Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Stone: And Other Stories The eyes of Abel Harris were riveted upon a diamond. There was nothing singular in this, for Mr. Harris had been a dealer in diamonds for many years, and was the owner of a larger number of costly gems than any other man or woman in the city of New York. And yet there was something singular in the dealer's study, for his attention was far more taken up with the setting of the diamond than with the jewel itself. Indeed so intent was he upon the mere environment of the gem that he could not have told whether the diamond was carbon or paste. Stranger still in a man in whose veins ran a crystal stream of the Brahmin blood of New England, he did not care. The solution of all these riddles will be clear to the most prosaic mind when told that the setting of the jewel was the neck of the well known danseuse. Mile. Judith. Its introducer ventured to hope that it would give many readers a different impression of the witty and delightful author.' Nobody with his eyes open can doubt that this wish is being abundantly realised. The revulsion of feeling' for which Wilde's friends have laboured with such tender assiduity is actually occurring, and De Profundis has helped it on mightily. Oscar Wilde is nowadays to figure among the 'im proving' authors whom he affected so to despise! Roughly speaking we are invited to say of him, 'thy sins which were many are forgiven thee because at the end thou madest a beautiful, tearful book for the Sunday Schools.' The criticism of the time, which is always a few lengths ahead of the public sentiment or prejudice, commends us even to a more perilous and preposterous complaisance. Is it not time that somebody with a tri e of power over printer's ink spoke out? I think it is, and, accordingly, I seem to have said my say. I shall be told to remember that Wilde was a man of genius, and that he is dead. In view of what is happening under our noses, I refuse to forget that he is fearfully alive, that his genius belonged essentially to the stews, and that he spent his last literary strength on the deliberate production of a work which is disgraceful to humanity. The green of the emerald is not approached by any other stone, though there are some remarkable imitations made. The doublet imitations Of this stone are not good; the color is dark and murky. Because we agreed, when this book was conceived, that there was need of an honest story about prostitution. All too often the problem of prostitution is either referred to in off-color stories or ignored altogether. It is our hope that this book may help bring the matter out in the Open where adult Americans with a concern for the moral and social welfare of the community can discuss it intelligently. The first having a form of Godliness, but denying the power thereof; ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. The second calling themselves Spiritual, have sanctioned the most absurd extremes; some of which will be shown in this work. This is not calculated to form a new sect, but to help elevate those already formed, to take the same relation to churches, as colleges to schools, a universal reforming principle. The stones of the walls have been chipped and dressed with chisels and hammers the marble of the chimney-pieces has been smoothed and polished; the slates have been split into thin plates. But some of these building mate rials have undergone much greater changes. The bricks, for instance, were originally soft clay which has been hardened by being baked in ovens. The mortar by which the stones or bricks of the walls are held together. Has been obtained by burning limestone in kilns. The iron used in the house was first of all in the state of a dull red or brown stone, which had to be roasted and melted before the clear bright metal came out of it. I 3. But although these various stones differ so much from each other, they agree in one point - they come from underneath the surface of the ground. If you could trace back each of them to the place from which it came you would find that the freestone and limestone were taken out of quarries, perhaps not very far away, that the slates were cut out of the side of some hill, probably in Wales, that the marble was quarried out of some distant moun tain, possibly in Italy, that the coal was dug out of mines, sunk deep into the earth in some part of Bri tain, and that the bricks were made from clay dug out of pits on some low ground in your neighbourhood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stones: For Building and Decoration Since the appearance Of the first edition of this work there has been a very notable increase in the output of building stone from American quarries. How great this has been cannot be stated, unfortunately, since statistics are not available, but it is probable that the total annual output, as well as the amount Of capital invested, have both more than doubled. This is due not merely to the opening up Of new quarries, but also to an enlargement Of those already in existence and a very great increase in their equipments. Where but a few years ago hand labor or at best a few steam drills were chiefly relied upon, one now finds numerous and expensive machines in the form Of steam-drills and channellers, while at the yards are pneumatic tools, planers, . Lathes, polishers, saws, and grinding beds representing Often an outlay Of many thousands Of dollars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lost Lenore: Or the Adventures of a Rolling Stone A "Rolling Stone" came tumbling across my track. There was a crystalline sparkle about it, proclaiming it no common pebble. I took it up, and submitted it to examination. It proved to be a diamond! A diamond of the "first water," slightly incrusted with quartz, needing but the chisel of the lapidary to lay bare its brilliant beauties to the gaze of an admiring world. Charles Beach is the proprietor of this precious gem; I but the artizan intrusted with its setting. If my share of the task has been attended with labour, it has been a "labour of love;" for which I shall feel amply rewarded in listening to the congratulations which are due - and will certainly be given - to the lucky owner of the "Rolling Stone," the finder of "Lost Lenore."
