Book Synopsis The Next Age of Uncertainty by : Stephen Poloz
Download or read book The Next Age of Uncertainty written by Stephen Poloz and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2024-02-27 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2022 SHAUGHNESSY COHEN PRIZE FOR POLITICAL WRITING • SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2022 DONNER PRIZE “The Next Age of Uncertainty combines invaluable historical insights with provocative reflections on the economy of the future—a must read.” —Thomas d’Aquino C.M., LL.D., founding CEO of the Business Council of Canada, and author of Private Power Public Purpose From the former Governor of the Bank of Canada, a far-seeing guide to the powerful economic forces that will shape the decades ahead. The economic ground is shifting beneath our feet. The world is becoming more volatile, and people are understandably worried about their financial futures. In this urgent and accessible guide to the crises and opportunities that lie ahead, economist and former Governor of the Bank of Canada Stephen Poloz maps out the powerful tectonic forces that are shaping our future and the ideas that will allow us to master them. These forces include an aging workforce, mounting debt, and rising income inequality. Technological advances, too, are adding to the pressure, putting people out of work, and climate change is forcing a transition to a lower-carbon economy. It is no surprise that people are feeling uncertain. The implications of these tectonic tensions will cascade throughout every dimension of our lives—the job market, the housing market, the investment climate, as well as government and central bank policy, and the role of the corporation within society. The pandemic has added momentum to many of them. Poloz skillfully argues that past crises, from the Victorian Depression in the late 1800s to the more recent downturn in 2008, give a hint of what is in store for us in the decades ahead. Unlike the purely destructive power of earthquakes, the upheaval that is sure to come in the decades ahead will offer unexpected opportunities for renewal and growth. Filled with takeaways for employers, investors, and policymakers, as well as families discussing jobs and mortgage renewals around the kitchen table, The Next Age of Uncertainty is an indispensable guide for those navigating the fault lines of the risky world ahead.

Book Synopsis Re-Thinking Men by : Anthony Synnott
Download or read book Re-Thinking Men written by Anthony Synnott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much writing on men in the field of gender studies tends to focus unduly, almost exclusively, on portraying men as villains and women as victims in a moral bi-polar paradigm. Re-Thinking Men reverses the proclivity which ignores not only the positive contributions of men to society, but also the male victims of life including the homeless, the incarcerated, the victims of homicide, suicide, accidents, war and the draft, and sexism, as well as those affected by the failures of the health, education, political and justice systems. Proceeding from a radically different perspective in seeking a more positive, balanced and inclusive view of men (and women), this book presents three contrasting paradigms of men as Heroes, Villains and Victims. With the development of a comparative and revised gender perspective drawing on US, Canadian and UK sources, this book will be of interest to scholars across a range of social sciences.

Book Synopsis Hierarchy, Information and Power by : Hongmian Gong
Download or read book Hierarchy, Information and Power written by Hongmian Gong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of selected papers presented in the 2012 annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers in New York honoring James O. Wheeler (1938-2010). The eight papers are informed and inspired by James O. Wheeler's many contributions to urban geography, particularly in the areas of urban hierarchy, information flows, cities in the telecommunications age, and cities as corporate command and control centers. They adopt and extend Jim Wheeler’s corporate and/or hierarchical approaches to discuss institutional investment in the U.S., corporate interlocking directorates and fast-growing firms in Canada, corporate intangible assets in South Korea, urban development in Beijing and Macau, and social and cultural diversity of global cities such as New York. Although these two approaches are not the fanciest ones in today's urban geography, they are essential to the understanding of how urban areas are connected and what drives this interconnectedness in this age of globalization. This book was previously published as a special issue of Urban Geography.
Download or read book Relentless Change written by Joe Martin and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-09-19 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Casebooks in business history are designed to instruct students in classrooms and boardrooms about the evolution of business management. The first casebook for the study of business history in a Canadian context, Joseph E. Martin's text will help students, both in the classroom and the boardroom, understand the Canadian economy and guide them in making sound decisions and contributing to a healthy, growing economy. Thirteen original case studies from the mid-nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries deal with different industry sectors as well as individual corporations and managers. Overviews provide context by examining major public policy decisions and key developments in the financial system that have affected business practices. Martin also presents eight original tables that trace the evolution of the 60 largest Canadian corporations between 1905 and 2005. Relentless Change is an invaluable resource for instructors and business students and clearly demonstrates how businesses are affected by the interaction of individual decisions, policy changes, and market trends.
Book Synopsis International Business by : Simon Collinson
Download or read book International Business written by Simon Collinson and published by Pearson UK. This book was released on 2020 with total page 1271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We have continued to evolve the structure and content of this textbook in step with the rapidly changing world of international business. This includes completely revising several key chapters, including Chapter 6, on International Trade. This is entirely updated and includes new case studies covering both the trade-war between the US and China and the complex Brexit process. These and other real-world developments have made a wide range of stakeholders much more aware of the significance of global trade interdependencies than in the past. Chapter 16 on the European Union is also entirely updated to take account of Brexit and a range of new socio-political and economic events in Europe. Chapter 11 ('MNEs as Responsible Stakeholders') has been removed, making this edition more consolidated, with 20 rather than 21 chapters. In place of Chapter 11 we have inserted new sections, frameworks and case studies on responsible business throughout the book as a fundamental dimension of international businesstheory and practice across all the other chapters. New case studies, such as 'Businesses and NGOs working together on climate change' in Chapter 4, provideadditional material on this topic. Chapter 14, on 'Political risk and negotiation strategy' also features new case studies on the 'US-Venezuela oil dispute' and 'Huaweiaccused of spying'"
Book Synopsis Escape from the Staple Trap by : Paul Kellogg
Download or read book Escape from the Staple Trap written by Paul Kellogg and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From fur and fish to oil and minerals, Canadian development has often been understood through its relationship to export staples. This understanding, argues Paul Kellogg, has led many political economists to assume that Canadian economic development has followed a path similar to those of staple-exporting economies in the Global South, ignoring a more fundamental fact: as an advanced capitalist economy, Canada sits in the core of the world system, not on the periphery or semi-periphery. In Escape from the Staple Trap, Kellogg challenges statistical and historical analyses that present Canada as weak and disempowered, lacking sovereignty and economic independence. A powerful critique of the dominant trend in Canadian political economy since the 1970s, Escape from the Staple Trap offers an important new framework for understanding the distinctive features of Canadian political economy.

Book Synopsis Gender Equality and Policy Implementation in the Corporate World by : Isabelle Engeli
Download or read book Gender Equality and Policy Implementation in the Corporate World written by Isabelle Engeli and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender Equality and Policy Implementation in the Corporate World takes a unique approach to the issue of gender equality in corporations in the 21st century. It examines the implementation of specific policies that seek to promote women's presence on corporate boards in 15 democracies in Western and Central Eastern Europe, North America, and Australasia through the lens of the Gender Equality Policy in Practice Approach. The thirteen empirically rich country chapters by leading country experts and two separate comparative chapter answer core questions. How were policies adopted and implemented? Did they achieve any degree of success that would allow for real and lasting equality? What were the politics of the pursuit of corporate gender equality across the 15 countries? What worked and did not work and why? What are the lessons to be drawn from these experiences? The findings of the book show that policy implementation does matter, but that in this last bastion of male domination, policies have had more success in increasing women's numbers over challenging gender-biased norms that block women of all cultural and socio-economic backgrounds from gaining real power on boards. The path-breaking study shows that the reasons for this slow change are highly complex and case specific, in the details of each policy mix. While progress has been slow in coming, it has still been made even in these challenging times. Future policy success, the book concludes, is in the hands of men and women willing to come forward to overcome these well entrenched obstacles.
