Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullianus, commonly referred to as Tertullian (c. 160 - c. 220 AD), was raised in Carthage. He was thought to be the son of a Roman centurion, a trained lawyer, and an ordained priest. These assertions rely on the accounts of Eusebius of Caesarea, Church History, and St. Jerome's De viris illustribus (On famous men). Tertullian is the first Christian author to produce an extensive corpus of Latin Christian literature. He also was a notable early Christian apologist and a polemicist against heresy. Tertullian has been called "the father of Latin Christianity"and "the founder of Western theology." Though conservative, he did originate and advance new theology to the early Church. He is perhaps most famous for being the oldest extant Latin writer to use the term Trinity (Latin trinitas),and giving the oldest extant formal exposition of a Trinitarian theology.[Other Latin formulations that first appear in his work are "three Persons, one Substance" as the Latin "tres Personae, una Substantia" . He wrote his trinitarian formula after becoming a Montanist; his ideas were at first rejected as heresy by the church at large, but later accepted as Christian orthodoxyScant reliable evidence exists to inform us about Tertullian's life. Most history about him comes from passing references in his own writings.

Download or read book Against Jovinianus written by St. Jerome and published by Dalcassian Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-12-07 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jovinianus, about whom little more is known than what is to be found in Jerome's treatise, published a Latin treatise outlining several opinions: That a virgin is no better, as such, than a wife in the sight of God. Abstinence from food is no better than a thankful partaking of food. A person baptized with the Spirit as well as with water cannot sin. All sins are equal. There is but one grade of punishment and one of reward in the future state. In addition to this, he held the birth of Jesus Christ to have been by a "true parturition," and was thus refuting the orthodoxy of the time, according to which, the infant Jesus passed through the walls of the womb as his Resurrection body afterwards did, out of the tomb or through closed doors.

Download or read book The New Testament Historical Enrichment Book written by Jay Still and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-11-18 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Jay Still had questions about information in the Bible for which no one seemed to have the answers. He began searching outside sources and offers a plethora of answers in The New Testament Historical Enrichment Book. Still expounds on what is found in the New Testaments and provides historical background to help understand more about the people, events, and history to answer a host of questions: What was Jesus' life like on earth? Outside of the New Testament writers, who else believed Jesus actually lived? Did Jesus have a family? What became of them? Paul proclaimed himself an apostle. Did others recognize him as an apostle? Who recognized his writings as authoritative? What became of the apostles? Did they disband and return to their former lives, or did they continue the work for which Jesus prepared them? The New Testament talks of King Herod before Jesus was born and well after Jesus died. How did he live so long? Why was Pilate, a governor, as powerful as Herod who was a king? Who wrote the New Testament? Why were their writings selected? What other writings were considered? Who did the early church see as the Antichrist? How did the early church see Paradise where Jesus went with the thief on the cross? What became of the nation of Israel? What became of the office of the High Priest? What became of the Temple? Drawing on writings of the early church fathers and historians closest to the time Jesus lived, The New Testament Historical Enrichment Book helps add to the knowledge base and provide a historical perspective of what is known about the New Testaments, its people, and its happenings.

This intermediate graded reader is designed to meet those needs. The reader is "intermediate" in the sense that it presumes the user will have already learned the basics of Greek grammar and syntax and has memorized Greek vocabulary words that appear frequently in the New Testament. The reader is "graded" in the sense that it moves from simpler translation work (Galatians) towards more advanced readings from the book of James, the Septuagint, and from one of the Church Fathers. In each reading lesson, the Greek text is given, followed by supplemental notes that offer help with vocabulary, challenging word forms, and syntax. Discussion questions are also included to foster group conversation and engagement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book ‘What’s God got to do with it’? is expansive and visionary in its scope; and, it examines issues like ‘creation’, sexuality, gender, population, war, money, and so on. It is part academic, journalistic, descriptive, and prescriptive, even if personal. Some chapters are short, while others are long. This book poses some very searching questions, and provides some startling, and revolutionary answers to these important religious problems using the full range of religious, psychological, linguistic, and scientific tools to do so. These questions, for example, are: Why are we here? Where are we going? Is there a God, or not? If there is a ‘good’ God, why is there suffering, and death? So this monograph, seeks to address these questions, and other deep ones about existence, and human behaviours. So I invite you to come along with me on this journey of discovery towards Genesis: New Beginnings.
