Book excerpt: In this book we give a complete geometric description of state spaces of operator algebras, Jordan as well as associative. That is, we give axiomatic characterizations of those convex sets that are state spaces of C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras, together with such characterizations for the normed Jordan algebras called JB-algebras and JBW-algebras. These non associative algebras generalize C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras re spectively, and the characterization of their state spaces is not only of interest in itself, but is also an important intermediate step towards the characterization of the state spaces of the associative algebras. This book gives a complete and updated presentation of the character ization theorems of [10]' [11] and [71]. Our previous book State spaces of operator algebras: basic theory, orientations and C*-products, referenced as [AS] in the sequel, gives an account of the necessary prerequisites on C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras, as well as a discussion of the key notion of orientations of state spaces. For the convenience of the reader, we have summarized these prerequisites in an appendix which contains all relevant definitions and results (listed as (AI), (A2), ... ), with reference back to [AS] for proofs, so that this book is self-contained.

Book excerpt: IFIP Working Group 5.2 has organized a series of workshops aimed at presenting and discussing current issues and future perspectives of Geometric Modeling in the CAD environment. From Geometric Modeling to Shape Modeling comprises the proceedings of the seventh GEO workshop, which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and held in Parma, Italy in October 2000. The workshop looked at new paradigms for CAD including the evolution of geometric-centric CAD systems, modeling of non-rigid materials, shape modeling, geometric modeling and virtual prototyping, and new methods of interaction with geometric models. The seventeen included papers provide an interesting overview of the evolution of geometric centric modeling into shape modeling. Also included is an invited speaker paper, which discusses the foundation of the next generation of CAD systems, where shape and function enhance geometric descriptions. The main topics discussed in the book are: Theoretical foundation for solids and surfaces; Computational basis for geometric modeling; Methods of interaction with geometric models; Industrial and other applications of geometric modeling; New paradigms of geometric modeling for CAD; Shape modeling. From Geometric Modeling to Shape Modeling is essential reading for researchers, graduate and postgraduate students, systems developers of advanced computer-aided design and manufacturing systems, and engineers involved in industrial applications.

Book excerpt: For a finite real reflection group W and a W -orbit O of flats in its reflection arrangement - or equivalently a conjugacy class of its parabolic subgroups - the authors introduce a statistic noninv O (w) on w in W that counts the number of O -noninversions of w . This generalises the classical (non-)inversion statistic for permutations w in the symmetric group S n. The authors then study the operator ? O of right-multiplication within the group algebra CW by the element that has noninv O (w) as its coefficient on w.

Book excerpt: These days, the nature of services and the volume of demand in the telecommu nication industry is changing radically, with the replacement of analog transmis sion and traditional copper cables by digital technology and fiber optic transmis sion equipment. Moreover, we see an increasing competition among providers of telecommunication services, and the development of a broad range of new services for users, combining voice, data, graphics and video. Telecommunication network planning has thus become an important problem area for developing and applying optimization models. Telephone companies have initiated extensive modeling and planning efforts to expand and upgrade their transmission facilities, which are, for most national telecommunication networks, divided in three main levels (see Balakrishnan et al. [5]), namely, l. the long-distance or backbone network that typically connects city pairs through gateway nodes; 2. the inter-office or switching center network within each city, that interconnects switching centers in different subdivisions (clusters of customers) and provides access to the gateway(s) node(s); 1 2 DESIGN OF SURVNABLE NETWORKS WITH BOUNDED RINGS 3. the local access network that connects individual subscribers belonging to a cluster to the corresponding switching center. These three levels differ in several ways including their design criteria. Ideally, the design of a telecommunication network should simultaneously account for these three levels. However, to simplify the planning task, the overall planning problem is decomposed by considering each level separately.

Book excerpt: Foundations of the Theory of Elasticity, Plasticity, and Viscoelasticity details fundamental and practical skills and approaches for carrying out research in the field of modern problems in the mechanics of deformed solids, which involves the theories of elasticity, plasticity, and viscoelasticity. The book includes all modern methods of research as well as the results of the authors’ recent work and is presented with sufficient mathematical strictness and proof. The first six chapters are devoted to the foundations of the theory of elasticity. Theory of stress-strain state, physical relations and problem statements, variation principles, contact and 2D problems, and the theory of plates are presented, and the theories are accompanied by examples of solving typical problems. The last six chapters will be useful to postgraduates and scientists engaged in nonlinear mechanics of deformed inhomogeneous bodies. The foundations of the modern theory of plasticity (general, small elastoplastic deformations and the theory of flow), linear, and nonlinear viscoelasticity are set forth. Corresponding research of three-layered circular plates of various materials is included to illustrate methods of problem solving. Analytical solutions and numerical results for elastic, elastoplastic, lineaer viscoelastic and viscoelastoplastic plates are also given. Thermoviscoelastoplastic characteristics of certain materials needed for numerical account are presented in the eleventh chapter. The informative book is intended for scientists, postgraduates and higher-level students of engineering spheres and will provide important practical skills and approaches.

This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book comprises the 3rd collection of benchmarks and examples for porous and fractured media mechanics. Analysis of thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) processes is essential to a wide area of applications in environmental engineering, such as geological waste deposition, geothermal energy utilization (shallow and deep systems), carbon capture and storage (CCS) as well as water resources management and hydrology. In order to assess the feasibility, safety as well as sustainability of geoenvironmental applications, model-based simulation is the only way to quantify future scenarios. This charges a huge responsibility concerning the reliability of conceptual models and computational tools. Benchmarking is an appropriate methodology to verify the quality and validate the concept of models based on best practices. Moreover, benchmarking and code comparison are building strong community links. The 3rd THMC benchmark book also introduces benchmark-based tutorials, therefore the subtitle is selected as “From Benchmarking to Tutoring”. The benchmark book is part of the OpenGeoSys initiative - an open source project to share knowledge and experience in environmental analysis and scientific computation. The new version of OGS-6 is introduced and first benchmarks are presented therein (see appendices).

Book excerpt: Semidefinite programming (SDP) is one of the most exciting and active research areas in optimization. It has and continues to attract researchers with very diverse backgrounds, including experts in convex programming, linear algebra, numerical optimization, combinatorial optimization, control theory, and statistics. This tremendous research activity has been prompted by the discovery of important applications in combinatorial optimization and control theory, the development of efficient interior-point algorithms for solving SDP problems, and the depth and elegance of the underlying optimization theory. The Handbook of Semidefinite Programming offers an advanced and broad overview of the current state of the field. It contains nineteen chapters written by the leading experts on the subject. The chapters are organized in three parts: Theory, Algorithms, and Applications and Extensions.
