Book excerpt: In the fall of 1990, the Danish government started a comprehensive research pro gramme to improve the competitiveness of the Danish food sector: The Research and Development Programme in the Danish Food Sector (Det F!Ildevareteknologiske Forsk nings- og Udviklingsprogram, F0TEK). The programme was based on a combination of basic research to be carried out by universities and other research institutions, and a series of collaboration projects between researchers and food companies. The programme was originally designed as a technological research programme. However, in the planning phases of the research programme, the view that the development of new technologies and products may not be sufficient to improve competitiveness made some ground. A small comer of the overall research effort was therefore set aside for market-oriented research. This comer was filled by the research programme Market-based process and product innovation in the food sector (MAPP). MAPP was a joint research programme in which researchers from several Danish universities and business schools participated; it was coordinated by the Aarhus School of Business. MAPP set out to achieve a difficult task: to conduct high quality research on various aspects of the marketing of food products, to do so in cooperation with food companies, and to win under standing and recognition from the colleagues in the food technology departments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating an environment in which children in the United States grow up healthy should be a high priority for the nation. Yet the prevailing pattern of food and beverage marketing to children in America represents, at best, a missed opportunity, and at worst, a direct threat to the health prospects of the next generation. Children's dietary and related health patterns are shaped by the interplay of many factorsâ€"their biologic affinities, their culture and values, their economic status, their physical and social environments, and their commercial media environmentsâ€"all of which, apart from their genetic predispositions, have undergone significant transformations during the past three decades. Among these environments, none have more rapidly assumed central socializing roles among children and youth than the media. With the growth in the variety and the penetration of the media have come a parallel growth with their use for marketing, including the marketing of food and beverage products. What impact has food and beverage marketing had on the dietary patterns and health status of American children? The answer to this question has the potential to shape a generation and is the focus of Food Marketing to Children and Youth. This book will be of interest to parents, federal and state government agencies, educators and schools, health care professionals, industry companies, industry trade groups, media, and those involved in community and consumer advocacy.

Book excerpt: The food problems now facing the world—scarcity and starvation, contamination and illness, overabundance and obesity—are both diverse and complex. What are their causes? How severe are they? Why do they persist? What are the solutions? In three volumes that serve as valuable teaching tools and have been designed to complement the textbook Food Policy for Developing Countries by Per Pinstrup-Andersen and Derrill D. Watson II, they call upon the wisdom of disciplines including economics, nutrition, sociology, anthropology, environmental science, medicine, and geography to create a holistic picture of the state of the world's food systems today. Volume II of the Case Studies addresses the issues of domestic policies for markets, production, and the environment.

Book excerpt: The rapid growth of African cities means they have a great challenge in ensuring an adequate supply of food to satisfy their nutritional needs in terms of quantity, variety and taste, at accessible/affordable prices. Food supply and distribution systems (FSDS), whether formal or informal, are a key element. An efficient FSDS can increase the availability of food to the urban consumer, and at the same time increase the revenues of both traders and producers. However, there are a number of constraints that impede the efficiency of FSDS and these are discussed in the papers in this Bulletin that address the whole issue of food supply and food security. They are addressed towards urban managers and planners together with professionals and researchers concerned with urban food security.

Book excerpt: Marketing scholars have a long history of conducting research on how marketing affects the welfare of society. A significant body of knowledge has developed to look beyond marketing's impact on the corporate bottom line towards the affects of marketing on consumer sovereignty, public health, economic growth, and other aspect of societal welfare. The large and growing amount of research has become fragmented and diverse. There is a need for a volume to pull all of this research together to facilitate the assessment of what we have learned and what we need to study further. This volume fills that need! Handbook of Marketing and Society presents the first comprehensive, in-depth examination of scholarly research on how marketing affects societal welfare. Drawing on the talents of a distinguished group of contributors, the editors have assembled key reviews, analyses, and perspectives on a broad range of research topics including deceptive advertising, warning labels, trademark infringement, antitrust enforcement, environmental labels, privacy protection, social marketing, and corporate societal marketing. An unifying model is presented in the introduction that illustrates the linkage of marketing knowledge, marketing decisions, and societal welfare. Each chapter covers, in a purposeful way, a different link or path through which marketing can affect societal welfare. Future research needs are identified in each chapter in order to help focus marketing thinking and marketing practice serve society more effectively. Academics, graduate students, and others interested in marketing's role in society will find this a valuable resource and an excellent guidebook for future research.
