Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Situation Report: Fertilizer-Pesticide Mixtures; September 1955 Dual-purpose mixtures, containing a fertilizer and a pesticide, give the farmer the opportunity to do two important field jobs in one operation. Advantages-but also varied problems-involved in this idea of applying a pest-killer along with crop nutrients have been recognized in the United States for at least 25 years. Until World War 11, commercial production of such mixtures stayed small. But in recent years, the demand has grown rapidly. Tonnage last year increased Meanwhile fertilizer-pesticide mixtures have been gaining use in a number of other countries, also. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Feed Situation: September 22, 1955; Fds-153 Although the corn and sorghum grain crops were reduced sharply by drought in late July and August in the Midwest, a record supply of feed grains and other concentrates is still in prospect. The total sup ply of 195 million tons is 9 percent larger than last year and 13 percent above the 1949-53 average. Allowing for some further increase in grain consuming livestock, the prospective supply per animal unit is also a record and 8 percent above the 5-year average. The 1955-56 supplies of each of the four feed grains are expected to be the largest on record, due to combinations of high yields, record carryover stocks, and large acreages of oats, barley, and sorghum grains. Total production of feed grains was estimated in September at 129 mil lion tons, 11 million tons less than in August, but 7 million more than in 1954, and second only to the record of 135 million tons in 1948. This appears sufficient to meet all expected requirements in 1955-56 and leave a carryover at the close of the season a little above the record of about 40 million tons this year. The corn supply is now estimated at million bushels, a little above the previous record of 1949-50. The crop was estimated in September at million bushels, 364 million less than was estimated in August, but 149 million more than in 1954. A record carryover of about million bushels is in prospect for October 1. The hay supply for 1955-56 is estimated at 123 million tons, 3 percent larger than in 1954-55, and is generally ample for the live stock oh farms. Supplies are much larger than last year in the South and Southwest, where the 1954 drought sharply curtailed the growth of forage crops. Trouble. The intentions to=-plant report shows some producing areas are proposing _to plant too many late cr0p potatoes, Benson pointed out. A'creage OF hay for harvest in 1954 is estimated at million acres, 25 percent larger than in 1953 and slightly above the 1943 - 52 average. With average yields, it looks like about 105 million tons Will be produced this year. Assuming a carryover of about 215 million tons on May 1 the total hay supply will be about the same as in 195344, both in total and per animal unit. Also, if the growing season is more nearly normal, hay supplies should be better distributed than in either of the past 2 years. Georgia led all other states last year in broiler production - about 12 per cent of the United States total. Arkansas was next With 8 percent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consumption of Commercial Fertilizers and Primary Plant Nutrients in the United States: Year Ended June 30, 1957 Unlike the year 1955-56 when consumption of fertilizers in most of the regions was lower than-in 1954-55, consumption in 1956-57 was higher than in 1955-56 in all but a few regions. In the few exceptions where consumption was lower, the amount of decrease was usually not as great as occurred the previous year. Consumption of mixtures in the South Central region has continued to decrease which was offset, in part, by a higher use of materials. Only in the Pacific region has consumption of both classes increased and in the South Atlantic region, decreased in the two years, respectively. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fertilizer Situation: Letter From the Secretary of Agriculture, Transmitting in Response to a Senate Resolution of January 26, 1921, a Statement on the Fertilizer Situation in the United States If this report had been called for as of July 1920, before the break in fertilizer material prices due to the credit situation and the sub normal buying power, this department would have felt it necessary to report a doubt as to the sufficiency of the supply of a number of the fertilizer materials and to state that the prices then prevailing for many of the materials were high and practically prohibitive. With the situation which has since developed in Europe, in Japan, and in this country, a threatened shortage has been followed by an undoubted surplus and makes the situation difficult to handle. It is evident that the fertilizer manufacturers and importers did not follow the conditions of supply and demand as closely as they Were known to this department. It seems evident also that, if the department had had sufficient money to collect and publish informa tion as to stocks and probable demand by the farmers, it would have been helpful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commercial Fertilizers: Report for 1955 The term commercial fertilizers, -as used in the Connecticut fertilizer statute, includes any and every substance imported, manufactured, pre pared or sold for fertilizing or manuring or soil amendment purposes, ex cept barnyard manure and stable manure which have not been artificially treated or manipulated, marl and lime. An amendment of the law in 1949 permitted fertilizers to be labelled with guaranties of elements other than nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, but did not change the requirement that mixed fertilizers must contain at least per cent of nitrogen, and l per cent of either phosphoric acid or potash, for guaranties of these elements to be made. Phosphorus must be declared as available phosphoric acid (except in the case of bone, tankage and other natural organic materials, where total phosphoric acid is guar anteed), and potassium as water-soluble potash; all other elements must be guaranteed in terms of percentages of the elements, not as oxides or salts. A registration fee of payable annually, is charged for each element guaranteed in each brand of fertilizer; there. Is also a six-cent tonnage tax, payable semiannually. While manufacturers usually register their own fertilizers, if a retailer sells a fertilizer manufactured by an out of state firm, and that firm re fuses to register, under the law the retailer ls responsible for registration fees and tonnage taxes. The retailer, therefore, should assure himself that the requirements of the law have been met by the manufacturers of the brands which he handles, or himself be prepared to meet all these requirements. The law exempts from registration, and from other requirements, only: (1) fertilizers passing through the State in transit; (2) fertilizers and fer tilizer materials shipped to regular fertilizer factories to be used for manufacturing purposes; and (3) fertilizers and fertilizer chemicals sold to The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station for experimental purposes.
