She follows with a discussion of the remarkable collection of psychoanalytic literature available at the Zentralbibliothek during Joyce's residence in Zurich, including an analysis of previously untranslated journal articles especially relevant to the Blooms and their marriage--articles that, because they relate to perversions, suggest a psychoanalytic base for Bloom's sexual oddities. Through close reading, the study traces textual parallels and verbal echoes from the psychoanalytic writings in A Portrait of the Artist and, to a much greater extent, in Ulysses. Kimball also gives close attention to the unique way in which Joyce makes use of allusions, often combining psychoanalytic traces with classical ones to add density to his work, thus strengthening her case for a textual connection between Joyce and Freud, two towering figures of the 20th century. Drawing from early psychoanalytic texts in a manner uniquely his own, Joyce has set up echoes in Ulysses that touch all the major characters of the novel. Many kinds of hitherto unrepresented or unrepresentable identity have entered into the ordinary surrounding stories through which children and adults find their bearings in the world, while others have become obsolete. Biographical narratives that would previously have seemed unthinkable or incredible—'a likely story!'—have acquired the straightforward plausibility of a likely story. This book takes two Freudian routes to think about some of the present entanglements of identity. First, it follows Freud in returning to Greek tragedies - Oedipus and others - which may now appear strikingly different in the light of today's issues of family and sexuality. And second, it re-examines Freud's own theories from these newer perspectives, drawing out different strands of his stories of how children develop and how people change (or don't). Both kinds of mythology, the classical and the theoretical, may now, in their difference, illuminate some of the forming stories of our contemporary world of serial families, multiple sexualities, and new reproductive technologies.

But this impulse to turn away from self-knowledge can, and in the interests of the individual's and society's happiness must, be overcome; for the help he has given towards such overcoming, a great debt of gratitude is owed to Freud. His work may be roughly described as the provision of new keys by which we can now unlock doors in the human personality hitherto impassable, through which doors we may pass into areas unguessed at formerly. By the use of the instruments he has forged, we shall in the future be able not only to prevent, to a very large extent, the creation of the neurotic and mentally diseased, but also to set the feet of the new generations on a more desirable path, leading to a destiny more splendid and satisfying than we yet dream of.The task of Freud has been a hard and laborious one, fraught with difficulty and faced with every variety of opposition. There is neither space nor opportunity here to speak of the history of the Psycho-Analytic movement, a history of twenty years' work and struggle.
