Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Christmas Child" in this book isn't Jesus, but rather a boy born on Christmas Day, named "Chris". After his father forgets both Christmas and Chris’ birthday (not surprising as the father is an impoverished, overworked surgeon) He runs away from home and finds himself in a park, where he meets the fairy-queen. She tells him that all children born on the 25th of December have the gift of talking to the fairy-folk. What follows is an account of Chris’ adventures and meetings with the fairy folk and the stories they tell him. Some of the tales Chris hears, are stories of shape-shifting princesses, doomed supernatural lovers and peasants rewarded for kindness or punished for laziness and cruelty. A fairy persuades a knight who loves her to tear a page from a Bible inscribed with his dead mother's handwriting, When he presents her with the page she laughs, or rather cackles, at him and disappears. But what happens to the knight and the fairy? It is common knowledge that fairies always reward anyone who shows a stranger hospitality. Chris is always treated well by the fairies he encounters, though it's implied that this is only because he has special status as a "Christmas Child". He narrowly avoids being kidnapped by fairy women and forced to spend the rest of his life in an underground city. He is released because he coincidentally mentions the day of his birth. All the stories are accurate to original myths and folklore. In all, this is an endearing, if somewhat forgotten, work of fiction, wonderfully illustrated in colour and black-and-white by the late, great Willy Pogany (August 1882 – July 1955) 10% of the profit from the sale of this book are donated to charity. ===================== KEYWORDS/TAGS: Fairies and the Christmas Child, adventure, folklore, fairy tales, myths, legends, childrens stories, fables, Lilian Gask, Willy Pogany, Fairy Ring, Princess, Sea-Green Hair, Rose-Marie, Poupican, Bird, Window, White Stone, Happiness, Seven, Fair Queens, Pirou, Dwarf, Palace, Silver Horn, Little White Feather, Wild, Huntsman, White Princess, Favourite, Fates, Rock the cradle, fancy, wee brown men, dancing Elves, Fairy Princess, toss, hide, curtain, Madame Marguerite, Lord, Argouges, snow-white bird, Elberich, jeer, Otnit, old man, dance, maiden, Lower, window, rope of pearls, tickle, monster, Pepita, Christmas day, birth, Chris, fairy queen, forest,

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Christmas Fairy This letter will smell queer, darling; it will be fumigated before posting. It must be owned that when Bertie Fellowes received this letter, which was neither more nor less than a shattering of all his Christmas hopes and joys, that he fairly broke down, and hiding his face upon his arms as they rested on his desk, sobbed aloud. The forlorn boy from India, who sat next to him, tried every boyish means of consolation that he could think of. He patted his shoulder, whispered many pitying words, and, at last, flung his arm across him and hugged him tightly, as, poor little chap, he himself many times since his arrival in England, had wished someone would do to him. At last Bertie Fellowes thrust his mother's letter into his friend's hand. Read it, he sobbed. So Shivers made himself master of Mrs. Fellowes' letter and understood the cause of the boy's outburst of grief. Old fellow, he said at last, don't fret over it. It might be worse. Why, you might be like me, with your father and mother thousands of miles away. When Aggie is better, you'll be able to go home - and it'll help your mother if she thinks you are almost as happy as if you were at home. It must be worse for her - she has cried ever so over her letter - see, it's all tear-blots. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last of the Fairies: A Christmas Tale There was an old house near Wor sester on the very highest part of the hill, which is not very high after all. It was not a gentleman's house, nor a farm house, nor a cottage. Heaven knows what it had been in former years. It was nothing at all in A. D. 1651, but a moderate sized brick building, lined with old wainscot, with broken windows and latchless doors, and one portion of it a great deal taller than the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fireside Fairies, or Christmas at Aunt Elsie's Home truths in strange dresses would, perhaps, be an appropriate title for this unobtrusive volume, which, it' is hoped will meet the approbation of the little people for Whom it is expressly designed. There exists, in the minds of some parents, a strong and reasonable prejudice against Fairy Tales for children; as the extravagant imagery and im probable incidents, in which they generally abound, often mislead or bewilder the youthful imagination. But it is hoped this little book may escape such censure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds' Christmas Carol: Dramatic Version In the present arrangement the birth of Carol is depicted in a sort of fairy prologue, in which the welcome gift of the Christmas baby to the Bird household is shown in a series of pictures. As to the death of the Christmas child twelve years later, it is touched upon very lightly in the original story and retired still farther into the back ground in this dramatic version. An imaginary Doctor Bob has been introduced, one of a long line of physicians who have tried to deliver the child from the burden of her weakness and her crutch; and the last scene of the play suggests to the audience none but healing thoughts. The Angel of the Pro logue comes softly to Carol in her happy sleep, lifts the crutch and vanishes with a smile. The curtain goes down on a peaceful picture the merry chatter of the Ruggles children on their homeward way, mingling with the Christmas music that drifts into the big house from the church next door. Mary Louisa Molesworth (1839-1921) was an English writer of children's stories who wrote for children under the name of Mrs Molesworth. She is best known as a writer of books for the young, such as Tell Me a Story (1875), Carrots (1876), The Cuckoo Clock (1877), The Tapestry Room (1879), and A Christmas Child (1880). She has been called "the Jane Austen of the nursery". Excerpt: 'There must be somebody living over there,' he said. 'I see smoke rising—you can hardly see it now, the light is growing so dim, but I'm sure I did see it. There must be a little cottage there somewhere among the trees.' 'Oh, how nice!' exclaimed Maia. 'We must find it out. I wonder what sort of people live in it—gnomes or wood-spirits, perhaps? There couldn't be any real people in such a lonely place.' 'Gnomes and wood-spirits don't need cottages, and they don't make fires,' replied Rollo.
