In The Forest Gods’ Fight, the riveting sequel to The Forest Gods’ Reign, Athena, reincarnation of the Greek goddess of Wisdom and War, returns to her hometown from the corrupt Knowing camp, where believers in the myths live, after learning of personal attacks on her friends and fellow gods. Inconveniently, major problems await at her childhood home as well as in the gods’ beloved forest, and as the Olympians’ war with Hades reaches its climax, Athena is forced once again to confront the years-old prophecy head-on. But as the secret of the human hero Alec gnaws at her conscience, she pulls away from her friends just when they need her most. With the start of school only weeks away, time to win the war is dwindling, and the forest and its future have never before seemed so dark. Finally united with all the local mythical beings and the best Knowing Warriors, the gods are stronger than they’ve ever been. Always a page ahead, however, Athena can’t resist the chance to end the fight on her own, a decision that will ultimately end in either unquestionable victory or deadly destruction.

Book excerpt: An epic adventure fantasy in which a group of teenage friends discover they are actually Greek gods training for a future war. “He stays.” Those two simple words would seal the fates of more than a dozen teenagers. Six years earlier, Ashley and her friends discovered they were reincarnations of the Greek gods when they survived a trip into the deadly forest and received a prophecy foretelling a war in their future. They had six years to prepare, to make sense of the prophecy. Ashley thought six years would be enough. But it wasn’t even close. Nothing in the gods’ tiny town or their beloved forest could have prepared them for the sudden problems that arise after the arrival of a mysterious teenage boy, a human. The gods all know he’s dangerous, but only Ashley, aka Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war, knows there is more to this boy’s destiny. And she has sworn to keep it a secret. Unfortunately, Lord Hades, the ruler of the Underworld, and his monster assassins don’t give the other gods much time to get to the truth. Now, the gods and the hero-in-training have no choice but to work together with a corrupt society to defend to the death their once-carefree reign.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After winning an Oscar for Spirited Away, the Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki's animated films were dubbed into many languages. Some of the films are saturated with religious themes distinctive to Japanese culture. How were these themes, or what Miyazaki describes as "animism," received abroad, especially considering that they are challenging to translate? This book examines how American and German audiences, grounded on Judeo-Christian traditions, responded to the animism in Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984), My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2001), and Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (2008). By a close reading of adaptations and film reviews, and a study of transitions in their verbal and visual approaches to animism, this book demonstrates that the American and German receptions transcended the conventional view of an antagonistic relationship between animism and Christianity. With the ability to change their shapes into forms easily accessible to other cultural arenas, the anime films make a significant contribution to inter-religious dialogue in the age of secularization.

Book excerpt: Passionate fans of anime and manga, known in Japan as otaku and active around the world, play a significant role in the creation and interpretation of this pervasive popular culture. Routinely appropriating and remixing favorite characters, narratives, imagery, and settings, otaku take control of the anime characters they consume. Fanthropologies—the fifth volume in the Mechademia series, an annual forum devoted to Japanese anime and manga—focuses on fans, fan activities, and the otaku phenomenon. The zones of activity discussed in these essays range from fan-subs (fan-subtitled versions of anime and manga) and copyright issues to gender and nationality in fandom, dolls, and other forms of consumption that fandom offers. Individual pieces include a remarkable photo essay on the emerging art of cosplay photography; an original manga about an obsessive doll-fan; and a tour of Akihabara, Tokyo's discount electronics shopping district, by a scholar disguised as a fuzzy animal. Book excerpt: This book explores the myth, so abused by the mass media, that the Japanese are a grey, anonymous mass of efficient, obedient workers. The articles shed light on a Japan outside officialdom, a lively Japan of tumultuous and independent thought, inefficient and aesthetic, pleasure-loving, aggressive and wasteful, creative and anti-authoritarian. The book's truly international contributors examine the role in modern Japanese society of a range of leisure and play activities, from drinking to travel, football to karaoke, tattoos to rock fandom. They explore how things which seem like play in one context are deadly serious in another, and how the fun and enjoyment may be achieved in unexpected ways. They also draw attention to the importance of such activities in understanding the deeper structure and meaning pervading all areas of the society in which they take place. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of Japanese Studies, Sociology, Anthropology and Cultural Studies.

Book excerpt: If you pick a fight with Shroud, Lord of the Dead, you had better ensure your victory, else death will mark only the beginning of your suffering. A book giving its wielder power over the dead has been stolen from a fellowship of mages that has kept the powerful relic dormant for centuries. The thief, a crafty, power-hungry necromancer, intends to use the Book of Lost Souls to resurrect an ancient race and challenge Shroud for dominion of the underworld. Shroud counters by sending his most formidable servants to seize the artifact at all cost. However, the god is not the only one interested in the Book, and a host of other forces converge, drawn by the powerful magic that has been unleashed. Among them is a reluctant Guardian who is commissioned by the Emperor to find the stolen Book, a troubled prince who battles enemies both personal and political, and a young girl of great power, whose past uniquely prepares her for an encounter with Shroud. The greatest threat to each of their quests lies not in the horror of an undead army but in the risk of betrayal from those closest to them. Each of their decisions comes at a personal cost and will not only affect them, but also determine the fate of their entire empire. The first of an epic swords & sorcery fantasy series, Marc Turner's When the Heavens Fall features gritty characters, deadly magic, and meddlesome gods

Book excerpt: A pioneer of studies of the culture and people of India, Max M ller was one of the most popular, most respected, and most influential thinkers on world spirituality of the 19th century. Here, in a series of lectures delivered at Cambridge University and collected in a book first published in 1883, M ller defends India against Western small-mindedness and invites the reader to explore and appreciate all that India has bequeathed to global culture. From M ller's characterization of the gentle benevolence of Hinduism to his praise for the ancient beauty of Vedic literature, this is a passionate portrait of a culture long misunderstood and mischaracterized, and it remains an important work for anyone interested in the Indian nation.German author FRIEDRICH MAX MULLER (1823-1900) combined the studies of language, culture, and religion to create the discipline of comparative mythology. Among his many works are The Sacred Books of the East and History of Ancient Sanskrit Literature.
