Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Florentine Histories, Vol. 1 of 2 For: three hundred years the Florentine Histories have been regarded with veneration by the scholars of Europe. It is one of those few works to which the judgment of successive generations has assigned a high place in the annals of the world. It has been consulted by the student of History to explore the majestic ruins of the Roman empire, for the origin of all modern states-by the philosopher to trace the progress of light and liberty, as they travelled down through the gloom of the middle ages - by the vindicators of man and of truth, to read the story of their servitude, their struggles and their triumphs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Florentine History, Vol. 1 of 2 When first I resolved to write the History of the affairs, foreign and domestic, of the Florentine people, my intention was to begin my narrative from the year of our Lord 1434, at which date the House of Medici, through the merits of Cosimo and of his father Giovanni, obtained greater authority in Florence than any other family in that city. For I thought to myself that Messer Lionardo of Arezzo and Messer Poggio, both of them admirable historians, must have recorded at length all that had taken place before that time. But afterwards, having diligently studied their writings with a View to learn what order and methods they had followed, and by imitating these make my own History more attractive to the reader, I found that while they had been most circumstantial in their account of the various wars waged by the Florentines against foreign Princes and Peoples, as regards civil discords and intestine feuds, and the effects following from them, they had either been wholly silent or had treated them so briefly as to afford the reader neither pleasure nor profit. (this course I believe them to have taken, either because they thought such matters too trivial for written record or else through fear of offending the descendants of those persons whom, in writing of them, they would have had occasion to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Florence: And of the Affairs of Italy; From the Earliest Times to the Death of Lorenzo the Magnificent Together With the Prince and Various Historical Tracts Italy, in' Machiavelli's day, consisted of five great powers and of a larger number of petty States which remained inde pendent without being powerful. The Papacy, Naples, Flor ence, Milan, and Venice overtopped the rest and contended with each other so unscrupulously that there was no real hope of uniting them against a foreign foe, whether it might be France or Spain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medallions From Early Florentine History The following pages are not intended as a complete and detailed history of Early Florence. The important task of writing such a work has already been accomplished by abler pens. The object of the present volume has been rather to detach from the phantasmagoria of mediæval Italian politics certain of the more striking and important events connected with Florence; to free as far as possible from the dark atmosphere of petty intrigue, by which they are apt to be obscured and overshadowed, some of the most picturesque incidents, some of the most attractive personages, out of that entrancing but confused past. It has been endeavoured to place these before the reader as a sequence of Medallions rather than to weave them into a fixed design; to display them thus, hung as it were separately and with space for each to be viewed against its own background, instead of on those overcrowded walls of mediæval history where they of right belong, but where they may easily fail to acquire their due significance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping and beautifully written narrative that reads like a novel, Fire in the City presents a compelling account of a key moment in the history of the Renaissance, illuminating the remarkable man who dominated the period, the charismatic Girolamo Savonarola. Lauro Martines, whose decades of scholarship have made him one of the most admired historians of Renaissance Italy, here provides a remarkably fresh perspective on Savonarola, the preacher and agitator who flamed like a comet through late fifteenth-century Florence. The Dominican friar has long been portrayed as a dour, puritanical demagogue who urged his followers to burn their worldly goods in "the bonfire of the vanities." But as Martines shows, this is a caricature of the truth--the version propagated by the wealthy and powerful who feared the political reforms he represented. Here, Savonarola emerges as a complex and subtle man, both a religious and a civic leader--who inspired an outpouring of political debate in a city newly freed from the tyranny of the Medici. In the end, the volatile passions he unleashed--and the powerful families he threatened--sent the friar to his own fiery death. But the fusion of morality and politics that he represented would leave a lasting mark on Renaissance Florence. For the many readers fascinated by histories of Renaissance Italy--such as Brunelleschi's Dome or Galileo's Daughter, and Martines's acclaimed April Blood--Fire in the City offers a vivid portrait of one of the most memorable characters from that dazzling era.

Book excerpt: Leonardo Bruni (1370-1444), the leading civic humanist of the Italian Renaissance, served as apostolic secretary to four popes (1405-1414) and chancellor of Florence (1427-1444). He was famous in his day as a translator, orator, and historian, and was the best-selling author of the fifteenth century. Bruni's History of the Florentine People in twelve books is generally considered the first modern work of history, and was widely imitated by humanist historians for two centuries after its official publication by the Florentine Signoria in 1442. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Florence Its History, the Medici, the Humanists, Letters, Arts Italy in the thirteenth century carried on and brought to its crowning point the work of civilization which France in the twelfth century had started by means of the crusades, the establishment of communal franchises, and the foundation of the University Of Paris. The symbol created by the genius Of Lucre tius, where the successive labor Of generations is rep resented by running-men passing their torches from hand to hand, had never been realized with so much grandeur; the sacred torches had fallen from French hands, and had been picked up by Italy, in whose grasp they emitted a light which dazzled the whole world. Rome, notwithstanding the Barbarian invasion, the schism, and the exile Of the Papacy, still retained the recollection Of her glorious past, brought even more vividly before her by the superb monuments which had withstood the ravages Of time and Of man. But even Rome, like the rest of Italy, acknowledged the superiority of Florence comparable to Athens itself, and all the cities Of Italy did homage to her genius.
