Book Synopsis The Master of Life by : William Douw Lighthall
Download or read book The Master of Life written by William Douw Lighthall and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Master of Life: A Romance of the Five Nations This is a story of woods and waters and prehistoric scenes. Hiawatha was the founder of the famous League of the Five Nations, or Iroquois. (The "Hiawatha" of Longfellow is a different being.) The Iroquois were a town-building people. The view is here adopted, that, as between the five Iroquois tribes themselves, he was originally a Mohawk, who spent some years in Onondaga and afterwards returned to his own "nation." Field scholars now identify the Mohawks with the Hochelagans, who had been driven out from the Montreal country by Algonkins, assisted by Hurons of the West, shortly before the formation of the League. The description of their town, Hochelaga, by Jacques Cartier in 1535, and its subsequent disappearance, is one of the most fairy-like tales in history. The present book is an attempt to picture the strange ideas of the Red Man's mind, life, and melancholy. It is an aboriginal romance, without a white man in it. The Indian is here represented in the chivalrous and reverent side of his nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Mr. Shea says it was writ ten to lay more completely before the pub lie the importance of the Five Nations - or Iroquois - to the Colony of New York, as a barrier against the French and a means of controlling the West. There is no doubt that the book was written with a political motive, and it may have been necessary to teach the King and Council, Lords of Trade and other ruling powers, the real position, influence and power of the Iroquois Confed cracy. But Golden was too well informed a man not to perceive that the day would come when every scrap of authentic information in regard to the Indians would be valuable. He had access to sources of information by reason of his official position not usually open to writers, of which he made remarkable use.
