Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Hydrology and Water Resources by : Reginald W. Herschy
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Hydrology and Water Resources written by Reginald W. Herschy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-07-31 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fresh water supplies of the Earth are finite and as the world's population continues to grow humanity's thirst for this water seems unquenchable. Intense pressure is being exerted upon freshwater resources and a lack of adequate clean water is seen as one of the most serious global problems for the 21st century. Indeed it has been said that the next war will be fought over water, not oil. Human health and the health of supporting ecosystems increasingly depends upon our ability to find, control, manage and understand water. In a single volume, The Encyclopedia of Hydrology and Water Resources provides the reader with a comprehensive overview and understanding of the diverse field of hydrology. The intimate inclusion of material on water resources emphasizes the practical applications of this field, applications which are indispensable in any modern approach to the subject. This volume is a vital reference for all hydrologists, hydrogeologists and water engineers worldwide, whether they are concerned with the exploitation of new sources of water, the protection and management of existing reserves, or the science of surface water and groundwater flow. 114 eminent scientists from 17 countries worldwide have contributed to this authoritative volume. Superbly illustrated throughout, it includes almost 300 entries on a range of key topics, including arid and semi-arid zones, climates and climate change, floods and droughts, desertification, entropy, flow measurement, groundwater, hydrological cycle, hydrological models, infiltration, karst hydrology, paleohydrology, precipitation, remote sensing, river pollution prevention, rivers, lakes and seas, satellite hydrology, soil erosion, water treatment, water use, weather radar, and world water balance.
Book Synopsis The Hydraulics of Open Channel Flow by : Hubert Chanson
Download or read book The Hydraulics of Open Channel Flow written by Hubert Chanson and published by Wiley. This book was released on 1999-09-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hydraulics of Open Channel Flow is a major new textbook for senior undergraduates and postgraduate students. Dr Chanson first introduces the basic principles of open channel flow hydraulics, namely the continuity, Bernoulli and momentum principles. Applications include short transitions (e.g. intake), hydraulic jumps and flow resistance. The key topics of sediment transport, hydraulic modelling and the design of hydraulic structures are then developed in turn. This innovative textbook contains numerous examples, including practical applications, and is fully illustrated with line drawings and photographs in colour and black and white. Exercises - located at the end of each chapter and as revision sections at the end of each part - form an integral part of the text. The book concludes with major assignments, which assimilate all the knowledge into a fully coherent whole. Solutions to exercises, together with the shareware software Hydroculv, are available from the Web at: Key Features: Ideal for Use by Students and Lecturers in Civil and Environmental Engineering Numerous Exercises and Examples, Including a Supporting Website, to Aid the Reader’s Understanding Comprehensive Coverage of the Basic Principles and the Key Application Areas of the Hydraulics of Open Channel Flow the Reader is Taken Step by Step from the Basic Principles to the More Advanced Design Calculations

Book Synopsis Long-Throated Flumes and Broad-Crested Weirs by : M.G. Bos
Download or read book Long-Throated Flumes and Broad-Crested Weirs written by M.G. Bos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of water management, structures that measure the flow rate in open channels are used for a variety of purposes: (i) In hydrology, they measure the discharge from catchments; (ii) In irrigation, they measure and control the distribution of water at canal bifurcations and at off-take structures; (iii) In sanitary engineering, they measure the flow from urban areas and industries into the drainage system; (iv) In both irrigation and drainage, they can control the upstream water at a desired level. This thesis represents an attempt to place such flow measurements on a solid foundation by explaining the theory of water flow through 'long-throated flumes' and their hydraulically related 'broad-crested weirs'. On the basis of this theory, and on practical experience, these structures are recommended for use whenever the water surface in the channel at the measuring site can remain free. The thesis concludes with a design procedure that will facilitate the application of these structures. The idea to undertake research on discharge measurement structures was born upon my appointment as the first civil engineer with the International Institute for Land Reclamation and Improvement (ILRI). Because my recruiter, Ir. J.M. van Staveren, then Director of ILRI, had left the Institute before my arrival, and because I was the 'first of my kind' in an agricultural environment, I looked for contact and found - vii- support from: the late Prof. Ir. J. Nugteren, Prof. Ir.
