Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empires of Panic is the first book to explore how panics have been historically produced, defined, and managed across different colonial, imperial, and post-imperial settings—from early nineteenth-century East Asia to twenty-first-century America. Contributors consider panic in relation to colonial anxieties, rumors, indigenous resistance, and crises, particularly in relation to epidemic disease. How did Western government agencies, policymakers, planners, and other authorities understand, deal with, and neutralize panics? What role did evolving technologies of communication play in the amplification of local panics into global events? Engaging with these questions, the book challenges conventional histories to show how intensifying processes of intelligence gathering did not consolidate empire, but rather served to produce critical uncertainties—the uneven terrain of imperial panic. Robert Peckham is associate professor in the Department of History and co-director of the Centre for the Humanities and Medicine at the University of Hong Kong. "Charting the relays of rumor and knowledge that stoke colonial fears of disease, disorder, and disaster, Empires of Panic offers timely and cautionary insight into how viscerally epidemics inflame imperial anxieties, and how words and their communication over new technologies accelerate panic, rally government intervention, and unsettle and entrench the exercise of global power. Relevant a century ago and even more so today." — Nayan Shah, University of Southern California; author ofContagious Divides: Epidemics and Race in San Francisco's Chinatown "Empires generated anxiety as much as ambition. This fine study focuses on anxieties generated by disease. It is the first book of its kind to track shifting forms of panic through different geopolitical regimes and imperial formations over the course of two centuries. Working across medical and imperial histories, it is a major contribution to both." — Andrew S. Thompson, University of Exeter; author of Empire and Globalisation: Networks of People, Goods and Capital in the British World, c. 1850–1914(with Gary B. Magee)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Forester's Log is a unique forest story, told from a forester's viewpoint-the view of John La Gerche, one of the first generation of foresters in Victoria, who managed the Ballarat-Creswick State Forest in the late nineteenth century. La Gerche's Letter Books and Pocket Books have survived to provide a rare insight into a bailiff-forester's burdens in the 1880s and 1890s. As a bailiff, he daily had to confront prop cutters and woodcarters, 'scamps and vagabonds' who constantly defied forest regulations. His pioneering work helped shape today's forested landscape around the Central Victorian goldfields town of Creswick, 'the home of forestry'. In the detailed correspondence between this amateur forester and his bureaucratic masters lies the human story of an ordinary yet remarkable man, endeavouring to strike a fair balance between the competing demands of local woodcutters and distant officials. Angela Taylor reads between the lines to create a beautifully perceptive portrait of a vanishing character type-the truly committed public servant. A Forester's Log is an illuminating and charming book which will appeal to a wide range of readers, both urban and rural, including those interested in conservation and landscape heritage.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forester, Vol. 1 of 2: A Practical Treatise on British Forestry and Arboriculture for Landowners, Land Agents, and Foresters Although based on the sixth edition of The Forester (1894), the book now published is in reality a new work, in which is incorporated, in a condensed and improved form, the essence of all the other books I have written on Forestry during the last thirteen years, together with much original matter dealing specially with conditions in the United Kingdom, - the whole forming a complete treatise giving full consideration both to theoretical principles and to practice. The only portions where any resemblance to Brown's The Forester could still be retained are (1) the two chapters now arranged as Part II., The British Sylva; (2) part of chapter vii., Concerning Arboriculture, in Part III.; and (3) some of the details regarding Fencing in Part IV., chapter ii. But all of these have been greatly altered from their original form; and the only parts of the old book that have been reproduced consist of a few extracts, mainly about practical work in former days, which I have quoted here and there, wherever appropriate. These new volumes are intended to serve as a text-book dealing chiefly with British Forestry and Arboriculture (two really separate branches of Rural Economy, which have usually been synonymous in Britain), and with the reasonable possibilities there are of improving the existing condition of our woodlands, and of planting waste land for the growth of timber on business principles, with a fair prospect of profit.
