Book excerpt: The increased attendance required concurrent sessions for the 48 oral presentations and 190 submitted posters (for more details see Website: www.ct.ornl.gov/symposium). Attendees came from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, India, Japan, Korea, Mexico, The Netherlands, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, and Ven ezuela, as well as from the United States. This international perspective was continued in a Special Topic Ses sion sponsored by the International Energy Agency (lEA) Bioenergy Pro gram on Biofuels and chaired by Jack Saddler and David Gregg from the University of British Columbia. Several of the 10 member countries in this network are approaching Demonstrations of the Biomass-to-Ethanol pro cess and have a range of more fundamental projects that look at various aspects of pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation, and lignin utilization. Presenters from several of the participating countries described their country's biomass-to-ethanol projects, and differential factors such as the type of biomass available, the maturity of the wood or agricultural processing industry, and the willingness of government to bear the risk/ cost of development and demonstration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This directory is a comprehensive guide to the toxicity of over 1000 polymers, monomers and additives used by the rubber and plastics industries. Since the toxic properties of materials are determined by the toxic properties of the substance released by them, a significant proportion of the book deals with monomers, plasticisers, stabilisers, and other additives. In this regard, the book will be of use when assessing the toxic properties not only of existing materials but also of future materials containing components that have already undergone toxicological analysis. Each entry gives a brief description of the material and its uses followed by summaries of studies on its toxicity. Extensive references are included for those requiring further details on the tests and results. The handbook is intended as a reference work and will provide a valuable reference work for all those involved with health and safety in the rubber and plastics industries. "This publication is a translation of a Russian text. As a consequence, the polymers and additives are not strictly in English alphabetical order."

Book excerpt: The way in which our society exists, operates and develops is strongly influenced by the way in which energy is produced and consumed. No process in industry can be performed without a sufficient supply of energy, and without industry there can be no production of commodities, on which the existence of modern society depends. Energy systems have evolved over a long period and more rapidly over the last two centuries, as a response to the requirements of industry and society, starting with the combustion of fuels and building up to the exploitation of nuclear energy and renewable resources. It is clear that the evolution of energy systems is a continuous process, which involves constant technological developments and innovation. This book publishes papers presented at the First International Conference on Energy and Sustainability. Featured topics include: Energy Management; Energy and the Environment; Energy Markets and Policy; Energy Efficiency; Energy and External Costs; Computer Modelling; Energy Resources Management; Nuclear Fuels; Rational Use of Energy; Solid Fuel Energy; Energy and Built Environment; Exergy and Ecology; Energy and Life Cycle Analysis; Education and Training; Energy Systems and Pollution Control; Energy and Climate Change; Renewable Energy Technologies; Energy Storage and Transportation; Energy Analysis of Industrial Processes; Exergy and Economics; Regulations and Policies and Hydrocarbon Exploration and Recovery.
