To keep pace with such specialization it has been found expedient to discuss the management of the several fruit crops in separate monographs. Peach growing is now a large and important industry and deserves a book of its own. The demand for such a book has existed for several years, but special difficulties have been experienced in meeting it. The work of preparing such a book was undertaken by the late Charles Wright of Delaware, and by the late Prof. W. G. Johnson of the Orange Judd Company, but both gentlemen died leaving the manuscripts unwritten. The writer has, indeed, experienced many tedious and troublesome delays, but has finally brought the work to completion through the help of many kind friends. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fertilizing Peaches: Potash in Its Relation to Peach Growing Thus it appears that the trees make a considerable de mand on the three essential elements of plant food which the farmer is ordinarily called upon to supply to his soil. Of course, it is understood by the orchardist that it takes something like fourteen elements to supply the needs of his trees, but ordinarily, with the exception of nitrogen, phos phoric acid, and potash, and sometimes lime, all of the other ten or eleven are found in the soil in sufficient abundance to be disregarded from a practical point of view. The analy ses quoted above show that peaches require a much larger per cent of potash for their perfection than is usually considered necessary, and while the phosphoric acid is also shown to be essential, the smaller amount required leads us to conclude that the soil will more often supply this mineral constituent in sufficient quantities than it will the potash. Hence we find the almond-tree named by Moses, and its precocity in flowering seemed to be accepted as a sign of the future devotion of the tribe of Levi for the priesthood. Virgil also accepts the free flowering of the almond as at once proof and omen of a fruitful season. The merry month of May must have been more genial in his day than in these degenerate times, when May makes a ravenous cold snap or collation of myriads of peach and almond blossoms. All before the merry month is cheerful, fair, and beautiful - all behind a blighted, blackened wilderness of barrenness and sterility. Still, it must be said for Virgil that he wrote of standard almond trees, which did not rush so early as our peaches and nectarines forced back against hot roasted with the fiery heats of spring sunshine, and frozen through immediately afterwards with the cold darts of May night frosts, without a veil of cloud to tone down the energy of intense radiation.
