Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farmer's Own Book of Intellectual and Moral Improvement No more are the privileges of the Gospel enjoyed, to their full extent, by every, or even by any Christian. The temptations which will be noticed, as springing from this employment, may not beset all, in the same degree; - but it is believed that they are real and dangerous foes, against which every member of the profession ought to be on his guard. For the sake of brevity, many duties of the Christian Farmer, have been omitted; and none has been mentioned which can be neglected, without injury to himself, and to the community, of which farmers constitute so large and interesting a part. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Mental Illumination and Moral Improvement of Mankind, or an Inquiry Into the Means by Which a General Diffusion of Knowledge and Moral Principle May Be Promoted, Vol. 5: Ilustrated With Engravings In endeavouring to promote a general diffusion of knowledge among thp various ranks of society, it becomes us likewise to inquire, whether the attempt would be accompanied with such beneficial effects as to warrant the labour and expense which must necessarily attend such an enterprise - and, whether any, insurmountable difficulties stand in the way of its accomplishment. There are not wanting, even amidst the light of science which is now shining around us, many individuals in the higher classes of society who are bold enough to insinuate, that an increase of knowledge would be injurious to the lower ranks of the commu nity - that its accomplishment is both undesirable and impracti cable - that the moral world will proceed on'ward as it has hitherto done - that there is no possibility of meliorating the condition of the great mass of nrankind, - and that it is altogether Utopian to attempt to direct the moral and intellectual energies of the human race into any other channel than that in which they have hitherto heen accustomed to flow. Such insinuations evidently flow from a spirit of misanthropy, and are intended, if possible, to fix the moral world in a quiescent state, as the material world Was sup posed to be in former times, and to damp every exertion that is now making to promote the improvement and the happiness of our species. They are likewise inconsistent with the dictates of Divine Revelation, which plainly declare that the knowledge of Jehovah shall cover the earth, as the waters cover the channels of the seas, and that all shall know him, from the least to the greatest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farmer and the New Day For many years I have been meditating upon the mat ters that have been written about in this book. I have lectured about them to students and talked about them to farmers and other folks. Long ago I planned to write them out in a book or series of books, but I have found it nearly impossible to write satisfactorily in the midst of administrative duties. Good thinking and good writing on themes such as these require from most of us, time, fresh energy, and sufficient relaxation of mind to enable one to chew the cuds of reflection. Ex ecutives find it difficult to secure these requisites. I am finishing these pages under the pressure of a demand to join at once colleagues overseas in educational work among our soldiers. All that I have attempted in this book, is to endeavor to state the larger problems which the farmer must face during reconstruction and to indicate the significance and character of the relations between him and the rest of society in this new era. There has been little at tempt to furnish solutions of specific problems; rather to indicate a few of the fundamental principles and methods by which agricultural improvement and an ad justment to world affairs can be made. Book excerpt: Moral thinking pervades our practical lives, but where did this way of thinking come from, and what purpose does it serve? Is it to be explained by environmental pressures on our ancestors a million years ago, or is it a cultural invention of more recent origin? In The Evolution of Morality, Richard Joyce takes up these controversial questions, finding that the evidence supports an innate basis to human morality. As a moral philosopher, Joyce is interested in whether any implications follow from this hypothesis. Might the fact that the human brain has been biologically prepared by natural selection to engage in moral judgment serve in some sense to vindicate this way of thinking—staving off the threat of moral skepticism, or even undergirding some version of moral realism? Or if morality has an adaptive explanation in genetic terms—if it is, as Joyce writes, "just something that helped our ancestors make more babies"—might such an explanation actually undermine morality's central role in our lives? He carefully examines both the evolutionary "vindication of morality" and the evolutionary "debunking of morality," considering the skeptical view more seriously than have others who have treated the subject. Interdisciplinary and combining the latest results from the empirical sciences with philosophical discussion, The Evolution of Morality is one of the few books in this area written from the perspective of moral philosophy. Concise and without technical jargon, the arguments are rigorous but accessible to readers from different academic backgrounds. Joyce discusses complex issues in plain language while advocating subtle and sometimes radical views. The Evolution of Morality lays the philosophical foundations for further research into the biological understanding of human morality.
