Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forests, Forest Lands, and Forest Products of Eastern North Carolina Indeed, nothing in the way of forest management could be more reckless and destructive than the treatment of our long-leaf pine forests during the past few decades. In the boxing for turpentine the trees have been cut so deeply and so extensively that both their vitality and strength have been greatly weakened, and the storms have prostrated many of the finest specimens. The lumberman and the storms have been followed by forest fires, which have com plated the destruction, already begun in so systematic a manner, of large areas. Started at times by thoughtless hunters at night, by sparks from an engine, by careless squatters or tenants, or even at times by land owners; in the hope of improving the grazing capacity of their lands during the following season, these forest fires sweep irresisti bly across miles Of territory, destroying not only the mature for est trees, but also the young growth; and thus destroy the forest of the future as well as of the present. And the few young pines which may have escaped destruction in this way soon follow the fate of the others by being destroyed by hogs. Many of these long leaf pine lands which lie in the sand hill regions of Eastern North Carolina have had their forest removed so completely that they have become waste lands, covered by a thin growth of nearly worth less scrubby oak. The total area of these waste lands is now nearly half a million acres, and is steadily increasing. This Report endeavors to show that while much of these Waste lands are worth less for other purposes, they can be reset with long-leaf pine forests if they can only be protected against forest fires and stock. And it is gratifying to find among the lumbermen themselves a growing realization of the fact that it is to their interest and to the interest of the public at large that this destructive policy give place to a more intelligent plan which, while it does not Seriously curtail the utilization of the existing forests, it looks to their protection and perpetuity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forests, Forest Lands, and Forest Products of Eastern North Carolina, Vol. 5 The law inaugurating the Geological Survey provides for the investigation of the timber as well as the mineral interests of the State and in carrying out this provision a systematic examination of the forests was begun in 1891 and has been carried on since that time. The plan adopted in this work embodies a fourfold investigation: first, as to the existing forest resources; second, as to how these resources can be utilized to the greatest advantage with out involving the destruction of the forests; third, as to how the waste lands of the State can be continuously restocked with valua ble trees, and thus our forest wealth perpetuated; and fourth, as to what can be done to encourage the development in the State of enterprises which will manufacture into finished products a larger portion of our timber instead of shipping to other States our crude. Materials for manufacture there. We have found, as will be shown in this Report and others which are to follow at an early date, that our forest resources are. Considerable: and they are now attracting lumbermen and capital from many sections of the country. The lumbering industry in the State is already a large one and is increasing in magnitude; indeed, already the timber is being cut with such rapidity that we mav fairly ask ourselves the question, how long it will be before our forest wealth, like that of many other States, becomes a matter of the past. And we mav also ask ourselves the question, whether it is possible that these resources can be utilized now and at the same time our forest wealth be perpetuated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1920s, in many a sawmill town across the South, the last quitting-time whistle signaled the cutting of the last log of a company's timber holdings and the end of an era in southern lumbering. It marked the end as well of the great primeval forest that covered most of the South when Europeans first invaded it. Much of the first forest, despite the labors of pioneer loggers, remained intact after the Civil War. But after the restrictions of the Southern Homestead Act were removed in 1876, lumbermen and speculators rushed in to acquire millions of acres of virgin woodland for minimal outlays. The frantic harvest of the South's first forest began; it was not to end until thousands of square miles lay denuded and desolate, their fragile soils—like those of the abandoned cotton lands—exposed to rapid destruction by the elements. With the end of the sawmill era and the collapse of the southern farm economy, the emigration routes from the South to the industrial cities of the North and Midwest were thronged with people forced from the land. Yet in the first quarter of this century, even as the destruction of forest and land continued, a day of renewal was dawning. The rise of the conservation movement, the beginnings of the national forests, the development of scientific forestry and establishment of forest schools, the advance of chemical research into the use of wood pulp—all converged even as the 1930s brought to the South the sweeping reclamation programs of the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Tennessee Valley Authority; in their wake came a new generation of wood-using industries concerned not so much with the immediate exploitation of timber as with the maintenance of a renewable resource. In The Greening of the South, this dramatic story is told by one of the participants in the renewal of the forest. Thomas D. Clark, author of many books about southern history, is also an active timber producer on lands in both Kentucky and South Carolina

Book excerpt: In 2002, forests covered 18.3 million acres in North Carolina, of which 17.7 million were classified as timberland. Hardwood forest types prevailed on 72 percent of timberland and planted pine stands occupied 15 percent. Nonindustrial private forest landowners controlled 78 percent of timberland, forest industry holdings declined to 8 percent, and publicly owned timberland totaled 13 percent. Volume of all live trees on timberland totaled 33 billion cubic feet, 66 percent of which was hardwood. Planted pines made up 3.1 billion cubic feet of the total. Loblolly pine was the dominant individual species with 6.7 billion cubic feet. Net annual growth of all live trees averaged 1.2 billion cubic feet, and annual removals averaged 1.2 billion cubic feet. Softwoods made up 51 percent of the growth and 59 percent of the removals. However, softwood removals exceeded their growth by 105 million cubic feet, whereas hardwood growth exceeded their removals by 104 million cubic feet. There were 249 sawmills, pulpwood mills, and other primary wood-processing plants across the State. The Coastal Plain accumulated more fuels than other regions of the State due to hurricane impacts on coastal forests.
