What lessons can we learn from their experiences? Twenty-five nurses—from hospitals, private practices, and in home health care—tell about their experiences with death. Hear from people new to the field as well as those who have been in nursing for decades about how they deal with grief, the controversies about end-of-life decisions, the challenges of caring for people as they die, and the harrowing experience of telling their family members. Edited and introduced by a registered nurse, the book is a resource for both nurses and anyone who wants to better understands death and dying.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published on the fiftieth anniversary of Marcel Duchamp’s death, Duchamp’s Last Day offers a radical reading of the artist’s final hours. Just moments after Duchamp died, his closest friend Man Ray took a photograph of him. His face is wan; his eyes are closed; he appears calm. Taking this image as a point of departure, Donald Shambroom begins to examine the surrounding context—the dinner with Man Ray and another friend, Robert Lebel, the night Duchamp died, the conversations about his own death at that dinner and elsewhere, and the larger question of whether this radical artist’s death can be read as an extension of his work. Shambroom’s in-depth research into this final night, and his analysis of the photograph, feeds into larger questions about the very nature of artworks and authorship which Duchamp raised in his lifetime. In the case of this mysterious and once long-lost photograph, who is the author? Man Ray or Duchamp? Is it an artwork or merely a record? Has the artist himself turned into one of his own readymades? A fascinating essay that is both intimate and steeped in art history, Duchamp’s Last Day is filled with intricate details from decades of research into this peculiar encounter between art, life, and death. Shambroom’s book is a wonderful study of one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sailing—and making history—on the cusp of Prohibition, the Titanic defined drinking and dining styles of the Edwardian era. Societal lines were distinctly drawn as never before. Laden with never-before-experienced luxuries in all three classes, the Titanic set an unprecedented standard and created a time capsule that continues to draw intense interest even 110 years later. Veronica Hinke has curated a culinary narrative that informs and provides new and thrilling insights on what passengers and crew experienced. The Last Night on the Titanic is based on carefully researched and studied historic news articles, menus, and books, as well as dozens of intimate interviews with experts and family members of passengers and crew. Recipes related to moving stories of tragedy and survival are interspersed throughout and easy for readers to make at home, including: · Recipes for English spring pea soufflé, apple meringue, and more mouthwatering Titanic foods · Drink recipes from the hotels that first class passenger John Jacob Astor IV established that still carry on today—including the original martini · True and accurate accounts of the real Margaret “Unsinkable Molly” Brown · Letters from passengers that were received days after the sinking, including one to legendary journalist HV Kaltenborn. · True stories from his family members about what really happened to Chief Baker Charles Joughin “We all think about what our last meal would be. On her maiden voyage, guests on the world’s most famous passenger ship, the RMS Titanic, were dining on the finest foods prepared by the best French chefs and toasting with the best champagne, not knowing that it would be their last meal. Veronica Hinke has taken a story that we all know so well and interwoven delicious recipes that, while historic and old, are classic and worthy of any modern-day table. She has unearthed a vibrant culinary subtext that often left me breathless and dreamy-eyed. She skillfully captures the magical flavor of a fascinating era in our history. Two spatulas raised in adulation.” —Chef Art Smith, former personal chef to Oprah Winfrey “A rich and fascinating addition to Titanic literature. If a book can be compared to a soft, warm sweater, that’s exactly how I’d describe Veronica Hinke’s The Last Night on the Titanic. The reader will find the text on each page purled with anecdotes and personal details about the luxury liner’s passengers and crew and want to snuggle deeper into each story and recipe.” —Rick Archbold and Dana McCauley, co-authors, Last Dinner on the Titanic “Congratulations on a well-researched book!” —Yvonne Hume, Great-niece of Titanic First Violinist John (“Jock”) Hume

Book excerpt: This book traces the career of Roy Ward Baker, one of the great survivors of the British film and television industry. He directed the landmark British film Morning Departure (1949), worked at Twentieth Century Fox in Hollywood in the early 1950s where he directed Marilyn Monroe, and the best version of the Titanic disaster, A Night to Remember in 1958. He then moved to television series such as The Avengers, The Saint and Minder. Later Baker re-emerged as a major director of science-fiction (Quatermass and The Pit) and horror films (Asylum). Geoff Mayer provides an industrial and aesthetic context in which to understand the interrelationship between a skilled classical director and the transformation of the British film industry in the 1950s.

Book excerpt: There is something mystical about holding the hand of a person who is “crossing over.” It can be heartbreaking, of course, but also very holy and beautiful. Some of the pieces in this collection share the experience of personal loss when a loved one dies. Often the presence of an angel or another mystical experience is shared. But not only in death—there are also stories here of the way the mystical world interacts with us in daily life. And not only angels, but also mothers, fathers, sisters, grandfathers, friends, and even a homeless man and a dog. Book excerpt: The path of true love never did run smooth...did it? Kelsey Anderson is stuck in a rut so big, she’ll need a 4-wheel drive to get out. She’s just been made redundant from her dead-end job, and boyfriend Fran is so busy climbing up the career ladder that he’s forgotten how to have fun. She needs to change her life – and fast. Stumbling across an advert for tour guides in Stratford-Upon-Avon seems like the perfect way to bring the sunshine back. In an impulsive move, she moves from her small Scottish village to Shakespeare’s birthplace, armed only with a suitcase and her battered copy of Shakespeare’s Sonnets. Kelsey quickly falls in love with the place, her job as a tourist guide allowing her to explore every inch of the picture-perfect town, from cosy cafes to the picturesque banks of the river. But it’s not just the town that captures her heart, as she finds herself torn between the actors Will and Jonathan who both vie for her affections. But will beautiful Peony, the lead actress at the Oklahoma theatre company where Jonathan is playing Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, play a role in keeping Kelsey and Jonathan apart? Or will flirtatious, charming Will, the fellow tour guide who has set his sights on Kelsey, keep the star-crossed lovers from finding their happy ending? A gorgeously uplifting, feel good romance that will captivate readers of Holly Martin, Cathy Bramley and Milly Johnson. Readers are loving One Summer’s Night: 'I absolutely loved this debut novel from Kiley Dunbar...I haven't enjoyed a book in this genre as much as this for a long time...I defy anyone not to be rooting for Kelsey and booking a mini-break to Stratford when they finish this book! Book excerpt: The French poet and author of Mount Analogue shares a satirical allegory of the absurdities of intellectual society. As in Rene Daumal’s cult classic Mount Analogue, A Night of Serious Drinking concerns an autobiographical protagonist on a mind-expanding journey. But rather than seeking enlightenment, the anonymous narrator recounts an evening getting drunk with a group of friends. As the party becomes intoxicated and exuberant, the narrator’s wandering lead him from seeming paradises to the depths of pure hell. The characters our hero encounters go by absurd titles, such as Anthographers, Fabricators of useless objects, Scienters, Nibblists, and Clarificators. Yet the inhabitants of these strange realms are only too familiar: scientists dissecting an animal in their laboratory, a wise man surrounded by his devotees, politicians angling for influence, and poets expounding their rhetoric. Their hilarious antics and intellectual games reveal incisive social commentary that combines poetic imagination and philosophical depth.
