Book excerpt: For years, Vine’s Expository Dictionary has been the standard word study tool for pastors and laypeople, selling millions of copies. But sixty-plus years of scholarship have shed extensive new light on the use of biblical Greek and Hebrew, creating the need for a new, more accurate, more thorough dictionary of Bible words. William Mounce, whose Greek grammar has been used by more than 100,000 college and seminary students, is the editor of this new dictionary, which will become the layperson’s gold standard for biblical word studies. Mounce’s is ideal for the reader with limited or no knowledge of Greek or Hebrew who wants greater insight into the meanings of biblical words to enhance Bible study. It is also the perfect reference for busy pastors needing to quickly get at the heart of a word’s meaning without wading through more technical studies. What makes Mounce’s superior to Vine’s? The most accurate, in-depth definitions based on the best of modern evangelical scholarship Both Greek and Hebrew words are found under each English entry (Vine’s separates them) Employs both Strong’s and G/K numbering systems (Vine’s only uses Strong’s) Mounce’s accuracy is endorsed by leading scholars

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Jesus feeding the five thousand is found in all four Gospels, and is told in two of them twice. Roger David Aus primarily explores the many facets of early Palestinian Judaism which inform the story, especially in regard to the miracle-worker Elisha. He describes four major motifs in the narrative, as well as the Markan and Johannine redaction. In addition, he analyzes the account's Semitic background, genre and historicity, and its part in a miracle collection.

This book was released on 2004-10 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this dictionary is to give an account of everything that relates to Christ - His Person, Life, Work, and Teaching. It is in a sense complementary to the Dictionary of the Bible, in which, of course, Christ has a great place. But a dictionary of the Bible, being occupied mainly with things biographical, historical, geographical, or antiquarian, does not give attention to the things of Christ sufficient for the needs of the preacher, to whom Christ is everything. This is, first of all, a preacher's dictionary. The authors of the articles have been carefully chosen from among those scholars who are, or have been, themselves preachers. And even when the articles have the same titles as articles in the Dictionary of the Bible, they are written by new men, and from a new standpoint. It is thus a work which is quite distinct from, and altogether independent of, the Dictionary of the Bible. It is called a Dictionary of Christ and the Gospels, because it includes everything that the Gospels contain, whether directly related to Christ or not. Its range, however, is far greater than that of the Gospels. It seeks to cover all that relates to Christ throughout the Bible and in the life and literature of the world. There will be articles on the Patristic estimate of Jesus, the Medieval estimate, the Reformation and Modern estimates. There will be articles on Christ in the Jewish writings and in the Muslim literature. Much attention has been given to modern thought, whether Christian or anti-Christian. Every aspect of modern life, in so far as it touches or is touched by Christ, is described under its proper title. James Hastings (1852-1922) was a distinguished scholar and pastor. He was founder and editor of the Expository Times and is also well known for editing the five-volume Dictionary of the Bible, as well as the Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics, the Dictionary of Christ and the Gospels, and the Dictionary of the Apostolic Church.

Book excerpt: In 1967, John U. Monro, dean of the college at Harvard, left his twenty-year administrative career at that prestigious university for a teaching position at Miles College -- an unaccredited historically black college on the outskirts of Birmingham, Alabama. This unconventional move was a natural continuation of Monro's life-long commitment to equal opportunity in education. A champion of the underprivileged, Monro embodied both the virtues of the Greatest Generation and the idealism of the civil rights era. His teaching career spanned more than four decades, and, as biographer Toni-Lee Capossela demonstrates, his influence reached well beyond his lifetime. In addition to being a talented administrator, Monro was a World War II veteran, a crusading journalist, a civil rights proponent, and a spokesman for the fledgling Peace Corps. His dedication to social justice outlasted the fervor of the 1960s and fueled bold initiatives in higher education. While at Harvard he developed a financial aid formula that became the national template for needs-based scholarships and earned him the title "The Father of Modern Financial Aid." During his decade at Miles College he spearheaded a satellite freshman program in the economically depressed Greene County, then went on to help design a literacy program, a senior research requirement, and a writing-across-the-curriculum program at Tougaloo College. When hearing and memory loss drove him from the classroom, he moved his base of operations to Tougaloo's Writing Center, working with students in a collaborative relationship that suited his personality and teaching style. Only in 1996, after struggling with the symptoms of Alzheimer's for several years, did he retire with great reluctance. John U. Monro: Uncommon Educator is a tribute to this passionate teacher and an affirmation of how one person can inspire many to initiate positive and lasting change.

Book excerpt: Chinese As It Is: A 3D Sound Atlas is a relatively small volume (radical index + 190 pages of text) but its size is deceptive as it provides a carefully constructed window on the entire language. How so? The core of the book is a 60-page table comprised of four columns and 400 rows. Into this matrix, the sound system is loaded, then each cell is occupied by one or more characters, for a grand total of 2394 characters. Of these, a beginner's subset of 903 characters is clearly called out, and in this sense the book doubles as a list of "First 1000 Characters" in the curriculum...but with several twists that make it potentially of interest to the graduate student as well. In particular, all romanizations are color-coded to indicate different degrees of "tonal weighting"; this is what makes the atlas three-dimensional. Here are some details about the book's special features that set it apart from all similar-looking offerings on the market: 1] Multiple aids to situational awareness: a] Rather than let the four tones of Mandarin be folded into a single dimension, they are made continually visible as the four columns of a 4x400 array, thus honoring them as an integral part of the "soundscape." b] For the romanized entry that accompanies each character, Dr. Boyce lets the color of its font provide an extra layer of information as follows: If there is a SINGLE second-tone word in the language, he prints the entry in red: tang. If there are SEVERAL second-tone tang-words, then he prints the entry in black: tang. If there is a PLETHORA of second-tone tang-words, then in green: tang. And so on. By internalizing this "tonal weighting," the student develops 3D awareness about where s/he is in the soundscape. 2] Avoidance of the 1-character 1-word fallacy: In certain contexts, an adult could infer that 'hazel' and 'wal' were meant as ad hoc abbreviations of 'hazelnut' and 'walnut'; but that fact would hardly justify us teaching a child that "A wal is a kind of nut," as though wal were a legitimate word. In this volume, the author is at pains to point out every hazel- or wal-type situation, rather than gloss over it, as usually happens in books that introduce h]an-z]i to foreigners. 3] Dr. Boyce has carefully chosen his "First 1000 Characters" for their pertinence to the soundscape as it exists in the head of the native speaker. At its core, his list of 1000 overlaps with other such lists, but around the "edges" it is significantly different, as a consequence of that premise.

Book excerpt: This collection focuses on the work of the major pioneers working in the 1920s and 1930s whose research and writings laid the methodological foundations for post-World War II British approaches to English as a foreign language teaching (ELT). These early pioneers included Harold E. Palmer (in Japan), Michael West (in India), and Laurence Faucett (in China). Separately and jointly (at the 1934-5 'Carnegie Conference'), they succeeded in establishing a principled basis for the teaching of English to speakers of other languages, different in significant respects from teaching English as a 'first language' in Britain and the Empire.
