of the HR coatings. In addition, we have developed several methods to provide coupling between the EM results and the thermal-mechanical simulation effort.

Book excerpt: Multilayer coatings manufactured from metallic hafnium and silica sources by reactive electron beam deposition, are being developed for high fluence optics in a fusion laser with a wavelength of 1053 nm and a 3 ns pulse length. Damage threshold studies have revealed a correlation between laser damage and nodular defects, but interestingly laser damage is also present in nodule-free regions. Photothermal studies of optical coatings reveal the existence of defects with strong optical absorption in nodule-free regions of the coating. A variety of microscopic techniques were employed to characterize the effects for a better understanding of the thermal properties of nodular defects and role of thermal defects in laser damage. Photothermal microscopy, utilizing the surface thermal lensing technique, was used to map the thermal characteristics of 3 mm x 3 mm areas of the coatings. High resolution subaperture scans, with a 1 pm step size and a 3 um pump beam diameter, W= conducted on the defects to characterize their photothermal properties. Optical and atomic force microscopy was used to visually identify defects and characterize their topography. The defects were then irradiated to determine the role of nodular and thermal defects in limiting the damage threshold of the multilayer.

Book excerpt: This is the second, revised edition of a book that has already proved invaluable to a wide range of readers. Written by a scientist for scientists and technical people, it goes beyond the subject matter indicated by the title, filling the gap which previously existed in the available technical literature. It includes a wealth of information for physicists, chemists and engineers who need to know more about thin films for research purposes, or who want to use this special form of solid material to achieve a variety of application-oriented goals.
