Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fishes of Illinois Valuable collections have sometimes been obtained, especially from western Illinois, by arrangement with high-school teachers, who have fished the streams of their neighborhoods in accordance with our instructions, and in consideration Of our return Of a named series of specimens to their schools. Our field apparatus consisted mainly of seines of various size and mesh, from the smallest and finest minnow seines to those long enough and deep enough for use in our largest rivers. For collec tions from weedy ponds and from creeks, and especially from swift waters or from streams where a shore landing was difficult, we have depended largely on the so-called Baird seine, a close-meshed min now seine Oi medium length with a wide - mouthed, deep, conical bag of netting in its center. Trammel-nets have been very serviceable in waters through which a seine could not be drawn, especially in those encumbered by brush or filled with water-plants. Set - nets or pound-nets Of various size and mesh, both with and without wings. Have brought us much material, especially of the larger and more abundant species. For our knowledge of these, however, we have depended largely upon an inspection of fish markets and an exam imation of the catches of commercial fishermen, with whom we have, indeed, made frequent trips to their fishing grounds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Synoptic List of the Fishes Known to Occur Within Fifty Miles of Chicago Owing to the many changes being made in this region on account Of the growth of the city, the local fish fauna and its consequent changes are interesting. The present paper is intended to afford students of the local fish-fauna, in and about Chicago, a ready means for the identification of fishes which they may collect, and thus assist in the study of their distribution, breeding and feeding habits, etc. A considerable amount of study along these lines is necessary before one is able to prepare a complete account of the fishes of this region. In the following pages is given a list, together with keys and brief descriptions, of the fishes which inhabit the lakes, streams, and 1a goons in and near Chicago. The general range of each species is. Given, and a list of localities where each has been taken in the area in question. Many of the descriptions have been drawn directly from specimens taken within the area under discussion, and all have been verified by the junior author with local material, so far as available. In the preparation of this paper free use has been made of previous publications by various authors. Considerable assistance has been received from Dr. Shelford, Dr. Riddle, and their students from the University of Chicago, also from Mr. A. P. Ford (formerly of Berwyn, Illinois), chemist for the Crane Iron Works, Bridgeport, Conn. Most of the illustrations used in this work are by permission of its authors, taken from The Fishes of Illinois, by S. A. Forbes and R. E. Richardson; some are made from photographs of colored plates, the others from cuts kindly loaned by Dr. Forbes. A few illustrations are taken from U. S. Government publications. It is hoped that the present paper may stimulate the study of our local fishes and so be the forerunner of a much more complete account of them. The following notes and the accompanying figure are given to explain the terms used in the descriptions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The second part gives the descriptions of several new spe'cies and additional information on a few already known species of Myxosporidia Observed during this survey and also in the fishes which have been collected by Dr. D. H. Thompson, Zoologist of the Survey, from various parts of the state in connection with his work over a per iod Of several years. The author is indebted to Dr. Thompson for these materials placed at his disposal and for assistance during the month of field study. Thanks are also due to Mr. F. D. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Long-Term Illinois River Fish Population Monitoring Program: F-101-R Segments 6-10, Final Report to Be Submitted to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service During late August and September each year 1994-1998, we sampled 26 sites on the Illinois River Waterway and one site on Reach 26 of the Mississippi River by electrofishing to monitor fish communities. From 1994-1998, we collected a total of fish representing 62 species (plus five hybrids) from fourteen families during hours of sampling at 26 sites on the Illinois Waterway and a single site on the Mississippi River. Of these fishes, individuals were collected from the Illinois Waterway sites, and 643 were collected from Brickhouse Slough of the Mississippi River. The year with the greatest overall catch of fishes was 1995 (7941 individuals, cpuen 325 fish per hour) and the year with the lowest overall catch of fishes was 1994 (3421 individuals, cpuen 131 fish per hour). For all stations combined, the greatest number of species were collected in 1995 (48 species plus 3 hybrids) and the least were in 1997 (38 species plus 4 hybrids). The number of species collected from upper waten/vay reaches ranged from 12 for Starved Rock in 1996 to 24 for Marseilles in 1995. The number of species collected from middle river reaches ranged from 23 for La Grange Reach in 1997 to 34 for Peoria Reach in 1996. The number of species collected from the lower river (alton Reach) ranged from 18 in 1994 to 25 in 1995. The Peoria Reach consistently had highest species richness during all years (1994-1998) of sampling for this project. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Fishes of Massachusetts As one of the Commissioners on the Zoology of Massachusetts, in the year 1839, I prepared a Report on the Ichthyology of the State. From the brief time Occupied in its preparation, it was necessarily imperfect, and, not being accompanied by figures, was comparatively useless, except to scientific men. Since the appearance of that communication, much information has been obtained respecting several of the most common and valuable fishes, and quite a number of new species have been ascertained to exist in our waters. Having carefully re-described all the species, I trust the following paper will present an accurate history of the fishes of our State. Considering this as the completion of my former Report, I have kept in View the primary object of the commission, - to asoer tain the value of our Fauna in an economical point of View, rather than to prepare labored scientific descriptions. 1' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
