Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opening months of the First World War were the golden sunset for the horsed regiments of the British army. Whether they were Lancers, Hussars or Dragoons, their names were redolent of glory and grandeur. Trained for shock tactics as well as scouting and reconnaissance, several times in 1914 they clashed dramatically with their German counterparts on the battlefields of France. Yet at the same time, the role of the cavalry was shifting inexorably away from these romantic charges, with trumpets, gleaming lances and swirling sabres. In the new warfare of the Twentieth Century, the true value of these regiments was as an intensively trained, highly mobile reserve. Despite their misgivings about the role, the Regular cavalry (latterly with Yeomanry alongside them) were also a highly effective force when fighting on foot. Able to arrive quickly at trouble spots, they were equally skilled with the rifle, and on more than one occasion in 1914 they were able to retrieve a critical situation.

Book excerpt: Of the 18 VCs awarded to the Royal Regiment of Artillery during the Great War, eight were won in the first three weeks, all for acts of gallantry carried out not only under enemy shellfire, but also under direct rifle and machine gun fire. The so-called Affair of Nery, an action fought on 1st September 1914, was one of these in which three VCs were awarded to L Battery, RHA, which, since then, has been known as Nery Battery in commemoration of that action. This story of the German Operations is based on General von Kluck s March on Paris, Poseck s German Cavalry in Belgium and France, the German Official Account and such Regimental Histories as were available. Use has also been made of the accounts of two of the German cavalry regiments involved - 18th Dragoons and 15th Hussars. The British positions are taken from Vol I of our Official History, from the account of The Fight at Nery, by the author and published in the RUSI Journal of May 1919, and from General (then Lt Col commanding 11H) T.T.Pitman s article on the action in the Cavalry Journal of April 1920. Part I in the book, headed "The Pursuit , describes the actions of the 4th German Cavalry Division, part of II Cavalry Corps, in the German advance through Belgium into France following up the BEF retreating from Mons till reaching the outskirts of Nery on 31st August where the British 1st Cavalry Brigade - 2 DG (Queen s Bays), 5 DG and 11H with L Battery RHA - lay, under orders to be ready to resume their march at 0430 hours next day,1September. That morning there was thick mist and neither side was aware of the presence of the other till they bumped into each other. Part II, "the Chance Encounter describes how the battle developed, a battle in which German casualties totalled 162, the British 133 of which the heaviest loss was incurred by L Battery, 23 killed 31 wounded, which also lost 150 of its 228 horses. Part III describes the withdrawal of the German 4th Cavalry Division and offers comments on the result of the battle. Appendices give the German First Army and the 4th Cavalry division orders of battle, and a table with casualty details on both sides. Nery today is much as it was those ninety years ago; the British dead are buried in the French National Cemetery at Verberie, nine and a half miles SW of Compiegne where the Armistice would be signed just over four years later.

Book excerpt: Frederic Coleman returns to the front with the British Army in 1915 after his adventures in 1914, as recounted in his first reminiscences “From Mons to Ypres with General French”. Once again attached to the British cavalry, grand movements had ceased and the positional war of attrition, artillery and trenches would dominate from then to the end of the war. 1915 would see much hard fighting and the cavalry divisions would often be pressed into service in the trenches alongside the infantry. The early months of 1915 were a period of relative quiet, which allowed the author to tour and recount the devastated scenery of Ypres, St. Eloi and all along the line; he also records the effects of war on the civilian French and Belgian populations as he tours along in his car. However, as the year goes on, the Spring would see the second battle of Ypres and the advent of the use of poison gas. Hard pressed all along the line, Coleman paints vivid picture of the desperate measures undertaken by the British to hold on at all costs. An excellent First World War One memoir. Author — Frederic Abernethy Coleman 1876-1931 Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in London: S. Low, Marston & co., limited, 1916. Original Page Count – xvi and 302 pages. Illustrations – numerous illustrations throughout.

Book excerpt: This book fills a significant gap in the historiography of British military thought, doctrine and practice for the First World War (1914-18) and the generation beforehand, including the Boer War (1899-1902). It investigates a major doctrinal controversy: what the role and tactics of horsed soldiers were to be in the face of increasing firepower and demands placed upon them by the expansion of mass armies. Contrary to widely held modern belief, the doctrine developed proved quite successful in dealing with the conditions that they faced on the battlefield.

Book excerpt: The War Diaries for the Great War, held under WO95, represent one of the most popular record collections held at the National Archives, Kew, London. For researchers and family historians, the War Diaries contain a wealth of information of far greater interest than the army could ever have predicted. They provide unrivalled insight into daily events on the front line and are packed with fascinating detail. They contain no modern editing, opinions or poorly judged comments, just the war day by day, written by the men who fought this 'War to end all Wars. They are without question, the most important source of information available on the war on the Western Front. Full colour facsimile of each page with specially created chronological index. What is a War Diary? The headquarters of each unit and formation of the British Army in the field was ordered to maintain a record of its location, movements and activities. For the most part, these details were recorded on a standard army form headed 'War diary or intelligence summary'. What details are given? Details given vary greatly, depending on the nature of the unit, what it was doing and, to some extent, the style of the man writing it. The entries vary from very simple and repetitive statements like 'Training' up to many pages of description when a unit was in battle. Production of the diary was the responsibility of the Adjutant of the headquarters concerned. Is there any other information or documents with the diaries? Some diaries have other documentation attached, such as maps, operational orders and after-action reports.

Book excerpt: In Volume VII it is shown how superior the British Cavalry was to those of the French and German in the first five months of the Great War. A major factor in their success was their skill in dismounted firepower and their capacity to move speedily from one point to another.
