Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An epic adventure fantasy in which a group of teenage friends discover they are actually Greek gods training for a future war. “He stays.” Those two simple words would seal the fates of more than a dozen teenagers. Six years earlier, Ashley and her friends discovered they were reincarnations of the Greek gods when they survived a trip into the deadly forest and received a prophecy foretelling a war in their future. They had six years to prepare, to make sense of the prophecy. Ashley thought six years would be enough. But it wasn’t even close. Nothing in the gods’ tiny town or their beloved forest could have prepared them for the sudden problems that arise after the arrival of a mysterious teenage boy, a human. The gods all know he’s dangerous, but only Ashley, aka Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war, knows there is more to this boy’s destiny. And she has sworn to keep it a secret. Unfortunately, Lord Hades, the ruler of the Underworld, and his monster assassins don’t give the other gods much time to get to the truth. Now, the gods and the hero-in-training have no choice but to work together with a corrupt society to defend to the death their once-carefree reign.

In The Forest Gods’ Fight, the riveting sequel to The Forest Gods’ Reign, Athena, reincarnation of the Greek goddess of Wisdom and War, returns to her hometown from the corrupt Knowing camp, where believers in the myths live, after learning of personal attacks on her friends and fellow gods. Inconveniently, major problems await at her childhood home as well as in the gods’ beloved forest, and as the Olympians’ war with Hades reaches its climax, Athena is forced once again to confront the years-old prophecy head-on. But as the secret of the human hero Alec gnaws at her conscience, she pulls away from her friends just when they need her most. With the start of school only weeks away, time to win the war is dwindling, and the forest and its future have never before seemed so dark. Finally united with all the local mythical beings and the best Knowing Warriors, the gods are stronger than they’ve ever been. Always a page ahead, however, Athena can’t resist the chance to end the fight on her own, a decision that will ultimately end in either unquestionable victory or deadly destruction.

Book excerpt: While the core of VINE OF THE SOUL (the companion book to WHERE THE GODS REIGN), is the Amazonian plant life and the indigenous people's uses for it, WHERE THE GODS REIGN focuses primarily on the people themselves-though of course, Schultz (who was dubbed the father of ethnobotany by Prince Philip himself) is first and foremost a botanist and plants do figure into the mix: Schultes describes devil's gardens-empty patches in the otherwise thick forests where, for no apparent (or scientific) reason, nothing will grow-with the same precision and wonderment with which he discusses the many plants that grow upon other plants in their effort to get their share of the sun...and much more. But in this fine volume he begins with information about the histories of the various tribes and the lay of the lands on which they live; savannahs, dense forests, quartzite cliffs, sandstone mountains and caves and thunderous waterfalls are all accounted for; and all of his lyrical essays are accompanied by stunning black and white photographs. (There are over 140 photos in the book.) Schultes is often poetic here as well, describing not only the geography but, often, the exquisite emotions one experiences observing it in different seasons or different times of the day. Likewise, Schultes describes the people lovingly. He delights in their ability to be happy in spite of poverty, sickness, and, particularly in the case of the women, very hard work. He marvels at their relationships with animals, many of which they tame, so that their homes are surrounded by birds, monkeys, deer, and even boa constrictors (which live in the rafters and keep the mice and rat populations at bay). He marvels that while the children are almost never punished and enjoy a high degree of freedom (especially the boys), they show great respect for their elders as well as a great curiosity and appreciation for their surroundings. Schultes' pleasure-in the land and its people-is our pleasure. He is a remarkable scientist and a most eloquent guide. Reading WHERE THE GODS REIGN is probably as close as most of us will ever get to the kind of experience Schultes had staying in Amazon basin and learning about the many very different alternatives to living a life. But one can't help but long for that experience too. The book threatens to make explorers out of all of us-and a reader can't help but be disheartened upon remembering that there is not much left to explore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy City I am blessed to have been born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina--the Holy City. With her rich history, culture, and traditions spanning many generations, I am taken back in time as I walk along the cobblestone streets, stroll the Battery, take a carriage ride, and admire the historic homes and beautiful iron gates. Surrounded by water, wetlands, sandy beaches, and steeples rising far above the rooftops, this city by the sea will lure you into her beauty. Explore the waterways and marshlands, feel the soft beach sand between your toes, and observe the abundant birds and wildlife, and you too will be captivated by the treasures in this beautiful city and its surroundings. I have learned so many life lessons in the marshes, creeks, rivers, and beaches that surround this beautiful city. I still love to watch the sunsets, smell the pluff mud, and listen to the sound of the ocean as it breaks over the beach. The excitement never diminishes when a fish nibbles at my line, or I pull up a net full of shrimp, or chase a crab on the dock with his claws snapping in defense. I still love the feel of the wind on my face as I travel on a boat along the waterways. The nature and beauty that surround me give me a great spirit of peace, hope, faith, and love. I am able to see God's great creation everywhere I turn. I feel very close to my Creator here. I cannot possibly thank God enough for all the many blessings He has bestowed on me. Most of the devotions in this book come from true stories of my experiences in this beautiful place and the way these adventures have led to the faith I now have and want to share with you. I hope you will enjoy them too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No doubt, it is common to hear Christians today declaring their allegiance to God's kingdom. But what does this actually entail, and what difference does it make? In his characteristically provocative and daring way, Christoph Blumhardt articulates a vision of God's kingdom that turns much of our understanding of modern Christianity upside-down. In the present volume, available in English for the first time, Blumhardt leads readers to look at the gospel anew, challenging us to follow Jesus in a way that makes God's reign a reality, here and now. Bypassing vague notions of spirituality, as well as transcending simplistic approaches to faith, Blumhardt inspires us to actually live under the rule and reign of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Title #5 in the Bible Reader Series is a short-term, 8 session study of the book of Psalms. The series is designed for adult study groups wishing to explore a particular book of the Bible for a limited number of sessions. It uses NRSV. Psalms--This eight-session study of Psalms focuses on the central themes of the psalms. Nearly every psalm is related to the fact that God is present in the world and is lovingly and purposefully involved in the lives of people. Four lessons explore how the people of God are called to praise God who creates and sustains, acts on behalf of God's people, delivers them from trouble, and knows and cares. Four responses to God's actions are suggested: trust in God, keep God's laws, repent and confess, and worship and witness.
