His obligations are specially great to Bengel, Wiesinger, and Professor Salmond of Aberdeen. From several of the less strictly critical expositions of the Epistle, also, he has in various ways and degrees received help, particularly from the classic work of Leighton, and from the Expository Lectures of Professor John Brown of Edinburgh, and Dr. John Lillie of Kingston, New York. In the discussion of passages susceptible of different interpretations, only views of the meaning which seemed to have at least a moderate degree of likelihood have'been dealt with in the Commentary, or indeed, as a rule, even mentioned, - the book being intended, not as a storehouse of curiosities or whimsical conceits, but as an aid to the practical study of Scripture. An endeavour has been made also to avoid loading the pages with needless lists of the names of scholars holding the various positions. Names have been mentioned only when they seemed to be in them selves to a certain extent arguments, or to afford something of interesting or helpful illustration. On questions con nected with the specialties of Hellenistic Greek, the New Testament Grammars of Winer and Alexander Buttmann are frequently referred to (the references being made to the English translations by Moulton and Thayer), occasionally also the excellent little work of Sheldon Green. For the grammar of classical Greek, Jelf and Donaldson have been used. There are no formal Dissertations or Excursus. Several of the discussions, in particular those on the exegesis of chap.' iii. 19, 20, and chap. Iv. 6, are considerably detailed; but the arrangement of the book - in which the text is printed, not over the expository notes, but at the beginning - permitted these to be kept in their place in the Commentary. But in neither is there a word that can be taken to militate against independent authorship. And the same remark applies to all the resemblances which exist between the two epistles in the exhortations to servants, wives, and husbands; in the commendations of humility, pity, courtesy; in the entreaties to the believers to gird up the loins of the mind and to lay aside all malice and hatred in those passages which speak of them as strangers and pilgrims, as called from darkness to light, as being a spiritual house, built upon Christ as the head corner stone. Of all these exhortations undoubted parallels are to be found but they are only evidence of the common character which would pervade all the teaching of the apostolic missionaries where the people addressed were the same, the times not far apart, and the dangers and temptations known alike to all the writers. Hence parallels to St. Peter may be found in St. James too, but they are no proof that the one Apostle (or, as some critics say, some one writing under his name) copied from the other. Some just complaint too, was fre quently the consequence of omitting the numeral marks, which should denote the subordination of heads, and this where some of them are inserted, as if on purpose to increase the perplexity. And it also very frequently results from the neglect of giving a proper view at first of the method proposed, and which was worst of all, in not a few places, from placing the number of the head, instead of the head itself. This, perhaps, was done with design in the first copy, to save the trouble of writing it over again; but it is extremely inconvenient to the reader, as it most naturally leads him to mistake the first sentence of the enlargement, for the head it is in tended to illustrate. These Bibles of the East and the West contained the First Epistle of Peter, but the other books dis cussed in this volume were omitted in either the one or the other. That meant that these books were somewhat slower than the other New Testament books in gaining canonical recognition in the general church. If the suggestion made by Carlstadt at the time of the Reformation had been adopted by the Protestant church and the books of the New Testament had been divided into three classes according to their degree of canonical authority, First Peter would have fallen into the second class and Hebrews, James, Second Peter, and Jude would have been assigned to the third class as among the books to be. Admitted last into the canon. It is into this more doubtful field that we enter in this book. We have attempted in this series to be thorough-going in our research and independent in our conclusions. We have tried to face all the facts and to be influenced only by these. We have tried to submit the facts in each case, believing that it was the right of the church, both preachers and laymen, to know them. We have felt that it was one duty Of the theologian to transmit to the rank and file of the church membership the results of the best and most recent theologi cal discussion and to put these into the most readable and interesting form which seemed to be possible. The reception granted to the preceding volumes of this series would seem to indicate that we have succeeded in our endeavor in this direction in some measure at least.
