Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fancies of a Dreamer An aged man, in sleep profound, Beneath a tree, upon the ground. I went, and gazed upon his face But never dld I see, On human countenance, such trace Of settled misery! Was't grief or guilt disturb'd his rest? Perchance he might be poor - Opprest Without a home to shield his head And fain his weary limbs to spread Upon the green roof of the dead! His threadbare garments told a tale Of poverty and want; And o'er his furrow'd forehead pale His silver hair grew scant; And in one corner of his eve There was a tear-drop, not quite dry, That silent witness told me all! Mine eye grew moist and dim; And hot and bitter tears did fall For the Unknown - for him, Who, even in his noonday sleep Could not forbear his lot to weep. When they enter upon life they find a ready-made house, possibly ready furnished waiting for them. But these are fortune's favourites. The majority have no houses to begin with, and have to find them for them selves. There are two courses open to those who want houses: they may either buy a patch. Of ground and build a new house upon it; or they may look about for an empty house that some one else has built and does not want, and live in that. Download or read book A Modern Dreamer (Classic Reprint) written by Edmund March Vittum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Modern Dreamer Is there room for dreams? The world is crowded, but is there not still unoccupied some manger for meditation? Is there not in this modern life of activity and accomplishment space left for a little sentiment, even though it be touched with a bit of old-fashioned fancy? Is there not some corner in the shadow of the skyscrapers where the Mystic may rest and look beyond the dust and smoke to a far-away estate which is neither taxed nor mortgaged nor advertised? Discarded machinery is sold for junk and thrown upon the scrap heap. In a western town one may often see half a dozen farmers working at one of those piles, trying to find odd pieces which will enable them, at small expense, to patch and mend, and perhaps make their plows and planters, their mowers and harvesters, last another season. When Truth becomes ineffective it is "junked," and called facts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Dreamers written by Lennox Robinson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dreamers: A Play in Three Acts There is fact in this play and there is fancy, and only the student of those dreaming days will know where the one merges with the other. He is scarcely likely to approve of this attempt to recapture the emotion of an historical episode by means that are very often unhistorical; to his trained mind any study of Robert Emmet's insurrection which ignores Owen Kirwan, Anne Devlin and many another is unworthy of serious consideration. But selection and rejection of incidents and characters is the beginning and end of all playmaking; even in plays dealing with imaginary people there must always remain the country on the dark side of the moon unknown to the audience but as vivid to the playwright as the side that shines on the stage, how much more crowded must that dark side be in an historical play when into a few acts must be crushed the emotions and actions of hundreds of people during several months? That is the only defence I can offer to his just criticism on the omissions in the play. He will also, probably, quarrel with the title of the play and say that Robert Emmet was practical in all his qualities, a soldier, a tactician, a most able organiser. I agree. But all these things were fused together for one purpose by the most practical quality of all - his dream. Dreams are the only permanent things in life, the only heritage that can be hoarded or spent and yet handed down intact from generation to generation. Robert Emmet's dream came down to him through - how many? - generations. He passed it on undimmed. It is being dreamed to-day, as vivid as ever and - they say - as unpractical. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Behold This Dreamer! In a woman of Clara's temperament, a sick headache may be the prelude to unimaginable disaster. The throbbing pain at her temples, the tired ache in her back and thighs, the goading necessity of household drudgery which cannot be left undone, the consuming poison of fatigue, may impel her finally to a step of decision. Both sides 'of the family were agreed that Clara was a good Christian woman. Even Charley's mother admired her patience. When she was raising Charley, she often remarked, she never could stand him the way Clara stood him. The wonder was that Clara retained so much cheerfulness. She had not been raised to housework. Before marriage, her life had been quite different. But to-day Clara was getting a sick headache. It was Wednesday, which was ironing day. In the kitchen, Clara had laid out her ironing board, wrapped around with discarded bed-sheets, between the table and the back of an unpainted old chair. Over the board she was bent, moving a black iron forward and backward, in a jerky rhythm of fomenting dis content. She muttered to herself as she pressed the hot bottom of the iron against the starched fronts of Charley's shirts. On the gas stove, two other irons were heating above the humming circles of blue and yellow flames. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
