The wide influence exerted by the papacy on the political, social, and economic life of the middle ages gives to the study of the papal financial system a peculiar importance. Drawing its revenues from the whole Roman Catholic world, the relations of the Holy See with the sovereigns and peoples of Europe were affected in no small degree by its fiscal policy. In such well-known episodes of papal history as the struggle between Boniface VIII. and Philip the Fair, typical of the long contest between the mediaeval ideal and the reality of the growing national monarchy, the part played by finance became prominent. But on many less dramatic occasions its influence has been no less potent. In its more purely economic aspects p DEGREESpal finance is equally deserving of attention. The papacy not only organized one of the earliest and best of the mediaeval financial systems, but by means of its operations influenced profoundly the general economic development of Europe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Till now history has neglected the utterly radical nature of Luther's thought. In bringing together the political, theological, conceptual and cultural dimensions of Luther's work, Montover brings his readers to an awareness of their truly radical nature. Luther's understanding of the universal priesthood of believers was not simply another evangelical concept that dealt only with the office of ministry. In serving as a means for reordering the concepts of temporal authority and the temporal order it challenged the cosmological foundations of the political structure of his day. A compelling work that can only serve to revive the study of this monumental figure of theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Portugal was one of the first European states with stable borders, the process of the making of a Portuguese fiscal state still remains to be studied in detail. This volume brings together studies on the development of the Portuguese fiscal state within a comparative perspective in relation to other kingdoms across Europe, such as Castile and Aragon, England, Tuscany, the Papal States, Holland and France, in order to bring Portugal into the broader and comparative international debate about the development of the fiscal state. As a very distinctive case, Portugal remains understudied and underrepresented in the broader literature on the development of fiscal states. There are relatively few studies on the building of a fiscal state in Portugal that are accessible to an international audience. This book will make a fundamental contribution to this field, which is still full of untapped potential. It will combine the latest theory and comparative context with a detailed reconstruction of Portuguese state finance, taking a longer chronological frame that follows its development from the medieval through to the early modern period. It will also make the latest research from Portuguese scholars available to a wider, international audience, and will be of particular interest to researchers and students of financial and economic history.
