Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old Nero, the biggest grizzly of the Chilcotin; Siberia, the too-friendly black wolf; and Lucky, the not-so-lucky guide are some of the characters in Chilco Choate's latest collection of yarns and pithy observations from BC's backcountry. Changing some names to protect the guilty, he skewers the once-a-year hunters who, stricken by "buck fever," blast away like they're at a target range then wonder why their guide won't take them out after big game. This long-time hunter also reveals how he's maybe softening with age, enjoying time in the bush as much with a camera as with a gun and sometimes cheering on the prey instead of the predator. There are tried-and-true packing tips for readers planning their own expedition to the backcountry, a discussion of fire power, and culinary ideas sure to whet the appetite of a trail-weary traveller, as well as a few yarns about memorable bush-camp meals that maybe weren't quite so tasty. There are also close encounters with wolves and cougars, and fascinating details on the lives and behaviour of some of BC's most revered critters. For a change of pace, Chilco describes a winter he spent away from his beloved Chilcotin, feeding herds of elk in the East Kootenay. This gives him a chance to examine the resource-use plans too often dictated by ranchers and foresters who turn a blind eye to conservation and the rights of the wildlife that was on the range first. Chilco Choate first came to the Chilcotin in 1952 to try cowboying. Enticed by the lure of the great plateau, he was soon leading both seasoned hunters and hesitant dudes through the back country by day and spinning campfire stories by night. Chilco's previous book for Heritage House, Born for the Wild Country, tells of his early years, hunting and playing hooky along the Nicomekl River near White Rock, BC. In Unfriendly Neighbours, his first book, he describes his volatile relationship with the Gang Ranch.

Book excerpt: “My name is Sam George. In spite of everything that happened to me, by the grace of the Creator, I have lived to be an Elder.” Set in the Vancouver area in the late 1940s and through to the present day, this candid account follows Sam from his idyllic childhood growing up on the Eslhá7an (Mission) reserve to the confines of St. Paul’s Indian Residential School and then into a life of addiction and incarceration. But an ember of Sam’s spirit always burned within him, and even in the darkest of places he retained his humour and dignity until he found the strength to face his past. The Fire Still Burns is an unflinching look at the horrors of a childhood spent trapped within the Indian Residential School system and the long-term effects on survivors. It illustrates the healing power of one’s culture and the resilience that allows an individual to rebuild a life and a future.

Book excerpt: National Book Award–winner Timothy Egan turns his historian's eye to the largest-ever forest fire in America and offers an epic, cautionary tale for our time. On the afternoon of August 20, 1910, a battering ram of wind moved through the drought-stricken national forests of Washington, Idaho, and Montana, whipping the hundreds of small blazes burning across the forest floor into a roaring inferno that jumped from treetop to ridge as it raged, destroying towns and timber in the blink of an eye. Forest rangers had assembled nearly ten thousand men to fight the fires, but no living person had seen anything like those flames, and neither the rangers nor anyone else knew how to subdue them. Egan recreates the struggles of the overmatched rangers against the implacable fire with unstoppable dramatic force, and the larger story of outsized president Teddy Roosevelt and his chief forester, Gifford Pinchot, that follows is equally resonant. Pioneering the notion of conservation, Roosevelt and Pinchot did nothing less than create the idea of public land as our national treasure, owned by every citizen. Even as TR's national forests were smoldering they were saved: The heroism shown by his rangers turned public opinion permanently in favor of the forests, though it changed the mission of the forest service in ways we can still witness today. This e-book includes a sample chapter of SHORT NIGHTS OF THE SHADOW CATCHER.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terry Allen Moe came as pastor to Redeemer Lutheran, a traditional, working-class congregation in a poorer, mixed-race neighborhood in Portland, Oregon, in 1981. Five US presidents, six Portland mayors, and four Lutheran bishops later, Redeemer had been transformed into an innovative, spiritual-not-religious, member-based nonprofit called Leaven Community, and a new ELCA congregation--Salt and Light Lutheran--nested in the midst of Leaven. This is the story of how an intertwining of spirituality and organizing transformed a pastor and congregation. Using the metaphor of paying attention to the voice of God in the burning bush (Exodus 3), Moe describes how he and the congregation turned to the burning bush of deepened spirituality coupled with hard-nosed organizing embodied in the IAF network. The process was not easy or smooth, but the pastor and people changed, and together they impacted the larger Portland community. This is the story of listening, discerning, acting, and evaluating to address the upstream causes of pressing issues and of identifying and lifting up the public dimensions of people's pain. This is the story of prayer circles that addressed societal challenges contributing to people's private struggles. This is the story of unearthing and confronting the impacts of political decisions, overcoming the mentality that "church and politics don't mix." Sunday worship shifted to include the stories of addiction, job loss, rising energy costs, and ecological grieving from the members and their neighbors. This book demonstrates how the power of spiritual discernment and community organizing can transform a community of faith. It's timely inspiration for congregations struggling to find their way out of decline and the immobilization caused by fear and lack of creative leadership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In celebration of the 45th anniversary of The Dark Side of the Moon, Bill Kopp explores the ingenuity with which Pink Floyd rebranded itself following the 1968 departure of Syd Barrett. Not only did the band survive Barrett’s departure, but it went on to release landmark albums that continue to influence generations of musicians and fans. Reinventing Pink Floyd follows the path taken by the remaining band members to establish a musical identity, develop a songwriting style, and create a new template for the manner in which albums are made and even enjoyed by listeners. As veteran music journalist Bill Kopp illustrates, that path was filled with failed experiments, creative blind alleys, one-off musical excursions, abortive collaborations, general restlessness, and—most importantly—a dedicated search for a distinctive musical personality. This exciting guide to the works of 1968 through 1973 highlights key innovations and musical breakthroughs of lasting influence. Kopp places Pink Floyd in its historical, cultural, and musical contexts while celebrating the test of fire that took the band from the brink of demise to enduring superstardom.

These few wild stanzas are the etchings of her soul tattooed upon her flesh. Magic through lead and ink. May these words glitter before you like a comet across the night sky.

Book excerpt: In 2009, as the Black Saturday wildfires swept through the state of Victoria, Australia, writer and historian Robert Kenny defended his home in Redesdale. His fire plan was sound and he was prepared. But, the reality of the fire was more ferocious and more unpredictable than he could have imagined. By the end of the day, Kenny's house and the life contained within were gone. The years that followed were marked by grieving, recovering, and eventually rebuilding - a process starkly framed by the choice between remembering and forgetting. This resulting book is a riveting story of personal loss, woven with intellectual and historical investigations of: fire in the Australian landscape; mythologies of fire; and ideas of loss, home, and community. Offering something of value for the victims of wildfires, this personal account is stimulating writing, edged with beauty, grief, and hope. *** ". . . a tapestry of personal testimony, historical meditation and mythological reflection that is brilliant, moving and powerful." - Tom Griffiths, author of Forests of AshÃ?Â?Ã?Â?Ã?Â?Ã?Â?
