Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fertilization of Peach Orchards As before indicated, but very little systematic work has been done in the study of the food requisites of the peach. The problem so far has been attacked along two lines. The first was an attempt to determine by careful chemical analysis of plant and' fruit the amount and proportion of the several elements in the tree and to deduce from this data the probable kinds and amounts of plant food required. Other investigator have adopted the simple and more certain method of applying different fertilizers to the trees and watching results. It now looms up before the economist as the problem of the age, since it vitally concerns the food supply of the world. The Greek philosopher, the agrarian writer of Rome, the groping student; of the fifteenth century, and the modern scientist have all sought to solve the mystery of a plant's growth and the source of its food supply. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Peach Orchard: A Sketch of the Practice of Peach, Growing in North America at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century The rapid specialization of all the fruit-growing industries in North America has made the production of peaches an art by itself. To keep pace with such specialization it has been found expedient to discuss the management of the several fruit crops in separate monographs. Peach growing is now a large and important industry and deserves a book of its own. The demand for such a book has existed for several years, but special difficulties have been experienced in meeting it. The work of preparing such a book was undertaken by the late Charles Wright of Delaware, and by the late Prof. W. G. Johnson of the Orange Judd Company, but both gentlemen died leaving the manuscripts unwritten. The writer has, indeed, experienced many tedious and troublesome delays, but has finally brought the work to completion through the help of many kind friends. In writing this book he has called to his aid a large number of practical peach growers in all parts of the United States and Canada, whose help and advice he wishes most cordially to acknowledge. To interpret properly their wide and varied experience has been the author's prime endeavor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fertilizing Peaches: Potash in Its Relation to Peach Growing Thus it appears that the trees make a considerable de mand on the three essential elements of plant food which the farmer is ordinarily called upon to supply to his soil. Of course, it is understood by the orchardist that it takes something like fourteen elements to supply the needs of his trees, but ordinarily, with the exception of nitrogen, phos phoric acid, and potash, and sometimes lime, all of the other ten or eleven are found in the soil in sufficient abundance to be disregarded from a practical point of view. The analy ses quoted above show that peaches require a much larger per cent of potash for their perfection than is usually considered necessary, and while the phosphoric acid is also shown to be essential, the smaller amount required leads us to conclude that the soil will more often supply this mineral constituent in sufficient quantities than it will the potash. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fertilizing Deciduous Fruit Trees in California The significance in the fertilizer program of this scarcity of roots in the surface soil, even where roots have not been destroyed by cultivation, becomes evident when one considers the fixation of fertilizers by the soil. Most soils can fix - that is, remove from the soluble condition - certain substances commonly used for fertilizers. Potassium (potash) is so fixed. Even on light soils whose fixing power is less than that of heavy soils, large applications of potassium are necessary for penetration into the root zone. Phosphate, even when supplied in large quantities, may also be fixed by the soil. And, as will be discussed later, ammonia is fixed in the same way as potassium.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peach Culture The great increase of the peach trade is shown by the fact that the shipment from the Peninsula in 1870 was stated at baskets. In the abundant year of 1875 the shipment reached over baskets, and it is estimated that as many, or more, were left on the trees or under them. Among the inventions to facilitate the operations of the peach-grower that have appeared since the first edi tion are Peach Cullers. One of these will do the work of five or six hands; and as they do it as well, or better, they have, in large orchards, superseded culling by hand. Hence we find the almond-tree named by Moses, and its precocity in flowering seemed to be accepted as a sign of the future devotion of the tribe of Levi for the priesthood. Virgil also accepts the free flowering of the almond as at once proof and omen of a fruitful season. The merry month of May must have been more genial in his day than in these degenerate times, when May makes a ravenous cold snap or collation of myriads of peach and almond blossoms. All before the merry month is cheerful, fair, and beautiful - all behind a blighted, blackened wilderness of barrenness and sterility. Still, it must be said for Virgil that he wrote of standard almond trees, which did not rush so early as our peaches and nectarines forced back against hot roasted with the fiery heats of spring sunshine, and frozen through immediately afterwards with the cold darts of May night frosts, without a veil of cloud to tone down the energy of intense radiation. However, it is hardly fair to merry May to credit her with all our fruit failures, and with blighting the beauty of our standard or dwarf almond and peach trees, for these flower through February and March in warm localities, and also in April. It is this earliness and profusion of blooming that have endeared these plants to man in all ages, and some types and forms of peaches and almonds have probably been cultivated by him for his pleasure and use since the dawn of civilisation. It is, however. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
