Book excerpt: When a diagnosis of breast cancer left Lorraine Wise with an uncertain future, she and her husband Mike decided to make the most of the challenge life had thrown them. After consulting a financial guru they decided that taking early retirement to join the ranks of the grey nomads would be a stretch, but not impossible. So they did what they never thought they would and gave up their home base, their roots and their security. Lorraine wanted to make the most of whatever time she had left. Their bucket list wasnt long, but they decided to get on with it while they could. They became intrepid travellers, exploring many parts of our beautiful country. They walked through the most spectacular gorges, snorkelled the magnificent Ningaloo Reef, traversed Australias infamous wilderness tracks, fossicked for gems, became avid bird watchers and went fishing. They took a magnificent boat ride through the Buccaneer Archipelago and experienced the amazing Horizontal Waterfall. While they did follow the tar sometimes, Lorraine and Mike often went bush to find breathtaking views, peace, relaxation and glorious sunrises and sunsets that lit up the sky. After eight wonderful years of living and loving life it is time to share their travels.

Book Synopsis Deep Time Dreaming by : Billy Griffiths
Download or read book Deep Time Dreaming written by Billy Griffiths and published by Black Inc.. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People would have known about Australia before they saw it. Smoke billowing above the sea spoke of a land that lay beyond the horizon. A dense cloud of migrating birds may have pointed the way. But the first Australians were voyaging into the unknown. Soon after Billy Griffiths joins his first archaeological dig as camp manager and cook, he is hooked. Equipped with a historian’s inquiring mind, he embarks on a journey through time, seeking to understand the extraordinary deep history of the Australian continent. Deep Time Dreaming is the passionate product of that journey. It investigates a twin revolution: the reassertion of Aboriginal identity in the second half of the twentieth century, and the uncovering of the traces of ancient Australia. It explores what it means to live in a place of great antiquity, with its complex questions of ownership and belonging. It is about a slow shift in national consciousness: the deep time dreaming that has changed the way many of us relate to this continent and its enduring, dynamic human history. John Mulvaney Book Award: Winner Ernest Scott Prize: Winner NSW Premier's Literary Awards: Winner - Book of the Year NSW Premier's Literary Awards: Winner - Douglas Stewart Prize for Non-fiction Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards: Highly Commended Queensland Literary Awards: Shortlisted Prime Minister's Literary Awards: Shortlisted Educational Publishing Awards: Shortlisted Australian Book Industry Awards: Longlisted CHASS Book Prize: Longlisted ‘What a revelatory work! If you wish to hear the voice of our continent's history before the written word, Deep Time Dreaming is a must read. The freshest, most important book about our past in years.’ —Tim Flannery ‘Once every generation a book comes along that marks the emergence of a powerful new literary voice and shifts our understanding of the nation’s past. Billy Griffiths’ Deep Time Dreaming is one such book. Deeply researched, creatively conceived and beautifully written, it charts the expansion of archaeological knowledge in Australia for the first time. No other book has managed to convey the mystery and intricacy of Indigenous antiquity in quite the same way. Read it: it will change the way you see Australian history.’ —Mark McKenna, historian ‘Billy Griffiths’ Deep Time Dreaming: Uncovering Ancient Australia is a remarkable book, and one destined, I believe, to become a modern classic of Australian history writing. Written in vivid, evocative prose, this book will grip both the expert and the general reader alike.’ —Iain McCalman, author of The Reef: A Passionate History: The Great Barrier Reef from Captain Cook to Climate Change

Book excerpt: Peter Markham is a schoolteacher who has been abandoned by his female partner because she, rightly, considers him dull. Disappointed, he leaves the airfield in anger when a wild teenage girl forces him to stop, begging for help in retrieving her older stepsister, Julia, who has landed her glider in a hayfield a hundred kilometres away. He allows himself to be manipulated by Mitch, the younger girl, calling her a cunning little minx. Reluctantly, he does as she asks. This is the beginning of a series of life-changing experiences for him. Instructed by the older sister, he learns to fly, finds himself in love with the sport and with young Mitch, while confronting serious problems with Julia. Tragedy intervenes, but happier prospects emerge.

Book Synopsis Yarns from Yandilla by : Karen Knight-Mudie
Download or read book Yarns from Yandilla written by Karen Knight-Mudie and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When two newcomers settle in the Shire of Yandilla (situated somewhere in the middle of the hinterland that skits the long eastern coast of Australia) they disrupt the peaceful environment. They play pranks on the folk of LillyVille, they cause havoc in the valley and they upset the fairies and elves. Those newcomers are Barry Badger and Tub the Toad. Neither Barry Badger nor Tub the Toad understands the order of things in the Shire. Barry's youth and exuberance allow him to be led astray by the cunning of Tub the Toad and both find themselves the centre of attention for all the wrong reasons. The fairy, Princess Yllil, attempts to help Barry Badger in his quest for recognition while, at other times, it is her brother, Prince Staj, who alerts inhabitants of Yandilla Shire to pending danger. The fairies link all the characters together as the yarns unfold. The yarns are based on incidents that highlight peculiar attributes of specific Australian animals. Wise Woggle Wombat can be heard giving rhyming advice and, together with Kevin Kanga's strength and common sense, the two Australian animals present an under- current of knowledge about the Australian bush. Because the yarns develop over time they grow in sophistication of plot and vocabulary. Similarly, Barry Badger matures in his manners and understanding as he gets closer and closer to being a 'true blue' Aussie. A Glossary of Special Words including "Strine" is found at the end of each yarn to encourage readers to tinker with tools in the head to investigate new knowledge.
