Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient and Holy Wells of Cornwall A history of the ancient and holy wells of Corn wall had been a favourite idea with Mr. Quiller Couch for many years before his death, and most of his scanty leisure time was spent in visiting them and collecting information on the subject. During his last illness it was understood that a rough sketch of the preface was being written; whether this was the case or not, nothing but the few fol lowing notes on loose scraps of paper has ever been found. It has been thought best to give them as they are, without any attempt to work them into complete form. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I have also made some use of documents in the Hartford State Library and the mass of unexplored materials stored in the Cornwall Library. On recent history, I am greatly indebted to the personal recollections of many of my friends in the town whose assistance is now gratefully acknowledged. As I have said in the text, much material on Cornwall history must exist in the archives of our families and will disappear if not deposited for future use in some perma nent repository like the library of the town. It is to be hoped that the representatives of these families will take such action and that furthermore those who can recall events and cus toms will write them down and deposit the statement in the library; as a result our successors will be able to reconstruct the life of the present when it too will have pas_s_e'd away. I make particular acknowledgement to my wife who was always a keen and kindly critic and to Miss Emily Marsh, the skilled librarian of the town whose wide knowledge of the contents of the library was always at my command and who was unwearied in her assistance during and after hours. Preparation of this inadequate record of the history of our town has been a great privilege and pleasure; it revealed for the first time to the writer the extent to which the secrets of American life lie almost untouched by historians in the archives of local history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the County of Cornwall, Vol. 5: Romano-British Remains These facts forbid us to examine Roman Cornwall on the plan which we have adopted for other parts of Roman Britain. The archaeological evidence must still provide our basis. But it requires a'different'treatment. We cannot draw up lists of towns and villas and roads, and'describe each in turn, for there are none to describe. Our evidence is limited largely to coins and small Objects found sporadically, and these yield up their secrets only when tabulated with a minuteness of detail which would be needless if other large remains were plentiful. Nor is this all. In other counties our task ends with this survey of actually; known remains. In Cornwall we havefurther to compare our results with literary evidence. Only thus will the picture Of Roman Cornwall at last grow clear before us, and beside it'will emerge some not wholly untrue image of that ancient tin'trade which is so: famous and yet so little known. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cornwall And it is a fact that nowhere else in England are there so many villages bearing the names Of saints, and these names strange, and such as may be sought out in vain in the calendars that are easily accessible. One is impressed with the idea that the vast majority Of these saints are unknown and negligible quantities. This, however, is an entirely false assumption, and it is based on the fact that their history has not been studied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cornwall's Wonderland Joyment I myself found in the strange and wonderful Romances and Legends of Old Cornwall, now so rapidly being forgotten with a remembrance too of the numerous long and involved paragraphs - even pageswthat I skipped, as being prosy or unintelligible, written as they were in a dialect often untranslatable even by a Cornish child, I have here tried to present a few of these tales in simpler form, to suit not only Cornish children, but those of all parts.
