Book excerpt: With its unparalleled coverage of English slang of all types (from 18th-century cant to contemporary gay slang), and its uncluttered editorial apparatus, Cassell's Dictionary of Slang was warmly received when its first edition appeared in 1998. 'Brilliant.' said Mark Lawson on BBC2's The Late Review; 'This is a terrific piece of work - learned, entertaining, funny, stimulating' said Jonathan Meades in The Evening Standard. But now the world's best single-volume dictionary of English slang is about to get even better. Jonathon Green has spent the last seven years on a vast project: to research in depth the English slang vocabulary and to hunt down and record written instances of the use of as many slang words as possible. This has entailed trawling through more than 4000 books - plus song lyrics, TV and movie scripts, and many newspapers and magazines - for relevant material. The research has thrown up some fascinating results

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of bush tales vividly evokes an era now gone, when people struggled in isolation to tame the land and when camaraderie and mateship were everything. Young Brian Taylor was a ringer on Queensland cattle stations some fifty-five years ago. He worked on huge properties where the big mobs used to run and many of the people he met there had a larger-than-life quality. There was Dangerous Dan Smith, a hard, self-reliant man who wrote bush poetry; Father Peter, a gentle parish priest and occasional hero; and Charlie Gibson, an aboriginal stockman utterly at home in his own country. And then there was the landscape ? the plains and rivers and mountains ? that shaped the lives of them all. The Moonlight Stallion is Brian Taylor's second collection of reminiscences about a vanishing way of life in outback Australia ? about people, wild and working animals, and country. Readers of The Brumby Mare have been clamouring for more and new readers, whether from the bush or the city, will be moved to laughter and to tears by these heartfelt stories. A quintessential Australian bushman, Brian Taylor has spent most of his life on the land. Working as a drover, a stockman, a fencer, a shearer and a saddler, he has gathered a lifetime of stories over the years as he travelled way out past the Barcoo, along dusty plains and beside dry creek beds under the endless southern sky. Also available, together with The Brumby Mare, as the single volume A Swag Of Memories: Australian Bush Stories.

Book excerpt: Breaking records and challenging the limits of human ability are central to much of our understanding of athletic track and field sports, with a world record title arguably as valued as an Olympic gold medal. Some particular limits and records take on greater significance, however, as in the case of the Four-Minute Mile which was roundly believed to be impossible until Roger Bannister shattered the illusion with half a second to spare in May 1954. These essays look at the background of Bannister’s achievement and the meaning that was ascribed to it by the media and the public at large, drawing on an array of interdisciplinary and international influences to unpick the legend surrounding an historic moment in our social and sporting past.

Book excerpt: The identity of suburbia, so far as it can be ascribed one, is shifting and insecure, a borderline and liminal space. Dominant stereotypes have listed it as ‘on the margins’ beyond edges of cultural sophistication and tradition’ and the areas that make up ‘sprawl’. But in the twenty-first century this static view has to be modified. As is evident from this collection, suburban dwellers themselves have redefined themselves. This collection explores the range and complexity of twenty-first century responses to city suburbs, predominantly in Sydney. It draws on a range of approaches – from history to creative non-fiction and multi-media.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author’s family heritage is traced back to convict stock with the mother’s side Irish and the father’s English. Tasi was born on a remote Bass Strait Island at the end of the great depression and before the initiation of World War Two, virtually living off the land with little schooling. Mother nature and necessity was his education. On horseback with a gun in hand, trapping, fishing and hunting, while mainly dairy farming with his father and two elder siblings was the norm. Amidst the conveniences of today, Tasi never experienced electricity or even riding in a car, and all this within the first ten years of his life. The author was always going to be a soldier with his families’ military history detailing ten members, which involved service in World War One and World War Two. He was the only member that joined during peace time though his military service, which covered almost twenty-six years, included overseas involvement in the warring campaign of The Malayan Emergency and two tours of Viet Nam. Tasi’s post-military service included involvement in the 100th anniversary (2018) of the battles on the Western Front with a presentation to the Mayor of Montbrehain, France (the village reclaimed in General Monash’s last conflict of World War One utilising the Australian Imperial Forces), Dawn Services at both Gallipoli, Turkey and Villers Bretonneux, France, which upon invitation, included a wreath-laying ceremony at Menin Gate, Ypres Belgium on behalf of Australia. Interlaced within this is the author’s rugby career over forty years, in both service and civilian capacity. The book details the many stories of his involvement as a player, captain, and captain/coach of local and representative military rugby in both the northern and southern hemispheres. This then transpired into a tenure of involvement within Queensland Rugby Union. Insightfully at another layer Tasi also shares the creation and his Australian involvement with the development of the Veterans and Golden Oldies Rugby movement up to an international level. The travelling experience of the author covers six continents with much of it being rugby-related though also covers numerous other sporting experiences. It involves some of the world’s great and renowned sporting identities with Tasi being entertained by some. This book is factual, historical, political, sporting, humorous and sad, which reaches out to an age group from the 1930s into the twenty-first century.

From his early pieces for the National Lampoon, through his classic reporting as Rolling Stone’s International Affairs editor in the 1980s and 1990s, and his brilliant, inimitable political journalism and analysis, P. J. O’Rourke has been entertaining and provoking readers with high octane prose, a gonzo Republican attitude, and a rare ability to make you laugh out loud. Christopher Buckley once described his work as “S. J. Perelman on acid.” Thrown Under the Omnibus brings together his funniest, most outrageous, most controversial, and most loved pieces in the definitive O’Rourke reader. Handpicked and introduced by the humorist himself, Thrown Under the Omnibus is the essential O’Rourke anthology. “The funniest writer in America.” —The Wall Street Journal

Book excerpt: Meet Billy Glasheen, a fresh voice in crime fiction. It’s Sydney, the 1950s, and Billy’s trying to make a living, any way he can. Luckily, he’s a likeable guy, with a gift for masterminding elaborate scenarios—whether it’s a gambling scam, transporting a fortune in stolen jewels, or keeping the wheels greased during a hair-raising tour by Little Richard and his rock ‘n’ roll entourage. But trouble follows close behind—because Billy’s schemes always seem to interfere with the plans of Sydney’s big players, an unholy trinity of crooks, bent cops, and politicians on the make. Suddenly he’s in the frame for murder, and on the run from the police, who’ll happily send him down for it. Billy’s no sleuth, but there’s nowhere to turn for help. To prove it wasn’t him, he’ll have to find the real killer. Set in Sydney in the period following World War II, Doyle’s novels—featuring the irresistible Billy Glasheen—brilliantly explore the criminal underworld, high-level political corruption, and the postwar explosion of sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll.
