Book excerpt: “It’s official. That thing that classic art has been missing is a chubby reclining kitty.” —The Huffington Post Internet meme meets classical art in Svetlana Petrova’s brilliant Fat Cat Art. Featuring her twenty-two-pound, ginger-colored cat Zarathustra superimposed onto some of the greatest artworks of all time, Petrova’s paintings are an Internet sensation. Now fans will have the ultimate full-color collection of her work, including several never-before-seen pieces, to savor for themselves or to give as a gift to fellow cat lovers. From competing with Venus’s sexy reclining pose (and almost knocking her off her chaise lounge in the process) in Titian’s Venus of Urbino, to exhibiting complete disdain as he skirts away from God’s pointing finger in Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam, Zarathustra single-handedly rewrites art history in the way that only an adorable fat cat can.

It charts his growing up in North London in the forties and fifties, his diving enthusiastically into the swinging sixties, and his marriage, fatherhood and career in the seventies. Along the way, we meet all sorts of characters, more girls that you could shake a stick at, get immersed in amateur film-making, acting (in 'Alfie', amongst other things) and directing (a world premiere, amongst other things) in the amateur theatre, and working for a Hollywood film star. After many jobs in North London and the West End, he becomes a Sales Representative, and, with the help of one or two young ladies, eventually becomes a company director. The book ends at the beginning of the eighties, with our hero, not for the first time, at a crossroads . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the immediate aftermath of the First World War, Upper Silesia was the site of the largest formal exercise in self-determination in European history, the 1921 Plebiscite. This asked the inhabitants of Europe’s second largest industrial region the deceptively straightforward question of whether they preferred to be Germans or Poles, but spectacularly failed to clarify their national identity, demonstrating instead the strength of transnational, regionalist and sub-national allegiances, and of allegiances other than nationality, such as religion. As such Upper Silesia, which was partitioned and re-partitioned between 1922 and 1945, and subjected to Czechization, Germanization, Polonization, forced emigration, expulsion and extermination, illustrates the limits of nation-building projects and nation-building narratives imposed from outside. This book explores a range of topics related to nationality issues in Upper Silesia, putting forward the results of extensive new research. It highlights the flaws at the heart of attempts to shape Europe as homogenously national polities and compares the fate of Upper Silesia with the many other European regions where similar problems occurred.

Book excerpt: "Derek Prior always produces masterpieces of storytelling, with great characters full of life, relentless plots, and gripping and intense fight scenes." Mitchell Hogan, author of A Crucible of Souls The dwarven civil war might have ended, but the powers behind it still fester.... Snuv Scavage is about as lowborn as a dwarf can get. With no parents and no home, she tends Arnoch’s battle-goats and sleeps in their pen. But there is something special about this dwarf. Something written in her blood. When disturbing reports come in from the city of Jeridium, Snuv is sent to kill the heavily pregnant Skald, Nyra Sahtis, before she can give birth to her unnatural child. But Nyra is watched over by the Church of the Way, whose priests have changed beyond all recognition. And she enjoys the protection of Caelin the Cleaver, the most deadly warrior of her generation. Meanwhile, the wizard Venton Nap has returned to life on Aosia with only one thing on his mind: to bring back his deceased family from the Supernal Realm. Employing a guide from the backwater town of Malfen, Venton picks up on the ill-fated quest that once ended his life, determined to find the fabled lily cats of Rhylion and wrest from them the secret of life. As the ages old war between the Lich Lord of Verusia and the Witch Queen of Tho-Agoth at last comes to a head, plunging Medryn-Tha into a new age of darkness, Snuv is confronted by a dwarf with a plain-looking axe, which he claims is the legendary Paxa Boraga. A dwarf who has done his fair share of fighting, and who knows Snuv better than she knows herself. "A masterpiece of sword and sorcery storytelling. A visceral yet thoughtful epic." Book excerpt: City of Roses is a serialized epic very firmly set in Portland, Oregon—an urban fantasy mixing magical realism with gonzo noirish prose, where duels are fought in Pioneer Square and union meetings are beseiged by ghost bicycles. —Jo Maguire, a highly strung, underemployed telemarketer, has been knighted in the mysterious Court of Roses. Her roommate, Ysabel, is a Princess of the Court, and the intended Bride of the King Come Back (whomever that turns out to be). Together they must face the threats of bad dreams, changelings, surly exes, jealous lovers, intemperate peers, shabby magicians in ill-fitting suits, abstruse oracles, unemployment, eviction, and the nothing-time of three in the morning, when dawn seems so far off. Collecting chapters 12 - 22 of the critically acclaimed fantasy serial, Vol. 2, The Dazzle of Day, concludes most of the story begun in Vol. 1, "Wake up..."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the year 2025, newspaper editor Justin Wright takes on the establishment to find justice when a homeless woman is murdered and one of his young reporters is assaulted. The crime takes place in a Sacramento alley, the famous Dead Cat Alley, known for its public arts project: ceramic rooftop cats with over-sized eerie eyes. Soon it appears that the murder and assault may have been unrelated and that the reporter may have been working on a story with important implications for a local politician. Despite the futuristic time frame, Dead Cat Alley is anything but sci-fi. Rather, the book is a straightforward mystery in which people struggle with the same problems as today: relationship issues, balancing work and home life. Politicians are still caught up in power grabs; local governments are still arguing over funding issues. But the heart of this story is a subject clearly near and dear to veteran journalist Chatfield: the survival of newspapers. While editor Wright laments the slow demise of the newspapers of his day (“We’d bleed for stories, and some guy in a suit who never even saw the inside of a newsroom decided we should put our work online for nothing”), the Newspaper Preservation Act of 2014 has made papers viable again. Information is conveyed and constantly updated on thin sheets of plastic embedded with multicolored silicon particles that rearrange themselves via micro electric currents. The so-called ipapers can be folded, pocketed, unfolded and recharged. The mystery is a puzzler – even down to the last page – but in a good way: Readers wondering whether their take on the whodunit is what the author intended will want to discuss the ending with others. - Blue Ink Reviews In the year 2000 Dead Cat Alley had been declared an historic landmark. But by 2025 it had become a haven for Sacramento’s underclass, and then murder scene. Author James Chatfield takes readers on a thrilling ride in the year 2025 as Sacramento Valley Times Editor Justin Wright — himself on the edge of career burnout uses futuristic technology to solve the murder of an old woman and death a young reporter. As he probes deep into his investigation, Wright uncovers a complex web of deceit, politics, and murder that could very well cost him his life or the life of the woman who shares his passion for the written word. Filled with unpredictable twists and turns, Dead Cat Alley is sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats as they unravel the mystery.
