Book excerpt: From Style Rookie to Style Bubble, personal style blogs exploded onto the scene in the mid-2000s giving voice to young and stylish writers who had their own unique take on the seasonal fashion cycle and how to curate an individual style within the shifting swirl of trends. Personal Style Blogs examines the history and rise of style blogging and looks closely at the relationship between bloggers and their (frequently anonymous) readers as well as the response of the fashion industry to style bloggers' amateur and often unauthorized fashion reportage. The book charts the development of the style blogosphere and its transformation from an alternative, experimental space to one dominated by the fashion industry. Complete with examples of several famous fashion bloggers, such as Susie Lau, Rumi Neely, and Tavi Gevinson, the author explores notions of individuality, aesthetics, and performance on both sides of the digital platform. Findlay asks: what can style blogging teach us about women's writing and the performance of a private self online? And what drives style bloggers to carve a space for themselves online?

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2019 John Collier Jr Award Street style blogging has experienced a meteoric rise in popularity over the last decade. Amateur photographers, often with no formal training in fashion, have become critical arbiters of taste and trends, influencing the representations that appear in magazines and on runways, and putting new cities on the fashion world map. This cutting-edge book documents the evolution of street style photography, from the fieldwork photos of early anthropology to the glamorized snapshots that appear on blogs today, and explores the structural shifts in the global fashion industry that street style has helped bring about. Chronicling author and anthropologist Brent Luvaas' experience over three years of blogging through vivid street imagery and rich ethnographic detail, this book turns the lens of street style photography back onto anthropology itself, arguing that the phenomenon is a powerful mode of amateur ethnography. Bloggers blur the distinction between professional and amateur, insider and outsider, self and brand. This book documents that blur from the ground level-from the streets of Philadelphia to the sidewalks of New York Fashion Week. Street Style is an essential read for students and scholars of fashion, anthropology, sociology, media and cultural studies, and fans of street style photography alike.

Book excerpt: Fashion blogs are crucial news and inspirational sources for everyone who wants to stay up-to-date about fashion. These blogs are therefore both visually and with regard to content in competition with traditional media. Fashion blogs raise many questions. Is the fashion blogger the new trend-watcher? Can they be referred to as professional amateurs? How does blogging affect privacy? Is fashion blogging the ultimate way of self expression? Kirstin Hanssen and Felicia Nitzsche carried out a research. The main content of the book is divided into four categories: fashion journalism, street style photography, party photography and personal style blogs. Bloggers around the world have been interviewed and the interviews are supported by visual blog material.

Book excerpt: Fashion blogs are changing the dynamics of fashion by redefining the way fashion is determined. It is thus crucial for the fashion industry to understand the importance of the movement and the motivations behind blogging behavior in order to exploit the numerous opportunities blogs offer and to address these motivations that also more generally reflect customer needs. The purpose of this Bachelor thesis is to grasp why people blog about fashion and to offer a reflection about the impact of the blogs on the fashion industry. The research questions of the study are principally: "What are the motivations of the fashion bloggers?" and secondly "How and why it is useful for companies in the fashion industry to understand the bloggers, their blogs and their motivations?" With a focus on the first question, a qualitative empirical study was conducted. Twelve fashion bloggers, selected through the platform LOOKBOOK.nu, answered a questionnaire aimed at investigating their motivations to blog. Their answers were then analyzed following a qualitative content analysis approach (see Mayring, 2010). Six groups of motivations to fashion blog were identified: having a passion for fashion, selfexpression, self-improvement, social connection and interaction, belonging to the fashion world and the pleasure of blogging. Each of them unfolds in several dimensions. With the support of these results the thesis examines the second question and looks at how brands can use fashion blogs in a benefitial way, as an information source, an advertising medium, the creation of a corporate blog, as a canal for influencing opinions by managing of their relationship with the influential bloggers and collaborating with them in order that the bloggers will post positive information on their blogs. The fashion blogging motivations underline the need of the customer to be heard and his power in the transformed fashion dynamics and consequently confirm the necessity.

Book excerpt: This book explores omnichannel fashion and luxury retailing with a particular emphasis on the role of computer-mediated marketing environments in determining a consumer’s purchase and post-purchase trajectories. The fashion industry has evolved rapidly over the last few years with the diffusion of fast fashion and luxury democratization, not to mention the advent of ICT and the development of communication. Today, fashion companies face new challenges, such as how to manage brands and how to choose between marketplaces and digital marketspaces. While some companies focus on one channel selection, others embrace the omnichannel choice and look for a balance between the two environments. Whatever the strategy, it is essential to manage these touch-points in order to create interaction between consumers and brands, provide meaningful customer experiences, and to maximize customers’ engagement. An insightful read for scholars in marketing, fashion and retail, this book investigates the triangulation between branding, marketplace, and marketspace and its impact on the organization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first ever book devoted to a critical investigation of the personal style blogosphere, Minh-Ha T. Pham examines the phenomenal rise of elite Asian bloggers who have made a career of posting photographs of themselves wearing clothes on the Internet. Pham understands their online activities as “taste work” practices that generate myriad forms of capital for superbloggers and the brands they feature. A multifaceted and detailed analysis, Asians Wear Clothes on the Internet addresses questions concerning the status and meaning of “Asian taste” in the early twenty-first century, the kinds of cultural and economic work Asian tastes do, and the fashion public and industry’s appetite for certain kinds of racialized eliteness. Situating blogging within the historical context of gendered and racialized fashion work while being attentive to the broader cultural, technological, and economic shifts in global consumer capitalism, Asians Wear Clothes on the Internet has profound implications for understanding the changing and enduring dynamics of race, gender, and class in shaping some of the most popular work practices and spaces of the digital fashion media economy.

Book excerpt: Despite the fact there is plenty of academic material regarding the use of social media and blogs in business communication, very little research has been done in the area of constantly growing fashion blogosphere. The primary aim of this book is to fulfill the gap and provide proper understanding of the contemporary fashion blogosphere; its common general features, dynamic, and most of all its impact and potential use in fashion marketing and fashion brand management. Further more this book denies general opinion about ICTs as a treat to business communication, and about blogs as a threat to journalism. As it is explained, proper understanding of those Web 2.0 features disproves such claims and even shows the huge potential of those technologies not only in area of business communication and journalism."

Book excerpt: "Hilarious, insightful and smart. A must-read for anyone who wears clothes.” —Chelsea Handler *US Weekly, “Riveting Reads for Labor Day”* *Bustle, “2015 Books Every Funny Woman Should Read” and “September 2015’s Best Books”* *Refinery29 “Fall’s Most Highly Anticipated Nonfiction Reads”* *theSkimm, “Skimm Reads”* *Popsugar, “Motivational Books You Should Read this Fall”* *AM NY, “New Books for New Yorkers to Read This Fall”* The Lowdown on High Fashion Cosmopolitan.com editor Amy Odell knows what it’s really like to be a young woman working in the fashion industry. In Tales from the Back Row, Amy—funny and fearless—takes readers behind the stage of New York’s hottest fashion shows to meet the world’s most influential models, designers, celebrities, editors, and photographers. But first, she has to push her way through the crowds outside, where we see the lengths people go to be noticed by the lurking paparazzi, and weave her way through the packed venue, from the very back row to the front. And as Amy climbs the ladder (with tips about how you can, too), she introduces an industry powered by larger-than-life characters: she meets the intimidating Anna Wintour and the surprisingly gracious Rachel Zoe, not to mention the hilarious Chelsea Handler, and more. As she describes the allure of Alexander Wang’s ripped tights and Marchesa’s Oscar-worthy dresses, Amy artfully layers in something else: ultimately this book is about how the fashion industry is an exaggerated mirror of human fallibility—reflecting our desperate desire to belong, to make a mark, to be included. For Amy is the first to admit that as much as she is embarrassed by the thrill she gets when she receives an invitation to an exclusive after-party, she can’t help but RSVP “yes.”

Hawes was an outspoken critic of the fashion industry and a champion of ready-to-wear styles. Fashion Is Spinach, her witty and astute memoir, offers an insider's critique of the fashion scene during the 1920s and '30s. "I don't know when the word fashion came into being, but it was an evil day," Hawes declares. Style, she maintains, reflects an era's mood, altering only with changes in attitude and taste. Fashion, conversely, exists only to perpetuate sales. Hawes denounces the industry's predatory practices, advising readers to reject ever-changing fads in favor of comfortable, durable, flattering attire. Decades ahead of her time, she offers a fascinating and tartly observed behind-the-scenes look at the fashion industry's economics, culture, and ethics.
