This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 969 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1800, Europeans governed about one-third of the world's land surface; by the start of World War I in 1914, Europeans had imposed some form of political or economic ascendancy on over 80 percent of the globe. The basic structure of global and European politics in the twentieth century was fashioned in the previous century out of the clash of competing imperial interests and the effects, both beneficial and harmful, of the imperial powers on the societies they dominated. This encyclopedia offers current, detailed information on the major world powers and their global empires, as well as on the people, events, ideas, and movements, both European and non-European, that shaped the Age of Imperialism.
Book Synopsis Japan and The Graphic by : Terry Bennett
Download or read book Japan and The Graphic written by Terry Bennett and published by Global Oriental. This book was released on 2011-11-02 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Launched in December 1869 in direct competition to The Illustrated London News, (ILN) which first appeared in 1842, The Graphic set out to upstage its competitor through the quality and amount of its illustrations (including colour) and the paper it was printed on. Together, however, the two periodicals dominated nineteenth-century British journalism. With circulations far in excess of The Times, the extent of the news – including considerable foreign reporting – opinion and miscellaneous data of these two publications provides an invaluable resource for researchers and historians. As with the ILN, this complementary one-stop reference volume brings together the complete archive of all reports, features, illustrations and incidental commentaries relating to Japan from the first report of 5 February1870 discussing Japan’s recent civil war, the overthrow of the ‘Shiogoon or Tyocoon’, the restoration of the Emperor (Mikado) and a vindication of Britain’s ‘policy of firmness’ vis à vis Japan. Its concluding report on 16 December 1899 (the year of the ratification of the ending of the Unequal Treaties was concluded) notes: ‘No power in the world stands in a more delicate and difficult position than Japan does just now.’ This volume of 400 pages includes an 8-page plate section featuring a selection of The Graphic’s colour printing relating to Japan, a full cross-referenced Index by J.E. Hoare, together with an historical perspective by former British Ambassador to Japan Sir Hugh Cortazzi and an introduction to The Graphic in the context of nineteenth-century media history by Terry Bennett.
Book Synopsis British Mandarins and Chinese Reformers by : Pamela Atwell
Download or read book British Mandarins and Chinese Reformers written by Pamela Atwell and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1985 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on previously untapped British and Chinese documents, this is a comparative study of British and Chinese administrative methods in the small rural district of Weihaiwei in the northeast Shantung Province. The British leased the territory from the Chinese in 1898 with the intention of maintaining traditional forms of government whenever possible. But in 1930, the Chinese officials of Chiang Kai-Shek's Nationalist government stepped in to administer the area. Ignoring the province's governmental heritage, instituting an inappropriate bureaucratic structure, and imposing continuous tax demands, they ultimately lost the faith and respect of the local people. A foreword by Dr. N. J. Miners compares and contrasts Weihaiwei's rendition to China in 1930 with the forthcoming return to Hong Kong to China in 1997.
Book Synopsis Naval Blockades and Seapower by : Bruce A. Elleman
Download or read book Naval Blockades and Seapower written by Bruce A. Elleman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-04-11 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new collection of scholarly, readable, and up-to-date essays covers the most significant naval blockades of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Here the reader can find Napoleon’s Continental Blockade of England, the Anglo-American War of 1812, the Crimean War, the American Civil War, the first Sino-Japanese War 1894-95, the Spanish-American War, the First World War, the second Sino-Japanese War 1937-45, the Second World War in Europe and Asia, the Nationalist attempt to blockade the PRC, the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, the British blockade of Rhodesia, the Falklands War, the Persian Gulf interdiction program, the PRC "missile" blockade of Taiwan in 1996, and finally Australia's recent "reverse" blockade to keep illegal aliens out of the country. The authors of each chapter address the causes of the blockade in question, its long and short-term repercussions, and the course of the blockade itself. More generally, they address the state of the literature, taking advantage of new research and new methodologies to provide something of value to both the specialist and non-specialist reader. Taken as a whole, this volume presents fresh insights into issues such as what a blockade is, why countries might choose them, which navies can and cannot make use of them, what responses lead to satisfactory or unsatisfactory conclusions, and how far-reaching their consequences tend to be. This book will be of great interest to all students and scholars of strategic studies, military history and maritime studies in particular.

Book Synopsis Modern Chinese Warfare, 1795-1989 by : Bruce A. Elleman
Download or read book Modern Chinese Warfare, 1795-1989 written by Bruce A. Elleman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-07-28 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did the Chinese empire collapse and why did it take so long for a new government to reunite China? Modern Chinese Warfare, 1795-1989 seeks to answer these questions by exploring the most important domestic and international conflicts over the past two hundred years, from the last half of the Qing empire through to modern day China. It reveals how most of China's wars during this period were fought to preserve unity in China, and examines their distinctly cyclical pattern of imperial decline, domestic chaos and finally the creation of a new unifying dynasty. By 1989 this cycle appeared complete, but the author asks how long this government will be able to hold power. Exposing China as an imperialist country, and one which has often manipulated western powers in its favour, Bruce Elleman seeks to redress the views of China as a victimised nation.

Book Synopsis A History of the Japanese People From the Earliest Times to the End of the Meiji Era by : Frank & Kikuchi Brinkley
Download or read book A History of the Japanese People From the Earliest Times to the End of the Meiji Era written by Frank & Kikuchi Brinkley and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 1915-01-01 with total page 1932 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IN the earliest eras of historic Japan there existed a hereditary corporation of raconteurs (Katari-be) who, from generation to generation, performed the function of reciting the exploits of the sovereigns and the deeds of heroes. They accompanied themselves on musical instruments, and naturally, as time went by, each set of raconteurs embellished the language of their predecessors, adding supernatural elements, and introducing details which belonged to the realm of romance rather than to that of ordinary history. These Katari-be would seem to have been the sole repository of their country's annals until the sixth century of the Christian era. Their repertories of recitation included records of the great families as well as of the sovereigns, and it is easy to conceive that the favour and patronage of these high personages were earned by ornamenting the traditions of their households and exalting their pedigrees. But when the art of writing was introduced towards the close of the fourth century, or at the beginning of the fifth, and it was seen that in China, then the centre of learning and civilization, the art had been applied to the compilation of a national history as well as of other volumes possessing great ethical value, the Japanese conceived the ambition of similarly utilizing their new attainment. For reasons which will be understood by and by, the application of the ideographic script to the language of Japan was a task of immense difficulty, and long years must have passed before the attainment of any degree of proficiency.
