Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to rebuild and modify the Ford Toploader 4-speed transmission, which shifted millions of Ford performance cars. Ford muscle cars of the 1960s helped the Toploader transmission quickly gain a reputation as the best of Detroit’s new 4-speeds. Introduced in 1964, this transmission was an immediate upgrade over prior models, and it paired well with Ford engines, such as the 289, 302, 351 (Windsor and Cleveland), 390, 427, 428, and 429 (Cobra Jet and Boss). The Toploader manual transmission was used in cars from Cobras to Galaxies and was mandatory equipment in the Boss cars. The simplicity of the Toploader transmission lends to an easy understanding of its operating procedure within its effective design. Even though the transmission was phased out toward the end of the muscle-car era (1973), the Toploader is still alive and well today, shifting race cars and performance cars with speed and ease. This book features step-by-step procedures in an easy-to-follow format by award-winning motorsports author John Carollo. It shows the intricacies of how Toploaders work, aiding in their repair and offering a full rebuild blueprint. Upgrading a Toploader is also covered using today’s modern parts to keep this versatile transmission relevant. Learn what to look for with Toploader parts, where and how they fit, and how they operate together via hundreds of informative color images. The Toploader shifted legendary cars, such as the Fairlane 427, Boss 302 Cougar, and the Mach 1 Super Cobra Jet. Whether you want to rebuild a Toploader yourself or you want to learn about the process and hire a professional, this expertly written book guides you through the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Ford’s original, home-grown small cars, the Mustang II and Pinto. Follow their progress through a difficult decade when Henry took on the imports, battled bureaucracy and gave America the economy and sports luxury subcompacts they wanted. This book details the successful design, building and sale of these small American Fords that faced domestic and foreign rivals. Mustang II and Pinto went through many permutations, appearance and performance packages – options that have helped the cars become collectible classics, and are prime examples of the decade the pony car survived. Going beyond stock standard were the customizers and racers that pushed the cars and their designs to the limit. Mustang II and Pinto graced enthusiast car magazine covers, and became stars in TV and films. They were small cars that made a big impact, and kept the Mustang galloping. Marc Cranswick draws on his lifelong passion for iconic American cars and this book delivers another unique insight into these models. His other books include Ford Midsize Muscle – Fairlane, Torino & Ranchero; MOPAR Muscle – Barracuda, Dart & Valiant; and Pontiac Firebird – The Auto-Biography.

From mid-century dirt tracks to today's super speedways, The Earnhardts: A Biography tells the remarkable story of a racing family—Dale, his father Ralph, and son Dale Jr.—whose careers span the full history of NASCAR and whose accomplishments define this unique American motorsport. Drawing on extensive research, including interviews with friends, family, and sports writers covering the NASCAR scene, Gerry Souter follows the Earnhardts' story from Ralph's short track racing in cars he built himself to Dale's record-setting career and shocking death to Dale Jr.'s emergence as one of the sport's most popular figures today. Through the lives of the Earnhardts, and their unmatched legacy of hard work and victory, readers see American stock car racing evolve from its rural Southern roots into a nationwide phenomenon.

Pierce offers a revealing new look at the sport from its postwar beginnings on Daytona Beach and Piedmont dirt tracks through the early 1970s, when the sport spread beyond its southern roots and gained national recognition. Real NASCAR not only confirms the popular notion of NASCAR's origins in bootlegging, but also establishes beyond a doubt the close ties between organized racing and the illegal liquor industry, a story that readers will find both fascinating and controversial.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the legendary names in the history of the Ford Mustang, one stands apart: Boss. Originally created to homologate the new Boss 302 engine for SCCA Trans-Am racing, the Boss 302 Mustang was built in limited numbers for the street. Designed by legend Larry Shinoda, the Boss cars were easily distinguished from their less potent stable mates by their unique front and rear spoilers, rear window slats, and the omission of the standard Mustang's (fake) rear fender brake ducts. Also standard was a shaker hood scoop and bold graphics. Though Mustang performance faded to all-time lows as the 1970s rolled on, there was good news on the way. The pairing of the venerable 302 Windsor engine with the new Fox-body platform for the 1979 Mustang might not have seemed significant at the time, but it was the first edition of what would become a performance institution in the late 20th century: the 5-liter Mustang was an overwhelming force on the streets and tracks through the end of its production in 1995. With no small amount of fanfare, Ford is paying homage to its performance past with the re-introduction of the 5.0 liter powerplant in the Mustang GT for 2011.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though American Motors never approached the size of Detroit's Big Three, it produced a long series of successful cars that were distinctive, often innovative and in many cases influential. This history examines AMC's cars from the company's formation in 1954 through its absorption by Chrysler in 1987. The Gremlin, Pacer and Eagle vehicles are examined in detail, as are the AMC custom cars of George Barris and Carl Green. The text details AMC's 1980s involvement with the French firm Renault and the design legacy of that joint venture, which includes the Hummer. The evolution of Jeep is covered from the 1960s through the 2000s. Features include some 225 photographs; a listing of AMC / Rambler clubs, organizations and business entities, with contact details; tables of detailed specifications and performance data; data on technical devices, trim packages and all model variations; a comprehensive account of AMC / Rambler appearances in film, television and cartoons.
