Book excerpt: 'EXCELLENT WRITING AND RESEARCH' - RUTH RENDELLThe Crime Museum of New Scotland Yard - invariably known as 'the Black Museum' - houses a remarkable collection of exhibits, photographs and documents connected with some of the most notorious crimes in this country's history. Although the museum is closed to the general public, Gordon Honeycombe was granted privileged access to its classified records, and his book reveals the stories behind 21 murders committed in Britain between 1835 and 1985.The author's painstaking research, which reaches beyond the Black Museum to other archives, as well as contemporary newspaper and similar reports, allows him to give searching accounts of the murders and manslaughter committed by such infamous characters as William Palmer, Charles Peace, Donald Nielson (the 'Black Panther'), the serial killer Dennis Nilsen, and Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in Britain. Here too are John Lee, the Man They Could Not Hang, George Chapman, a London publican who poisoned his wives, and the murder by IRA bomb of four soldiers of the Household Cavalry in London's Hyde Park, in a work that provides a fascinating, if uncompromising, insight into the minds and methods of those who practise murder. The well-known writer and former ITN newscaster Gordon Honeycombe is also the author of Murders of the Black Museum: 1875-1975 (John Blake Publishing, 2009).

Book excerpt: Isaac Cavin, of Ligonier, Pennsylvania, traveled to Indiana in 1830. He returned home and married Elizabeth Marker in 1834, and they traveled together to northern Indiana. In May 1835, he planned a new town and named it Ligonier. He built his home a few miles north of town and lived there for 52 years. The next big players were two German Jewish peddlers, Solomon Mier and Frederick William Straus, who traveled to the United States and settled in Indiana. After training with their uncle, they moved to Ligonier around 1854 because they were told the railroad would be coming to Ligonier and that it might be a good place to start up a business. The suggestion led to some wonderful times for Ligonier. Straus developed one of his businesses into the largest farm brokerage firm in the United States, and Mier developed one of his businesses into one of the largest farmland dealers in the Midwest. Images of America: Ligonier explores one of the most unusual small towns in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The landscape of the Calumet, an area that sits astride the Indiana-Illinois state line at the southern end of Lake Michigan was shaped by the glaciers that withdrew toward the end of the last ice age--about 45,000 years ago. In the years since, many natural forces, including wind, running water, and the waves of Lake Michigan, have continued to shape the land. The lake's modern and ancient shorelines have served as Indian trails, stagecoach routes, highways, and sites that have evolved into many of the cities, towns, and villages of the Calumet area. People have also left their mark on the landscape: Indians built mounds; farmers filled in wetlands; governments commissioned ditches and canals to drain marshes and change the direction of rivers; sand was hauled from where it was plentiful to where it was needed for urban and industrial growth. These thousands of years of weather and movements of peoples have given the Calumet region its distinct climate and appeal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 165 years, Marietta has played an important role in both the government and growth of the state of Georgia. Established as the seat of Cobb County in 1834, Marietta has grown from a celebrated resort town into a thriving, prosperous community. Unlike other communities where rapid development and huge increases in population diminish the city's original character, Marietta has retained its unique identity as a small southern town. Included in this volume of more than 200 vintage photographs, drawings, and maps are accounts of Marietta's war-time experiences, the early pioneers in education and health care, and the industries such as Lockheed that altered the course of the city's history. Divided into six distinct time periods, from the birth of the city to the fast-paced days of the late twentieth century, Marietta: 1833-2000 is a scrapbook of memories for longtime residents and a tool for newcomers who want to learn more about the area. Homes, churches, local businesses, and notable residents are all featured within these pages, and offer a glimpse of what Marietta was like in days gone by.
