Book excerpt: There are many things that make Bruno special. He loves riding his bike and playing soccer, he is a great brother and is passionate about animals. He also has a prosthetic eye and in this book he tells you all about it. You will discover why Bruno got his special eye, how does he take care of it, how to protect eyes from accidents and what is a visit to the ocularist like. Having such a special eye is just one of the many things that make Bruno unique. This positive book will be a great resource for any child with vision in one eye, with or without a prosthetic eye, scleral shell or cosmetic lens. My Special Eye is also available in Spanish (Mi ojo especial: Un libro para niños sobre prótesis oculares) and Italian (Il mio occhio speciale: Un libro per bambini sulle protesi oculari). For more information, visit facebook.com/MySpecialEye/ From the Author: The story behind My Special Eye book My Special Eye was created a few years after my son lost vision in his left eye when he was 2 years old. One year later he had surgery to replace his eye with a prosthetic eye. It is an understatement to say that this affected our family deeply. Apart from the shock and pain for the suffering of our child and the anxiety for his future, we found ourselves dealing with something completely unexpected that we knew nothing about. Ocular prosthesis, scleral shell, hydroxyapatite implant, uveitis, phthisis bulbi, band keratopathy, evisceration, enucleation... suddenly all these terms became part of our day-to-day vocabulary. My Special Eye is the children's book we would have liked to have at that time. It will be a useful resource for any child with vision in one eye, a prosthetic eye or a scleral shell. Explaining a child that he or she needs an ocular prosthesis is not easy. However when the time came we found that our son and his sibling were way ahead of us in terms of acceptance, resilience and positivity. Also we soon realised that losing vision in one eye didn't limit our child in any way. For him his prosthesis meant that now he had a special eye that could be taken in and out. Nothing more and nothing less. I hope My Special Eye book will help monocular children and their families to realise that having a prosthetic eye is just one of the many things that make them so special and unique.

Jacob is in a hurry—a really big hurry—to get to the store to buy a special toy. There's only one left, and if he doesn't get to it soon, he'll never forgive his mom and dad for making him late. Strangers often stop Jacob's parents on the street to ask about him. See, Jacob is unusual: He has an eye patch. Jacob knows people like to ask questions, but do they have to ask right now? Luckily, Jacob gets to the store in time, and he meets a new friend who has something different, too. In the end, Jacob's journey makes him more aware of other people’s feelings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Typhoon’s Eye is a story of childhood and growing up amidst struggle, sacrifice, and concession to a stringent reality while keeping the dreams of youth alive. The imagery of Sandig hill with its vast greenery and lush ambiance shaped the perspective of the author as a young artist. Readers will share her personal journey in nostalgic local colors that are rendered by the sound of the church bells tolling, waking up the lazy town of Ocampo, the solemn procession on Easter, the crowded Sunday market, and the seductive scents of native delicacies sold on the streets. Alcohol and post-traumatic stress disorder clouded the expression of parental love, resulting in the severe upbringing of the author and her siblings. Chavez-Bernstein has crafted her coming-of-age tale in a profoundly insightful prose. This story is rich in pathos that can grip your heart with truthful tales of human interest. Love at first sight was as real as the disrupted lives in her parents’ generation during the Second World War, which blossomed again among those born in the following generation. In The Typhoon’s Eye is a memoir portraying the author’s young life and her courageous treatment of life’s adversities. Her perseverance, passion, relentless faith, and unbreakable love of family highlight this poignant story.

Book excerpt: What parents, educators, and health professionals can do to recognize, prevent, and heal childhood trauma, from infancy through adolescence—by the author of Waking the Tiger Trauma can result not only from catastrophic events such as abuse, violence, or loss of loved ones, but from natural disasters and everyday incidents like auto accidents, medical procedures, divorce, or even falling off a bicycle. At the core of this book is the understanding of how trauma is imprinted on the body, brain, and spirit—often resulting in anxiety, nightmares, depression, physical illnesses, addictions, hyperactivity, and aggression. Rich with case studies and hands-on activities, Trauma Through a Child’s Eyes gives insight into children’s innate ability to rebound with the appropriate support, and provides their caregivers with tools to overcome and prevent trauma. “Trauma Through A Child’s Eyes . . . creates its own mold in a way that everyone concerned with the health and happiness of children will be grateful for.” —Gabor Maté, MD, author of Hold On to Your Kids

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “As sweet and funny and sad and true and heartfelt a memoir as one could find.” —from the foreword by Augusten Burroughs Ever since he was young, John Robison longed to connect with other people, but by the time he was a teenager, his odd habits—an inclination to blurt out non sequiturs, avoid eye contact, dismantle radios, and dig five-foot holes (and stick his younger brother, Augusten Burroughs, in them)—had earned him the label “social deviant.” It was not until he was forty that he was diagnosed with a form of autism called Asperger’s syndrome. That understanding transformed the way he saw himself—and the world. A born storyteller, Robison has written a moving, darkly funny memoir about a life that has taken him from developing exploding guitars for KISS to building a family of his own. It’s a strange, sly, indelible account—sometimes alien yet always deeply human.

Book excerpt: Although rarely explored in academic literature, most inhabitants and visitors interact with an urban landscape on a day-to-day basis is on the street level. Storefronts, first floor apartments, and sidewalks are the most immediate and common experience of a city. These "plinths" are the ground floors that negotiate between inside and outside, the public and private spheres. The City at Eye Level qualitatively evaluates plinths by exploring specific examples from all over the world. Over twenty-five experts investigate the design, land use, and road and foot traffic in rigorously researched essays, case studies, and interviews. These pieces are supplemented by over two hundred beautiful color images and engage not only with issues in design, but also the concerns of urban communities. The editors have put together a comprehensive guide for anyone concerned with improving or building plinths, including planners, building owners, property and shop managers, designers, and architects.

Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D. Delve deep into the mysteries of consciousness and the spiritual realm in this classic by Dr. David Hawkins, a leading figure in the field of self-realization and personal development. His wisdom deeply resonates with my lived experiences; he is often able to beautifully articulate what I cannot put into words.” – Vex King The Eye of the I (which calibrates at 950) is more advanced than Power vs. Force (which calibrates at 850) and brilliantly reveals the very core of the spiritual process critical to the state of Enlightenment.
