Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Country's Flag, and the Flags of Foreign Countries Looking more carefully at the difference between the two directions of the new education we can see what each accomplishes. There is first an effort to train the original powers of the individual and make him self-active, quick at observation, and free in his thinking. Next, the new education endeavors, by the reading of books and the study of the wisdom of the race, to make the child or youth a participator in the results of experience of all mankind. These two movements may be made antagonistic by poor teaching. The book knowledge, containing as it does the precious lesson of human experience, may be so taught as to bring with it only dead rules of conduct, only dead scraps of information, and no stimulant to original thinking. Its contents may be memorized without being understood. On the other hand, the self-activity of the child may be stimulated at the expense of his social well-being - his originality may be cultivated at the expense of his rationality. If he is taught persistently to have his own way, to trust only his own senses. To cling to his own opinions heedless of the experience of his fellows, he is pre paring for an unsuccessful, misanthropic career, and is likely enough to end his life in a madhouse. It is admitted that a too exclusive study of the knowledge found in books, the knowledge which is aggregated from the experience and thought of other people, may result in loading the mind of the pupil with material which he can not use to advantage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from "Old Glory" The Flag of Our Country: A Study in History and a Lesson in Paper Folding, Also Some Easy Lessons in Cutting and Folding The author of these pages has endeavored to supply, in a convenient form for the class _room, such data concerning the history of our flag as he considered most useful to the progressive teacher. During the years in which he has been engaged in teaching, various drawings have been made by him, and, in the following pages these have been placed at. The service of. Teachers. It is believed that love of country. And reverence for our flag should be incul'cated in all the work of our schools. Of course something beside a per cent examination or a diploma is needed to fit a teacher for the kind of work required in teaching patriotism in our public schools. The teacher must feel the senti ment individually, and heart and soul must be in the effort. The beautiful ceremony of the Saluta tion of the Flag, educative, inspiring, and uplifting as it most certainly is, should not be confined to the Industrial Schools of New York City. Each child incur public schools needs this daily re minder of his duties and his privileges. The study of the national flag as a thing of beauty is some thing that should be undertaken by teachers, so. That they will not, at least, as we have heard con cerning one hypercritical instructor, teach that the colors m 0111 flag are not such as harmonize. Be yond all theory of color must be the greater harmony of relation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from This Country of Ours the Story of the United States Four years have come and gone since first you asked me to write a Story of the United States lest you should grow up knowing nothing of your own country. I think, how ever, that you are not yet very grown up, not yet too proud and great to read my book. But I hope that you know something already of the history of your own coun try. For, after all, you know, this is only a play book. It is not a book which you need knit your brows over, or in which you will find pages of facts, or politics, and long strings of dates. But it is a book, I hope, which when you lay it down will make you say, I'm glad that I was born an American. I'm glad that I can salute the stars and stripes as my flag. Yes, the flag is yours. It is in your keeping and in that of every American boy and girl. It is you who in the next generation must keep it flying still over a people free and brave and true, and never in your lives do aught to dim the shining splendour of its, silver stars. After the voyage of Henry Hudson, a company of Swedes made a settlement on the Delaware River. This had been planned by the great Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden. That colony will be the jewel of my kingdom, he said; but the Lion of the North was Slain in battle, and his twelve-year-old daughter Chris tina had become queen. That is why the loyal Swedes named their little fortification Fort Christiana, and over it they raised the flag of their country, a blue banner with a yellow cross.
