This book was released on 1993-01-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the architectural development of the sanctuary from its foundation in the late seventh century B.C. to the end of the pre-Imperial Roman phase (31 B.C.). The main periods of sanctuary architecture treated in the volume took shape in the shadow of major historical events of Cyrene, from its colonial foundation and through its rapid expansion under the Battiad monarchs, and its eventual struggle with Persian-occupied Egypt. This is followed by Cyrene's tumultuous and as yet poorly understood fifth century, and its loss of independence under the Ptolemies. University Museum Monograph, 76
Book Synopsis The Extramural Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone at Cyrene, Libya, Final Reports, Volume VI by : T. V. Buttrey
Download or read book The Extramural Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone at Cyrene, Libya, Final Reports, Volume VI written by T. V. Buttrey and published by UPenn Museum of Archaeology. This book was released on 1998-01-29 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coins, for reasons that do not always make sense, are often treated by field excavators as more reliable chronological indexes than other classes of artifacts. This always makes their discovery a welcome event, especially when they are silver or gold, which tend to survive in the ground in a more recognizable state than their bronze counterparts. The Red Figure pottery does not have quite the same chronological relevance as the coins but does on occasion contribute to the dating of archaeological contexts. Its often high quality and interesting variety of shapes has already generated commentary elsewhere in addition to what is presented here. University Museum Monograph, 97

This book was released on 2012-07-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the climactic volume on the archaeological and architectural history from ca. 31 B.C. to A.D. 365 of the extramural sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone at Cyrene, Libya. It deals with the impact of Christianity on the cult and the causes of its decline, with particular emphasis on the largest body of evidence recorded anywhere for iconoclastic damage, presumably by Christian populations, to sculpted images of worshippers and twin goddesses. The volume traces the characteristics of major Demeter sanctuaries elsewhere (e.g., Eleusis, Corinth, Pergamon, Acragas, and Selinus) and places Cyrene's sanctuary within the context of this development. The volume also presents the sanctuary's important lapidary and lead inscriptions as analyzed by Joyce Reyonlds. It is the eighth volume in the final reports series for the excavations conducted for the University of Michigan, and subsequently the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, between 1969 and 1981. Book Synopsis A Historical Approach to Casuistry by : Carlo Ginzburg
Download or read book A Historical Approach to Casuistry written by Carlo Ginzburg and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-27 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Casuistry, the practice of resolving moral problems by applying a logical framework, has had a much larger historical presence before and since it was given a name in the Renaissance. The contributors to this volume examine a series of case studies to explain how different cultures and religions, past and present, have wrestled with morality's exceptions and margins and the norms with which they break. For example, to what extent have the Islamic and Judaic traditions allowed smoking tobacco or gambling? How did the Spanish colonization of America generate formal justifications for what it claimed? Where were the lines of transgression around food, money-lending, and sex in Ancient Greece and Rome? How have different systems dealt with suicide? Casuistry lives at the heart of such questions, in the tension between norms and exceptions, between what seems forbidden but is not. A Historical Approach to Casuistry does not only examine this tension, but re-frames casuistry as a global phenomenon that has informed ethical and religious traditions for millennia, and that continues to influence our lives today.

Book excerpt: The essays in this collection consider specific examples and case studies of 'lost' classical cities from across the many Roman provinces in order to help understand why some 'failed' and were subsequently abandoned. Bringing together both established and rising international scholars to share views on and findings from excavations and surveys of 'failed' towns, this volume has much to offer scholars of Roman, late antique and early medieval archaeology, urban scholars and ancient historians.

Download or read book Marsa Matruh I written by Donald White and published by INSTAP Academic Press. This book was released on 2002-12-31 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The excavations of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology at Marsa Matruh on Bates's Island, which is located on the seacoast at the north of Egypt's western desert, uncovered a small site with a metalworking workshop and nearby houses. The pottery found in the excavations indicates that this small Late Bronze Age settlement had links to several cultures: Cyprus, the Aegean, Egypt, the coast of western Asia, and the local Marmarican people. The results of the excavations are published in two volumes. This volume provides an overview of the excavations at the site, the Late Bronze Age and historical period occupations, and an introduction to the environmental morphology and history of the island.
