Book excerpt: On behalf of the PROFES Organizing Committee we are proud to present the proce- th ings of the 11 International Conference on Product-Focused Software Process Improvement (PROFES 2010), held in Limerick, Ireland. Since the first conference in 1999 the conference has established its place in the software engineering community as a respected conference that brings together participants from academia and industry. The roots of PROFES are in professional software process improvement motivated by product and service quality needs. The conference addresses both the solutions found in practice as well as relevant research results from academia. To ensure that PROFES retains its high quality and focus on the most relevant research issues, the conference has actively maintained close collaboration with industry and subsequently widened its scope to the research areas of collaborative and agile software devel- ment. The main themes of this year’s conference were “Agile and Lean Processes” and “Engineering Service-Oriented Systems. ” These two main themes enabled us to cover the contemporary software devel- ment demands and trends in a comprehensive manner and to tackle the most important current challenges identified by the software industry and software research com- nity––namely, the shift of focus from "products" to "services. ” The technical program featured invited talks, research papers, and experience reports on the most relevant topics related to processes for developing software-intensive services and products. In addition, a number of workshops and tutorials were hosted.

Book excerpt: Bubbles give novelty and distinctiveness to many food and drink products including the most important and interesting ones such as bread, beer, ice cream, whipped cream, soufflés and champagne. Understanding the creation and control of bubbles in food products is key to the success of the domestic chef or the industrial food manufacturer. This new volume presents the proceedings of the conference Bubbles in Food 2: Novelty, Health and Luxury. This book is fully updated and expanded from the original Bubbles in Food book published in 1999. This new title brings together up-to-date information on the latest developments in this fast moving area. Bubbles in Food 2 includes novel experimental techniques for measuring and quantifying the aerated structure of foods (e.g. ultrasonics, MRI imaging, X-ray tomography, microscopy, rheology, image analysis), and novel analytical approaches for interpreting aerated food properties and behavior. These techniques and approaches provide stimulus for new product development or for enhancing the understanding of the manufacture of existing products, leading to enhanced quality and greater product differentiation. Bubbles in Food 2: Novelty, Health and Luxury aims to enhance the appreciation of aerated foods and to provide stimulation and cross fertilisation of ideas for the exploitation of bubbles as a novel and versatile food ingredient.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ISOTT 2001 local organizing committee was pleased to welcome over 140 delegates from around the world to the 29th annual general meeting of the International Society for Oxygen Transport to Tissue. The meeting was held in historic Philadelphia, USA, on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania from August 11 to 15, 2001. In the tradition of ISOTT, the conference was a total immersion experience. Attendees were encouraged to eat together and spend their evenings relaxing together in a style that maximized exchange of ideas and interactions of younger scientists with their more senior colleagues. Delegates participated in a total of 122 presentations including poster displays, selected oral presentations, seminars by invited speakers and a round table discussion. In choosing invited speakers and oral presenters, special emphasis was placed on methods for oxygen measurement in living tissue and application of these technologies to understanding physiological and biochemical basis for pathology related to tissue oxygenation. All of the manuscripts contained in this volume underwent both an editorial and scientific review, and only those meeting both criteria have been published. However, while all efforts have been made to eliminate editorial errors, some have undoubtedly been overlooked, for which the editors apologize.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Pavlov, physiologists have explained homeostasis—the regulation of bodily functions—as the action of fixed negative feedback networks within individual organ systems. However, these standard explanations largely ignore the mechanisms of conditioning and learning. Drawing on the work of Western, East European, and Russian physiologists, Barry R. Dworkin challenges traditional concepts and argues that learning mechanisms of the nervous system are essential to regulation. Dworkin shows how, through experience, learning mechanisms determine dynamic stability and the long-term regulation of heart rate, blood pressure, glucose, electrolytes, and temperature. He argues that "hard wired" mechanisms do not adequately account for the speed and accuracy of physiological adjustments, and supports his contention with detailed analyses and mathematical models of how conditioned and unconditioned reflexes interact. Dworkin reviews a wealth of research on interoceptive conditioning, conditioned drug responses, and visceral adjustment. Combining physiological and behavioral data with mathematical analysis and computer models, he synthesizes the work of Pavlov and W. B. Cannon in a quantitative theory of physiological regulation that will interest researchers and theorists in medicine, physiology, neuroscience, and biopsychology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains refereed manuscripts prepared from presentations made at the 2ih annual meeting of the International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue (ISOTT). The meeting was held in Hanover, NH, USA, at Dartmouth Medical School, the 3rd oldest medical school in the USA. ISOTT attempts to produce high quality pUblications on cutting edge topics relating to oxygen in living systerns. The goal is to allow contributors to contribute original data, as with a main-stream journal article, but also to voice individual opinions and ideas in a more relaxed scientific forum. The meeting brought together an international group of scientists who share a common interest in the measurement and role of oxygen in living systems. The organizers of ISOTT99 made a special effort to bring together people from industry, medicine, and basic sciences in order to improve the links in the chain of discovery through to application. As a result, this volume contains publications on a range of subjects. There are contributions from companies on modifiers of oxygen carrying capacity (allosteric modifiers of hemoglobin and infusible oxygen carriers or blood substitutes); technical reports on oxygen measurement devices including advances in near-infrared spectroscopy and imaging, oxygen electrodes, magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging, and fluorescence based measurements. There are medically related sections on modifying and measuring tumor oxygenation in order to improve therapy, assessment and interpretation of oxygenation in the central nervous system, and general issues relating oxygen to pathological conditions.
