Book excerpt: The Torah is Judaism's most important text. It contains the first five books of the Hebrew Bible-the Tanakh-which are also the first five books of the Christian Bible. The Tanakh is essentially the same as what Christians call the Old Testament, with slight differences in the order and structure of the included books. The Torah begins with the creation of the world and ends with the death of Moses. The first full draft of the Torah is believed to have been completed in the 6th or 7th century B.C., and has been revised numerous times over subsequent centuries. Jewish tradition teaches that the Torah is the revelation of God, given to Moses, and written down by Moses. It is the document that contains all the rules by which the Jewish people structure their spiritual lives. The word torah means "to teach," and it can mean different things in different contexts. In its most common usage, the Torah refers to the Five Books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. But the word torah is also sometimes used to refer to the entire Hebrew Bible-the Tanakh, or Written Torah-and sometimes even the entire body of Jewish law and teachings. Traditionally, each synagogue has a copy of the Torah written on a scroll that is wound around two wooden poles. This is known as a Sefer Torah and it is handwritten by a sofer (scribe) who must copy the text perfectly. In modern printed form, as in this volume, the Torah is usually called a Chumash, which comes from the Hebrew word for the number five. This book, The Torah: The Five Books of Moses, is excerpted from a larger work in progress, The Holy Bible: King James Readers' Version. As you will see, it is formatted like an epic poem-which it is-and feels like you are reading the King James Bible-which you are-but more smoothly, and with more immediate understanding. It also contains details and names missing from the King James Version that turn up in other versions of the Bible. Needless to say, I hope it increases your enjoyment and comprehension of this keystone document, whose influence on Western civilization and culture is without equal. No education is complete without reading it. Twice.

Mann, born into a rabbinic family, educated at distinguished institutions, and seasoned by years of service as an Orthodox rabbi. In five books the author reveals his origins, shares the adventures of growing up, and takes stock of his adult years. As he tells his lifes story, he muses about his options: computer scientist or rabbi. He reasons that the former requires great labor and some luck to achieve respectability, but, he concludes, As a rabbi, I would begin my professional life on a high. I would be top banana, king of the mountain, master of my domain. I would enjoy immediate respect. Decisions made might be challenged periodically, but in the end, I would win out. God was on my side. Why start at the bottom, when I could start at the top? The decision was simple enough. Practicality ruled the day. From that pivotal moment, the direction of his life changes, bringing challenges and joys. The Five Books of [Abraham] Moses: An Autobiographical Narrative reveals the contoursthe bumps and the vistas alikeof the terrain through which the author journeys. If you appreciate the details of a well told story, the honesty of an individual who shares willingly, and the humor that arises to make the difficulties in life surmountable, then this autobiography will reward you for reading its story.

Book excerpt: Whether you are studying the Bible for the first time or you're simply curious about its history and contents, you will find everything you need in this "accessible, well-written handbook to Jewish belief as set forth in the Torah" (The Jerusalem Post). George Robinson, author of the acclaimed Essential Judaism, begins by recounting the various theories of the origins of the Torah and goes on to explain its importance as the core element in Jewish belief and practice. He discusses the basics of Jewish theology and Jewish history as they are derived from the Torah, and he outlines how the Dead Sea Scrolls and other archaeological discoveries have enhanced our understanding of the Bible. He introduces us to the vast literature of biblical commentary, chronicles the evolution of the Torah’s place in the synagogue service, offers an illuminating discussion of women and the Bible, and provides a study guide as a companion for individual or group Bible study. In the book’s centerpiece, Robinson summarizes all fifty-four portions that make up the Torah and gives us a brilliant distillation of two thousand years of biblical commentaries—from the rabbis of the Mishnah and the Talmud to medieval commentators such as Rashi, Maimonides, and ibn Ezra to contemporary scholars such as Nahum Sarna, Nechama Leibowitz, Robert Alter, and Everett Fox. This extraordinary volume—which includes a listing of the Torah reading cycles, a Bible time line, glossaries of terms and biblical commentators, and a bibliography—will stand as the essential sourcebook on the Torah for years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Exodus 7: My imagination takes me to Pharaoh's throne-room where his courtiers are pacing around and muttering, ""That Moses needs to go down! Those Hebrews need to be punished again!"" Only a small percentage of the Egyptian population grumbled against Moses; most of them were friendly with their Hebrew counterparts, and willingly shared their silver and gold with them as parting gifts. (My goodness, prosperity in a time when the world is falling apart ? imagine that!) Shows how out-of-touch with the grassroots that politicians can be. Then there's this ""Tweet"" that Moses sends to Pharaoh as a parting shot: ""All these your servants will come down to me and bow themselves before me, saying 'Go out, you and all the people who follow you, ' and after that, I will go out."" And he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger"" (Exodus 11:8). Sounds familiar? I guess people haven't changed that much in 5,000 years.

Book excerpt: The bestselling follow-up to Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist. Includes a reader's guide and an excerpt from Pitre's The Case for Jesus. In Jesus the Bridegroom, Brant Pitre once again taps into the wells of Jewish Scripture and tradition, and unlocks the secrets of what is arguably the most well-known symbol of the Christian faith: the cross of Christ. In this thrilling exploration, Pitre shows how the suffering and death of Jesus was far more than a tragic Roman execution. Instead, the Passion of Christ was the fulfillment of ancient Jewish prophecies of a wedding, when the God of the universe would wed himself to humankind in an everlasting nuptial covenant. To be sure, most Christians are familiar with the apostle Paul’s teaching that Christ is the ‘Bridegroom’ and the Church is the ‘Bride’. But what does this really mean? And what would ever possess Paul to compare the death of Christ to the love of a husband for his wife? If you would have been at the Crucifixion, with Jesus hanging there dying, is that how you would have described it? How could a first-century Jew like Paul, who knew how brutal Roman crucifixions were, have ever compared the execution of Jesus to a wedding? And why does he refer to this as the “great mystery” (Ephesians 5:32)? As Pitre shows, the key to unlocking this mystery can be found by going back to Jewish Scripture and tradition and seeing the entire history of salvation, from Mount Sinai to Mount Calvary, as a divine love story between Creator and creature, between God and Israel, between Christ and his bride—a story that comes to its climax on the wood of a Roman cross. In the pages of Jesus the Bridegroom, dozens of familiar passages in the Bible—the Exodus, the Song of Songs, the Wedding at Cana, the Woman at the Well, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, and even the Second Coming at the End of Time—are suddenly transformed before our eyes. Indeed, when seen in the light of Jewish Scripture and tradition, the life of Christ is nothing less than the greatest love story ever told.

Book excerpt: “A disarming, intelligent, and timely book” that re-examines religious history and scripture with a focus on the feminine experience (The New York Times). In the world that created the Bible, there were no female scholars and theologians, yet in recent decades, owing to such stunning discoveries as the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Nag Hammadi texts, as well as advances in historical understanding and the rise of feminism, a generation of scholars has found new ways to interpret the Scriptures and the societies that created them—exploring avenues traditionally ignored by male-dominated religious study. Surveying the new scholarship and the personalities of those who have created it, The Word According to Eve not only explores afresh the history of our religions but offers exciting new challenges to our sense of worship. “Provocative and lucid . . . an engaging book.” —The Boston Globe

Book excerpt: The Pentateuch (its Greek name, but also known as the Torah by the Hebrews) consists of the first five books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. From Adam and Eve in the Garden, to Noah's Ark, to Moses' parting of the Red Sea, to its conclusion with the death of Moses, the Pentateuch contains some of the most important and memorable stories in Western civilization. In this richly detailed work, which has become a standard in the field, renowned biblical scholar Joseph Blenkinsopp unravels (as Harold Bloom did in The Book of J) the radical scholarly opinions on just where these ancient and powerful stories come from, how they were formed, and what significance they have today. In the classroom, when professors cover these books of Moses, they turn to Dr. Blenkinsopp's classic for reliable, accessible discussions of all the important details.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Jean Louis Ska's Introduzione alla lettura del Pentateuco was first published in Italy, it was quickly hailed as the most attractive and usable introduction to the Pentateuch to appear in modern times. Because of its strengths, it was soon translated into French. The English translation published by Eisenbrauns has been completely reviewed and updated (including the bibliography) by Ska. Among the book's many strengths are its close attention to the ways in which modern cultural history has affected Pentateuchal interpretation, attention to providing the kinds of examples that are helpful to students, presentation of a good balance between the history of interpretation and the data of the text, and the clarity of Ska's writing. For both students and scholars, many consider this book the best contemporary introduction to the Pentateuch.
