Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Favorite Motor Ways of New England: Historical and Descriptive, With Illustrations, Comprehensive Road Maps and Sky-Line Sketches The purpose of this book is to add to the pleasure of automobile touring in New England by supplying, in concise form, information in regard to such points of interest as are met with on some of the principal highways of the region. It is not intended primarily as a path-finder, as it keeps for the most part to main lines of travel, but rather aims to answer the numerous questions which constantly occur to the tourist as to the significance of monuments and tablets, the identity of prominent buildings, the precise location of historical points, etc. If one thing beyond another has been "borne in" upon the writer in the preparation of the work, it is a revelation of the number of errors which creep into print. While many of these errors - quotations which do not appear in the originals from which they are quoted; pictures which do not show the places supposed to be pictured; mistaken references; conflicting dates; erroneous directions as to precise locations; history made out of legends and a perversion of historical facts - have been found and adjusted, it seems almost too much to expect that other mistakes - and perhaps those of even greater import - have not been retained or introduced. Out of this experience the writer is moved to preface his work with the words used by Cotton Mather in closing his Magnalia: "Reader, Cartegena was of the mind that unto those three things which the ancients held impossible, there should be added this fourth, to find a book printed without erratas.
