Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fathers of Greek Philosophy The substance of the following work has been already presented to the public in several Articles by the Author, which have appeared successively under the titles of Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates, in a recent edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. As these Articles all related to one definite period in the History of Ancient Philosophy, and are intimately connected with one another; it was suggested to the Author, that they might advantageously be combined as a whole in a separate Volume. For this purpose, accordingly, a revision of them has been undertaken, and considerable additions have been made under each head of the Inquiry; so as to convey, it is hoped, a more accurate and full information concerning the state of Philosophy during the period in question. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Greek Philosophy References to authorities, except of the most general kind, are precluded by the plan of the Series to which this Primer belongs. It is, there fore, as well for me to mention that I have gone to the original sources for my materials. The admirable work of Hermann Diels, Fragmente oler Vorsokratiker, Bd. I., Berlin, 1906, has been most helpful for the prae-sophistic philosophers. As regards the interpretation of early Greek philosophy I have found no reason to depart from the views given in my Philosophy of Greece At the same time I wish it to be under stood that, ih my opinion, the very scanty ih formation at our disposal permits no more than a conjectural interpretation of what the Greek philosophers from Thales to Socrates really taught. And it is only fit that the beginner should be told as much on his first introduction to the subject. The great thing is that he should become interested enough in these uncertainties to think that the time spent on them has not been thrown away. A. W. B. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greek Philosophy From the Earliest Period to the Time of Socrates, Vol. 1: With a General Introduction That this part, containing the General Introduction to the entire subject and the his tory of the earliest philosophers, should appear after others dealing with the later periods, is in some mea sure to be regretted, because Greek Philosophy is best treated as a whole, and gains immensely by being studied in the order of development; yet those who are acquainted with the previously translated portions of Dr. Zeller's work will be the more ready to welcome the introductory volume, without which, indeed, many things in the later philosophy, and in Dr. Zeller's treat ment of it, would have remained comparatively obscure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Philosophy Before Plato The original of the first six chapters of Part I was Offered to, and accepted by, the Graduate Faculties of Arts and Sciences in Columbia University, as a doctoral thesis. Since then the scope and character of the work have fundamentally altered; and in this later period I owe most to Professor A. A. Bowman, formerly Chairman of the Department of Philosophy in Princeton and now Professor of Moral Philosophy in Glasgow, who read the whole manuscript and offered valuable criticisms. I wish also to express my appreciation of the spirit of helpfulness manifested by members Of the Staff of the Princeton Uni versity Press, and in particular to Mr. Frank D. Halsey, Assistant Manager, for his careful attention to the editing of the manuscript. Finally, I am indebted to my wife, who has read all the proofs, and to my father-in-law, President John Grier Hibben, himself a philosopher, for his affectionate interest and constant encouragement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Greek Philosophy The first three parts of the present volume, which deal with the early Greek thinkers, with Plato, and with Aristotle, are taken from lectures given in the University of Glasgow in 1897-98 and the succeeding academical year. A later course has, however, been drawn upon for the concluding chapter both of Part II. And of Part III. The account of the Stoic philosophy which follows has been compiled from two different sets of lectures. One of these, given in 1899-1900, contains a brief sketch of the thinking of the Stoics as a whole. The other, two years later, enters in much greater detail into their dis eussions of the theory of knowledge: but this course was brought to a sudden close by the author's fatal illness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Greek Philosophy: Thales to Democritus In the present volume I have tried to meet this want so far as the early Greek philosophers are concerned, and to get under way with a simple, painless, and, I hope, not unentertaining history Of Greek Philosophy as a whole. I am encouraged to this attempt by my own feeling that philosophy is not really the impossibly abstract, abstruse, cold, and difficult thing of the popular imagination, but rather something essentially warm, close, nay, clinging to everyday life, highly colored, melodramatic, and naturally provocative and engrossing. And with this feeling goes the Opinion that its history is the story Of perhaps the most exciting and sensational pursuit with which the human mind has diverted as well as ennobled itself. If I shall have succeeded in insinuating that philosophy is not so dull and respectable after all, and in troubling the reader, however vaguely, with something of its fascination, I shall feel that I have done what - apart from amusing myself - I set out to do. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Thinkers, Vol. 3: A History of Ancient Philosophy It is true that the difficulties of thought to which we have alluded were not removed by the new teaching, but only clothed in a different garb. They reappeared in the form of questions such as - How are the fleeting individual things connected with their eternal archetypes? Do they participate in them, or are they copied from them? And what is the precise nature of this participation or process of copying? To these questions Plato never succeeded in returning a satisfactory answer; but, as Aristotle remarks in the above-quoted passage, he left them to be investigated by others. But this is not the place to discuss the consequences of a doctrine whose origin we have not yet completely accounted for. We must once more draw the reader's attention to a fundamental tendency of the human mind, and to its far-reaching effects. Abstractions are clothed by language in the same dress as objects of perception. Both are designated by substantives, and perhaps could not be designated in any other way. In the untrained mind, the Real and the Thing are so closely associated, that in ordinary language the two terms are synonymous. The very word real is derived from res, a thing. Forces, qualities, states, relations, are regarded as entities having the nature of things, and, when they produce lasting impressions upon the mind, as living beings endowed with will - as gods and daemons. After the mythological comes an ontological stage, a naive realism (in the mediaeval sense. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
